The High-Def Thread, Now With 95% Less HD DVD

Nice!

(although hearing BTTF and "25th Anniversary" in the same sentence is making me feel old)

Are there any plans for ET yet?

Well the only 2 Spielberg directed movies to hit Blu-ray are Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Close Encounters was a 30th Anniversary release which Spielberg was heavily involved in with Sony. So I think in a nutshell when it comes to classics such as E.T. or Jaws the studios would like Spielberg to be involved in their releases and anniversaries seem like the most opportune time to do so. So if I were to take another complete guess going by the anniversary theory then we could likely see E.T. in 2012 which is its 30th Anniversary.

And I would also say next year we will more than likely see an Indiana Jones boxset but that isn't confirmed yet.

Okay, we've finally got some official details on Disney's forthcoming DVD and Blu-ray release of Up, thanks to the Disney Store website! (And special thanks to Bits reader Michael M. for spotting this.) According to the store listing, look for a single-disc DVD (SRP $29.99) and a 4-disc Blu-ray (SRP $45.99). The Blu-ray will include a 2 Blu-rays, the DVD version and a Digital Copy disc. Additional versions MAY also be available. The Blu-ray Disc will include a Cine-Explore viewing option with director Pete Docter and co-director Bob Peterson, the all-new Dug's Special Mission animated short, the Partly Cloudy animated short seen in theatres before the film, 9 behind-the-scenes featurettes and documentaries (including Adventure is Out There, The Many Endings of Muntz, Canine Companions, Geriatric Hero, Russell: Wilderness Explorer, Our Giant Flightless Friend, Kevin, Homemakers of Pixar, Balloons and Flight and Composing for Characters), the Married Life alternate scene, a montage of trailers for the film and the Global Guardian Badge BD-Live Game.

WB Vaults 3 DVDs in Anticipation of BD
Warner Home Video has announced that from September 4, it will stop DVD sales of three of its top-selling catalog titles: 'Caddyshack' , 'The Exorcist' and 'Doctor Zhivago' . All three titles are expected to be released on Blu-ray in 2010, from remastered prints and with new bonus content, although no specific date has been revealed.

“As the saying goes, ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder,'” said Jeff Baker, Warner's EVP and GM of theatrical catalog. “We know film fans will be eagerly awaiting the return in 2010 of these iconic films. And we're going to make it worth the wait, with beautiful remastered prints, recovered previously lost footage, and exciting new bonus content all with the latest Blu-ray technology.”

Woodstock Blu-ray Sells over 150,000 Copies
Since it was released on June 9, the BD edition of 'Woodstock: 30 Days of Peace and Music Director's Cut Ultimate Collector's Edition' has shipped 300,000 units to retail since its June 9 release and sold through 50% of those units to consumers, according to Warner Home Video. The studio is pleased, with 10 days still to go until the actual 40th anniversary of the historic music festival, and given the title's premium price tag.

Among the reasons given for the performance of the title, the studio mentions its wealth of content, including "18 never-before-released concert performances", and the "glowing reviews" it received in several publications.

“We knew that Woodstock held a special place in the psyche of our country, and we're delighted to see that translate into sales,” said Jeff Baker, Warner executive VP/general manager of theatrical catalog. “With the plentiful amount of Woodstock-related events going on and the superb media coverage, we're sure that awareness will continue to grow and carry us through the holiday season when we can expect another big spike in sales.”

Interesting strategy by WB, may make some DVD owners upset, but oh well. It will be interesting to see how that works out

So time to add my two cents into the discussion regarding 3D and home video. Yesterday afternoon I checked out My Bloody Valentine 3D (borrowed from my dad, it's not something I would buy). The effect was pretty cool in places, but with the green and violet glasses, you really do loose a lot of picture quality and it mutes most of the color palette. Characters in the foreground usually look ok, but anything else is pretty much lost. I think 3D at home can be the future but not until you can watch it like that real 3D they have in theaters now with the clear glasses. Until then it's just a fun "extra" for some viewers

Target has a Buy One Get One Free sale going on right now on select Blu-Rays.

Well who knows really I just am 99.9% sure that this year there will be no Jaws Blu-ray. But Universal is planning the Back To The Future Trilogy for an early 2010 Blu-ray release for its 25th Anniversary. And next year is the 35th Anniversary of Jaws soooooo...who knows maybe next year. :cwink:

You may well be onto something here Red, good thinking!

Target has a Buy One Get One Free sale going on right now on select Blu-Rays.

I checked it out yesterday. The selection wasn't that great. The best title they had was Casino Royale, but there weren't any others on sale that I wanted.

I ended up going to Borders with a 40% off coupon and a $5 discount and I bought Coraline. Great movie! I did try to watch a little in 3D and yeah, it's definitely not as good. The 3D actually looked OK from what I saw, but the colors were all washed out and everything looked green and purple.

Toshiba Applies for BDA Membership
Toshiba Corporation announced today that the company has applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), and plans to introduce products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year. When Toshiba conceded defeat in the format war in February 2008, it reiterated that it would not make any Blu-ray products – until June 2009, when the Toshiba president hinted at future BD support.

The press release explains that Toshiba has decided to join the BDA "in light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike."

Back in February 2008, the spokesman for the BDA said that Toshiba was "more than welcome" to join the organization.

Rumor: Blu-ray Support Coming to iTunes 9 and iMacs

Apple has long dragged its feet when it comes to Blu-ray, but that might be about to change. According to news site Boy Genius Report, BD support is one of the features being added to iTunes 9. Additionally, a recent post on Apple Insider reports about Apple integrating Blu-ray into their new iMac line-up.

An announcement might happen as early as September.

I bought Shoot 'Em Up, Batman Begins, and V for Vendetta at Best Buy for $40. Not bad considering it's only the second time ever that I have bought blu-rays physically in a store.

...you just want...the book?

I already have the Matrix on blu-ray. But it's from the Ultimate Matrix Collection so it's in that incredibly slim case instead of a regular sized case or a kick ass digibook.

So if I already have the movie, why would I want to buy it again? But I sure would love to have that digibook.

Oh I see now, at first it came off a bit that you'd like the book, but not the movie (at all). I guess that'd be the same with me and Batman89. I have the 4 movies from the anthology boxset, but the digibook would be nice too.

I would like the book too, but I am quite happy with my DVD Ultimate Collection for now.

I remember seeing Waterworld in theaters when I was a wee one, I was not happy

Waterworld wasn't that bad of a movie for me. I never understood all the hate it got.

It's not so much the hate, but how much press the movie got for performing so underwhelming at the box office. Lots of movies bomb, but for Waterworld is kind of the de facto example of a movie tanking at the box office. So I think that reputation gives people the impression the movie isn't any good.
