The Horror Thread - Part 2

From what I read on the Jason set, 2 of the movies are rated versions, and a few extras were left off. Either way, I'd rather get the dvds for that series. Nightmare, now that's a BD set I need to get.

Night of the Creeps was a blind BD purchase. It was only 8 bucks, so I said why not. Glad I did, hell of a movie.

wait, what?! when did he speak? are you talking about the strange "flashback" to childhood thing, towards the end? i think i might reflexively smack the nearest person if he did speak.

INT. TUNNEL #3 (MODEL EFX)

Tons of lethal sewage, stopping for no one. Arriving in
seconds.

JASON'S FINAL CLOSE UP (EFX/FIBER OPTIC LENS)

He doesn't need vision to confirm what his other senses
already know. Jason's mouth begins to quaver...AND THE
FIRST WORDS HE HAS EVER SPOKEN COME OUT, IN THE VOICE OF
AN EIGHT YEAR OLD BOY:

JASON
Mmmmmmmmmommy...DON'T LET ME DROWN,
MOMMY...

Camera speeds toward his gaping mouth and DOWN HIS THROAT
as lightning arcs off his mucous covered insides. We
sink deeper into his guts, fire and smoke flaring into
our eves, eventually coming to a WELL IN THE PIT OF HIS
STOMACH, FILLED WITH BLOOD...and EIGHT YEAR OLD JASON IS
DROWNING IN IT.

YOUNG JASON
Hhhhelp me....

A split second later:

EXT. TUNNEL #3 (EFX) (SLOW MOTION)

The wall of deadly toxic liquid ENGULFS JASON.

that doesn't work. this movie relies entirely on Jason's cult status. taken out of context, "Jason Goes to Hell" is a really really stupid title. it only works because people can easily identify the hockey masked machete wielding killer (and the hand that grabs his mask at the end). and after the initial over-the-top shootout, it becomes a bait and switch. they promise Jason and then give you body hopping slug. they should be ashamed of themselves, imo.

That just means you can't put Jason out of your mind long enough to enjoy the movie. Like I said, it takes a certain amount of MENTAL DISCIPLINE to watch it without Jason coming to mind.

If the movie was about a generic body hopping demon slug that's searching for a specific body to enhabit and killing anyone that gets in its way during its search, you'd probably love it. But because it wasn't a generic demon slug, you have to FORCE yourself to see the movie from that perspective.

Some people can do that. Some people can't. I guess you're just one of the ones who can't.

It's not something I should have to do. When you use a familiar and money making logo/title, but radically change it so that it is really no longer that concept *coughManofSteelcough* you can't help but outrage a percentage of the viewers...who rightfully expected the concept being advertised.

True. Which is why I say that Jason Goes To Hell is a BAD FRIDAY THE 13th MOVIE, but that it is a GOOD HORROR MOVIE.

Man of Steel was irrefutably a Superman movie even if you don't like the particular characterization or tone. That movie was exactly as advertised, for better or for worse.

I'll grant you that it certainly was a guy in the Superman costume, that much is certain.

I'm just saying that's a completely different situation than the Jason film being discussed. Besides the problem with that film isn't Superman himself so much as everyone else around him.

Yeah, Jason Goes to Hell is definitely a worse example of misusing a title. Then again...this is a franchise that had a tv series that never even mentioned Jason, so...

There was rumor he was supposed to show at some point but it was cancelled first.

Night of the Creeps is one of my favorite 80's horror classics THRILL ME! Tom Atkins is classic! Slither is also imo one of the best monster/horror flicks of modern day such a fun and entertaining flick, I remember going to see it in the theater opening weekend by myself to an empty theater.

Hell yeah, completely forgot how well done Slither was. Gregg Henery is hilarious in that.

Wish we had a few more comet from the sky/small town midnight monster movies in the past few years.
I have decided to NOT purchase the new F13 blu-ray boxset per I already have the Crystal Lake to Manhattan set and I have the extras on that plus His Name was Jason and Crystal Lake Memories, the price is too high for just recycled extras (there are no new extras added here), I just wish I could get the newly released blu-rays separate.

Thanks, didn't know they went the recycled route. Definitely gonna skip the purchase for the time being.

Yeah, the price tag on that one makes it a much easier decision as well. $40 is a solid deal.

The NOES blu-ray boxset is on my must purchase list that baby is selling for around $40 brand new on Amazon, I've been waiting to get the extra cash to pick it up, it's definitely a top priority for me.

Jason Goes To Hell wasn't really a misuse of the title. Jason was in it and he did go to hell by the end.

Friday the 13th the series basically cashed in on the title. Frank Mancuso didn't even want to call it that but it was out of his hands.

Frank Mancuso Jr was done with producing the series after The New Blood.

Wasn't it because they couldn't use the title 'Friday the 13th'?

That's right they weren't at the time allowed to use the actual title Friday the 13th at that point when Sean Cunningham purchased the rights to use Jason and his likeness, that's why we never saw another F13 in the title until the remake.

Never mind the disappointment of the Jason character barely being on screen for more than 10 minutes. It also didn't help that a few years prior to JGTH I had discovered a great sci-fi/horror "B" movie called The Hidden that just happened to involve an alien body-hopping from one person to the next killing everyone in its path. So while watching JGTH I couldn't help but think the concept of Jason body-hopping was a blatant rip-off of that movie.

Hitman that avvy is one of the best I've ever seen my entire life, major props! :)

Thanks :) I actually just screen-capped a Friday the 13th video I made. I would post it but the song has cursing in it lol.

I added in The Wolf Man ('41) to my Halloween list, watching it right now I love this flick.

Picked up the Childs Play BR set. Never watched Part 3 or Bride so ill probably marathon them sometime soon.

I've never seen The Hidden. I may look it up at some point, as it sounds interesting.

All this really means is that the writer of JGTH was likely highly influenced by The Hidden (and possibly some other films, such as The Fallen, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Evil Dead, just to name a few). That's hardly the first time in Hollywood that that's ever happened. Likely won't be the last. Hell, the Thundarr script that I've written was inspired by more than just the cartoon, and the cartoon itself was inspired by Conan, Star Wars, Planet Of The Apes, and The Road Warrior.

The Hidden is awesome....unapologetically violent and it's definitely influenced by The Terminator.

The director of Jason Goes To Hell mentions that on the Crystal Lake Memories documentary, although he said that he never saw The Hidden until after he released JGTH.
