The Gray Man (Gosling, Evans, Russos)

I just can't get out over how bad and non-cinematic this movie looks, like most other Netflix action movies. The CGI smoke, haze, sparks, fireworks, explosions. Where does all of the money go on these budgets, other than to actor's salaries? The difference between a film this like and the John Wick films with much lower budgets is jarring.

Gosling was good, despite phoning it in. Evans was fun, but overall just a generic, uneven action film that I can already barely remember.

I was thinking the same thing @The Shape , this movie just looked so green-screeny and blatantly CGI-y, but so many netflix movies have this look. They dont look like studio made theatrically released films. They all have this big budget TV movie feel to them, from the cinematography to the editing to the score, this doesnt feel like a "cinematic" film that Warner Bros or Universal or Fox or Paramount would release. What resources do those studios have-use that these directors for Netflix arent utilizing?

Going to watch this soon.
Been awhile that ive seen a mindless action film.

I think most of the budget went to the cast and into shooting on locations in various European countries. They went practical for a few scenes too. But yeah, in the end, the CGI, editing, cinematography and general look of the film was really cheap for this kind of production. It's pretty much always like that with Netflix action films. Like they're always manufactured in the same factory.

Oh yeah, that Rob Kazinsky guy is in this movie for like 5 minutes. I remember back when people acted like he was going to be the next big thing. Did he even have any lines?

I just realized that the niece is the young actress in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood haha

But didn't you hear? Movies don't need to look cinematic, because cinemas are elitist and "auteur filmmaking" is an outdated, old school notion. Corporate sludge is the future of film, and if you don't agree you're wrong :o

This was such an ugly movie yet somehow that's not even the worst aspect. This script is a mess. The daughter storyline is a completely half-baked and perfunctory. The attempt to create some kind of emotional connection and arc during the climax comes way too late. And good god, the dialogue feels so impressed with itself. I get it, the serious people are talking about Bubbalicious and Skittles, can we get on with it?

I guess I’m in the minority. I liked it. Didn’t love it but the cast really carried this thing. Very thin plot wise and a tad too predictable. Bonding with a kid… I mean really?

Like why did Sierra Six so easily turn based on what Sierra Four said? And evil CIA guy was way too over the top caricature.

But the action was serviceable if a bit too CGI heavy. I could think of worst ways to spend 2 hours.

I think it’s funny though that between this and Lightyear, Evans probably didn’t get the hits he thought he would this summer.

Yeah, the whole bonding with the kid thing came so sudden and felt really weird and out of place imo.
I was expecting anything from this movie, but this wasnt it and it didnt fit at all.

And yeah, it felt so empty how he just suddenly turns and questions everything.
There was no real build up to give this weight, to make this turn feel important.

Take out the kid plot to instead do more to give more weight to Sierra Six choice, would have done the movie a service.
Could have maybe tipped the scale because otherwise i think people are a bit too harsh on its CGI etc.

But its either way not a movie that starts off a new franchise.
Decent action movie, but thats about it.

I’m glad they had the kid storyline in there. It gave some extra emotional weight. Maybe I would have changed how easy it was for him to question things and would have build up to it instead.

I liked the kid storyline being introduced simply because it kept it from being a total Bourne clone. But they didn’t do enough with it. We got like one or two scenes of him bonding with her and they felt like that was enough.

I'll go on record and admit I thought it was okay. Granted, I went in with zero expectations, based on the comments I read here and elsewhere online. I guess you could say I expected nothing from it and it delivered accordingly, so I wasn't disappointed, if that makes sense :yay:

I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that I was fitfully entertained. Having said that, how the hell did this thing cost $200 million? What, do Gosling and Evans command $50 million paychecks apiece now??

LOL, did the whole story about Henwick, Evans and Page all going to Harvard together make anyone think of the part in MacGruber where you found out that Forte, Kilmer and Maya Rudolph were all friends in college?

I would laugh so hard if they looked to MacGruber for inspiration when making this thing.

Watching the movie, I still don't understand the appeal of Rege Jean Page. I don't get it.
Same. I was disappointed his character didn’t really get the ending we expected.

Yeah it was okay. Gosling, Evans and Ana did well enough and clearly Chris was having the time of his life trying to give this any sort of life. It was fine for the mindless couple of hours of action, but I'm with everyone else wondering why every Netflix movie feels like a Netflix movie.

Jean Page and Henwick's characters brought it down too. That whole little subplot or whatever was a snooze.

Finally saw it, not horrible by any means but not great. I've seen way worse (IE Red Notice).

I liked this better when it was called Commando.

I still wonder what might have been had Evans' part been portrayed by Gyllenhaal. Both he and Gosling need to do a film together.

Nah Evans was the only actually good part of the film
Swap Gyllenhaal in for Gosling instead, then we're talkin'

Gosling's very hit or miss for me, half the time he's fantastic (The Nice Guys) and half the time he's a 6ft tall block of wood (this, Blade Runner)

JOE RUSSO: Everybody loves the movie. The audience score is fantastic, the response has been overwhelming, number one in 93 countries. Evans and Gosling are very happy with the film, Ryan has told me his mother said it’s her favorite movie he’s ever made. We’ll take that as certification that we need a sequel, that feedback from Ryan’s mother. Everyone’s happy, loved working together. We just got back from traveling the globe and the response was tremendous. We’re excited to expand the story.
