The Greatest Criminal Mind of Our Time: Nicholas Hoult IS Lex Luthor

A little humor is fine, but it's the obvious on the nose mustache twirling by the villain that's avoided I'm hoping.

I think Gunn will do fine with Lex. I’ve liked all of his villains so far in comic book stuff. The High Evolutionary and Ego were the standouts but I thought he also did a great job with Ronan (underrated villain IMO), the Tinker and the Butterflies. I just hope he doesn’t lean too hard into the Donner influence.

Honestly the High Evolutionary was all I needed to see to be confident that Lex won't be a problem for Gunn.

And reminder: Gunn is on record as having hated Donner's Lex. So we're not in danger of that one at all.

Oh, nice. Didn’t realize that! Or maybe I forgot.

To be clear, I don’t hate Hackman’s Lex but I definitely want to see something more in line with the modern incarnation of the character.

It was after he dissed an unnamed Lex portrayal on Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, and everyone (particularly in a certain group) assumed he meant EisenLex and had a fit over it. So he responded:

On another note, for anyone still out there who takes Gunn at face value when he says "I've never said [insert character/plot point] was in the movie" as if it's some kind of denial, my search for that Tweet turned up another Gunn quote from that podcast that I'd forgotten:

When first asked a Lex Luthor is in Superman: Legacy, Gunn acknowledged audiences are expecting that, but it's something that he's "never said:"

“Yeah… Everybody thinks there’s a Lex Luthor out there. But I’ve never said there was a Lex Luthor in there.”

tl;dr - why I'm still 100% confident that Kara is in this movie lol.

I also like Hackman's 'goofy huckster with a fixation on land grabbing' version. In some ways it could be seen as a stepping stone to the corporate overlord everyone's now more familiar with. But yeah, definitely looking for something a little more serious and post-crisis. For all the criticism it gets, however, I did like how in BVS they combined the corrupt businessman model with the mad scientist angle.

Hoult has been fancast for numerous roles over the years (makes him sound like an old man!!) so when he got the Lex gig, I was indifferent to it. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. But the more I watch of him, the more I think he'll nail it. He has a slightly unnerving look and I bet he'll be sinister as hell, given the chance.

It's sad to say, but a cw show has gave us the best life action version of Lex so far.

That's the Lex I want. Uber serious, ultra intelligent, very suave in public.
He Hates Superman with a passion to the point of jealousy.

Given Hoult's youth and boyishness, I wonder if this Luthor will be portrayed in a similar but less pronounced 'wonderkid' fashion that the Eisenberg version was.

Oh he can totally pull off unnerving.

Anyone seen this?

I wonder how much Legacy-adjacent material he’ll even be able to get into. Obviously spoiler stuff is out of the question, but will he even be able to get into his point of view on Lex, having another Lex in the room with him?

There's no way they don't chat about the character, even if he can't say anything specific on the film. Rosenbaum got Gunn to spill quite a bit on his ideas considering their interview was before they'd even cast anybody yet.

Kind of feels like strategic timing to have him on the pod. There's no way Gunn & Rosenbaum haven't discussed this.

Came across very well. Well versed in all things Lex.
I think he's going to knock it out of the park.

If I didn't already highly rate him as an actor, I don't know if I'd be sold. It's not the kind of look/age range for Lex I'd have chosen personally.

But because I do rate him highly, I just feel really open to seeing what he does with it.

I llikewhat he said about his prep process and how each thing informs his approach, even the stuff that doesn't tangibly translate.
