The Amazing Spider-Man 2 The Hans Zimmer Score thread

I might be completely wrong, but didn't Zimmer come on to score a Pirates OTC sequel, and use some of Badelt's same cues from COTBP?
That's a long story, but A Necessary Evil got the gist of it. Those weren't really Badelt's cues.

I'm crossing my fingers for this to happen, but unless I'm mistaken, I don't think there's any precedent of Zimmer doing anything like that in the past (I don't count The Lone Ranger since that's literally a classical piece of music), so I'm very skeptical. I'll admit I was encouraged by the music in the leaked trailer, but honestly, as others have pointed out, Zimmer almost certainly hadn't started doing the score yet at that point so it probably meant nothing. :csad:

EDIT: oh... damn

So Sony has a big press release celebrating the assembly of a "supergroup" consisting of Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr, Michael Einziger and Dave Stewart only for them to use Horner's theme as a template? That would pretty much make them a glorified cover band. No chance. The visual look of the film will be different because of the format and cinematographer change, so there is really no issue in creating a whole new score to go with it.

Translation: The goal is to make the scope of this film bigger in every way...
Exactly. That is just too much of an investment if they planned to stick to the original theme. They clearly want something different.

Besides, I don't think its a big deal at all. Every singly X-men movie had a different theme and composer on boards. So it has happened before. I would be willing to even give James Horner a second chance but TASM theme just HAS to go. When I listen to A Beautiful Mind, Titanic, Jumanji, Aliens,Avatar, etc and then hear a sample of his spider-man theme I can't help but feel huge disappointment. Clearly the man is WAY more talented then that crap score he put out, something went wrong there and I wonder how much time he was given (or if he was pressured into creating a generic score...who knows). But at the end of the day if they brought Horner back the theme will stay the same so unfortunately he has to go (although I am interested in what he would create if he was given a second chance)

Idk where the thread about what music people think would be good in the film is so I figured I'd just post it in here.

But I think Seven Nation Army by White Stripes would be good in a SM movie. It's so universally known and used already I think it would fit

If we go by "universally known" as criteria I'm pretty sure you/we can think of a couple more adequate songs for the character/movie. It's a great song but I feel it became overused when all the remixes and sports media channels started to use it everywhere they could jam it in...

I'd rather pick adequate songs, period. Known or obscure. Also I'm pretty sure Spider-man doesn't need known songs to raise awareness for the franchise or push the marketing forward (which is the main reason we see those big songs attached to media nowadays). If anything, Spiderman is the known brand that could push some lesser known songs forward if they go with it.

I normally dislike songs in a movie, it dates it. Only a few have pulled it off (The IM movies, Avengers, Spider-Man 2) for example.

Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my Head in the SM2 montage was inspired.

I usually would shy away from well-known songs for something like this, but it came up on my phone and for whatever reason pictured Spidey web-slinging and crime fighting to it in the opening or something. I'm way more for obscure music usually, but in this case the well-known, anthem-atic nature of it I thought might work.

In reality if it actually did get used I'd probably be opposed to it ha just stirrin the pot

Agreed I don't like it in general either. I thought TASM used them fairly well though

If they use the top song hits of the year, sure. Except there's plenty of movies that go with oldies and it's not really making it dated. It depends, really.

If a song fits a general theme or mood, I reckon they should be used. For instance, a David Bowie song was used to great effect in the pretty recent Perks of Being a Wallflower.

If the trailer music is being re-done, the whole "will Zimmer use Horner's music?" question still remains.

Me personally, I would prefer to hear Horner's theme in there somewhere. Even if we hear it just briefly and then it's modulated into something different would be pretty cool. Then again, with the additional musicians Zimmer is working with on this, i.e Pharrell, Johnny Marr, Stewart, etc. they could completely stray away from it and never use it.

I was thinking about this the other day. I really think they'll go with something completely new. Excited to hear, man. Do you think the main theme will be introduced in the trailer?

I think so but then again not because HZ was in the studio getting the music ready so maybe or it might just be its own we'll see

'Cause to me it sounded like he was under a lot of pressure due to the due date, and he needed to write something for the trailer. I took that as..not necessarily including the main theme. Like for the actual movie.

I love Horner's score. How many superhero movies have such piano-centric, soft, emotional scores? Even though I don't agree, I can understand why some people feel the main theme sounds generic. Still, I don't feel the way it's used throughout the movie is generic at all. The score isn't numbingly heroic like John Williams' Superman score (which I happen to love as well). Instead of taking an in-your-face approach to the theme, it's flowing and beautiful even at its most intense moments.

I get a summer romance/nostalgic feel from the score. To me the themes feel like they're being told in hindsight. For example, a lot of people say the score is unfitting when he's fighting the Lizard in school. That's what I thought when I first watched the movie, but now my feelings are that the score is saying, "This is Spider-Man in his early stages, this is the hero coming into his own". In that scene the score isn't as much about "is he going to win or lose?!" but is more about his blossoming as a hero.

Same goes for the romance themes. It's looking back on a first love, rather than being in the present. It's the Spider-Man:Blue of Spidey movie scores.

The score is like a loving look back on Spidey's birth as a hero. Well, that's just how the music makes me feel anyway. I know this is all subjective. Just offering another positive outlook on Horner's score!

I wanna say that I understand a lot of what you're saying and relate to a lot of your points. Maybe that was their goal. Who knows. But TASM2 is obviously something new compared to TASM, and we'll just have to see what they planned out and how it's gonna look once it's over.

I love Horner's scores.

I have been playing them repeatedly on my way to school/work and I love the heroic climax of certain soundtracks. Very "iconic" kinda feel. (Saving New York, anyone?)

And those soft emotional parts like in "Promises" and "I Can't See You Anymore".

Also, in the "Promises", I like it when it transitions from the soft parts to the "main" Spidey theme. The final swing of TASM automatically plays in my head :) (Heck, even the "DIRECTED BY MARC WEBBS").
