The Greatest Criminal Mind of Our Time: Nicholas Hoult IS Lex Luthor

Menu reunion:

Lex - Hoult
Brainiac - Fiennes
Parasite - Leguizamo (his Clown in Spawn is one of my favorite villain performances ever)

Whats Ed Skrein got to do with this? :yummy:

While I would have preferred an older actor, ie, Bradley Cooper or Matthew mcconaughey, I will definitely give him a chance IF he's the guy.

He may actually make me love to hate lex instead of just outright hating Lex like JE caused me to do. That was a cringe hate.

Throw in Anya Taylor-Joy and you got a deal.

She’s probably too big for Mercy Graves and too old for Supergirl. I could be wrong about both though.

I like both Swinton and Fiennes for Brainiac. A female Brainiac is a good call, perhaps the idea stems from the Borg Queen from TNG (who shares a number of characteristics with Brainiac). Star Trek and TNG masterfully handle a number of massive existential threats but they often feel grounded and frightening.

Would it be too on the nose to cast Alice Krige?

The Brainiac/Lex dynamic seen during the tail end of JLU could be fun to explore onscreen with a female presenting Brainiac and Lex.

I see a LOT of ST influence on JL TAS and JLU. It’s a smart series to emulate because they are able to smartly write ways to creatively defeat seemingly unbeatable threats.

Hoult’s great casting; so happy to see his name in the mix.

With Hoult, I could buy him being innocent and likeable on camera (I still see that young About a Boy character in him), yet in reality is vain and inhumane. There’s something not quite right going on behind his eyes, and he’s handsome in an almost menacing way.

And his performances of late tend to have this over-the-top quality that’s perfect for Lex, who I think needs to have a comedic quality to him.

Tilda could pass for male or female.
For me, She has this other worldly feel about her.

To me the thing that I don't like about Hoult is that he's not imposing at all.
When I think of Lex I think of an imposing figure. Someone that can command an entire room with their voice alone. Calm and collected, and I don't really see Hoult as that and I don't think he'd attempt to play it that way either.

He kinda signals to me a very daddy-issues oriented Lex which I guess can work fine but coming after Eisenberg feels slightly redundant even if Hoult is probably gonna be a little more traditional.

I was thinking about something today and I wanted to present the topic here just to get a sense of what others have to say.

Is it actually important to you that Lex is bald and if so, why?

I just wanted him to be bald because that is his image. However, other than that, it didn't really matter. The origin of his baldness is often ret-conned and is sometimes linked to Superman in some way, sometimes it is by choice, sometimes it is just not mentioned and seemingly hereditary. He isn't even bald at all in Superman: Earth One. It would suck if we missed out on an awesome casting choice because the actor didn't want to shave their head.

So is his baldness and the origin of his baldness an important factor to anyone?

Considering almost every live action Lex Luthor we've had had some BS excuse to wear a wig through most of their performances, I'd say it's important that we keep him bald.

Yeah, having thought about it a little more. I think I settled on, "It is important to me because that is how he has always been, and that is how I see him."

In the same way that my image of Superman is pretty rigid. I guess my image of Lex is kind of rigid too. I wouldn't want to see Superman changed to a short, skinny, blondy for any reason at all.

If Collin Farrel can turn into The Penguin then I'm sure someone that doesn't want to shave their head can probably get some prosthetics to create the look.

After watching JW4 I was kinda thinking it would be fun to see Lex like that big dude that John had to fight, granted his makeup wasn't on the level of The Batmans but it would still be fun to create a larger than life Lex,

Yeah, this is probably the best solution right here if it really came down to an actor not wanting to shave. It isn't like Karen Gillan shaved her head for Nebula in Guardians.

Or how about we get the people that cgi removed henry cavill's mustache? think they can do a whole head? haha

Really liking this casting, if its true. It's possible they're going for something along the lines of Clancy Brown's version from the animated series, where he attempted to play up a cultured and sophisticated image, but couldn't mask his skin-crawling sliminess. Hoult's role as Tony Stonem in Skins was exactly that type of character, which is what has me speculating.

Yeah, important to me. It’s quite a distinctive trademark of his, and makes any interpretation feel more like Lex just by its presence.

Yes. I need Lex to be bald. It’s his most distinctive physical trait and even in the GOOD Superman movies, we’ve mostly been denied that for some reason. If Gunn wants to include an origin where he loses his hair through some freak experiment or exposure to Kryptonite, okay. But have that be early on so we’re not waiting until the last scene for him to look like his comic book counterpart again.

Yes bald. I'm tired of seeing Lex with a full head of hair on the big screen.

It is really odd that so many of the movies have gone this route. It’s not like bald people are some rarity.

Hackman in particular really bugs me. He refused to shave his head, I guess because he knew he was losing his hair and was probably over sensitive about it. It’s a shame though, because he honestly looks good bald. And the hair he did have never looked good, lol.
