The Greatest Criminal Mind of Our Time: Nicholas Hoult IS Lex Luthor

He’s going to be spectacular. When I think back to when I first saw him, Skins season 1, I feel like he nailed Lex even then. That smarmy sociopathic guy who hurts people because it suits his goals at the time.

gee has there been a better time than now for a Lex adaption? I feel like he would thrive on social media posting dumb stuff just to get hate reacts and attention

People keep using manips of Hoult when he was much younger and still has a boyishness about him.

Check him at the Renfield premiere. Dude's face is practically carved and he looks much more his age.

Man the pictures people picked when he was possibly going to be Superman... Same deal again.

Hoult is a fantastic actor and a great choice for Lex. I'm honestly glad he got it regardless too because I feel like he's been trying to land the superhero lead gig for a while. The next best thing? Becoming the villain and he's gonna make a great Luthor.

I'm pleased with this choice. Literally the only name being thrown around that had me intrigued.

Yeah, I always liked Hoult. I was actually rooting for him when casting for The Batman came down to him and Pattinson. Ultimately Reeves made the right choice there but I believe Hoult would have also been good. And I think he’ll make a great Luthor. I’ve seen him in play a number of diverse characters at this point and while none of them are too similar to Lex (aside from a few traits here and there), I have no doubt he’ll pull this off if the script is good.

It’s a bit odd though that Gunn hasn’t responded to the news yet. Maybe it’s because the deal hasn’t been finalized but I’m surprised he hasn’t posted about it. That’s the only thing that makes me wonder if he hasn’t fully settled on Hoult yet.

One thing I do like about this over Alexander Skarsgard (the one I was rooting for from the names we got) is that Nick and David will feel more like contemporaries, which is my preferred dynamic for Clark and Lex. I just hope he can bring the menace/intimidation when necessary. That’s the one thing I need from Lex that I haven’t seen from Hoult. But he’s a good actor, so he’ll get the benefit of the doubt from me there. I do think getting the guy who lost out on both Batman and Superman to play Lex is a great idea on paper.

Here's to hoping that we'll finally get more than two scenes between Superman and Lex on film.

Seriously, it's weird that their characters have not much interactions with each other on film since "Superman IV".

I wonder if Nick is too young to do the Presidenr Luthor storyline? I still think that would be heaps of fun

I would like to see them do President Luthor down the road (especially because Lex actually divested himself of his businesses when he became president, proving that he’s less corrupt than a certain other “businessman” who got into politics) but not in this movie. I feel like Lex becoming president is something you save for a later movie. And given Hoult’s age, I think that would work best. Save President Lex for when he’s in his late 30s/early 40s.

I feel that Lex will be the DCU's nick fury, ie, a cameo or small role in each of the DCU films, or at the least, mentioned because of Lex-corp.

I also feel Lex will be the cause of possible villains we will ( may? ) eventually see in the DCU, ie, Brainiac, Lobo, maybe Mongul, and perhaps an even bigger threat like Darkseid or the anti-monitor.

You have to be 35 years old to be allowed to be President, and Hoult is 33 so he's two years away from being being able to run if he was an American citizen.

His work in Mad Max Fury Road actually kinda gets me pumped about this too, he can be the suave business savvy titan character but also show a touch of madness and depravity.

Next question, what sort of look do you think they’ll go with? Nothing but suits? Probably eventually even the purple and green one?

I hope that they have more fun with his wardrobe, Lex is far too much of a narcissist to wear nothing but boring business suits, he’s the best dressed person in the room and he knows it.

Mostly business suits, but I'm certain they'll switch it up every now and again. I dislike the power suit but I'll be surprised if he doesn't wear it at least once

I think Hoult’s casting is Gunn & Safran looking ahead too. If they get Luthor right, he’s a character that could easily follow a similar trajectory as Loki in Gunn & Safran’s DCU—villain turned anti-hero (and, in Luthor’s case, hopefully back into a super villain).

Hoult’s more of a name than Hiddleston was, absolutely. But I don’t think he’s necessarily a household name.
This is the time to finally get Luthor right on film and have him around as an important DC character long term. He should be held in a similar regard as Joker IMO, but obviously the Luthors we've got to date can't come close to living up to the best Jokers.

Exactly. I go back and forth between Joker and Lex as my favorite supervillains (similarly, I’m the same way with Bats and Supes) but we’ve gotten SO many good Jokers at this point and and… two(?) good Luthors maybe? I liked Hackman in Superman ‘78 because he at least felt like a ruthless sociopath. After that he just became comic relief. Other than that, I liked Rosenbaum even if the show around him was mediocre at best. Spacey felt like he was phoning it in. Eisenberg was an abomination. And I know people love Superman & Lois but I can’t by the “Mother D***” guy from Walking Dead as the smartest man alive.

It shouldn’t be hard for Hoult to leave them all in the dust if the script is good.

I love having Joker and Lex as totally opposite types of villain in DC comics. It’s time for Lex to take his place alongside Joker at the top. I like Rosenbaum as a young Lex but on film, audiences haven’t got close to seeing how great LL can be. Hopefully Hoult can take the step up and give us his best performance to date. I’m sure he’ll be highly motivated at least.

100% agree with you on this. I kind of get echos of Samuel l Jackson’s character in the first kingsman movie for Lex. He wants to show off and he hates the attention not being on him all the time

At lex-corp - 10k suits, Rolex watch ( one for each day of the week ) Gucci shoes.

To be honest, I am sick of "quirky" and goofy Lex. I am a bit worried we are getting another one with Hoult, with an influencer version of Miss. Teschmacher. I really want a serious and charismatic Lex who is one step ahead of everyone and isn't cringe.
