I think for this film to be successful, it really needs to stand out among the superhero crowd. The best way to do that, IMO, is setting as much of the film in space as possible. Explore the GL Corps through Hal's eyes as he trains and have the final battle off-planet somehow. Don't get too hokey with CGI aliens, but don't be afraid to embrace the more colorful (literally and figuratively) GLs.
And finally, explore the legacy concept. Imagine how cool it would be to see that green flame falling from the sky and Alan Scott finding the lantern, even if only in a brief scene. Then we see Abin Sur crash on Earth and hand the ring off to Hal. We've never seen that sort of thing in a superhero film. It'd shake-up the stale origin film archtype and just be downright cool.
There's my 2 cents.
