The Horror Thread - Part 2

Off the top of my head I would have say Cube was a nice surprise when I came across that one quite a few years back. Lovely Molly was a pretty good one too, I was a tad bit confused by the deer thing at the end, I only watched it once and might need to give it a second go. There was one movie you recently recommended that I watched two nights ago that was good, it involved a guy moving into his mother's old house and some animal thing is going after him.

Yeah...that deer thing in the end never should have happened. Lovely Molly did a good job of making it completely unclear about whether she was just crazy, drug-addled or if there was an actual paranormal threat...until that scene, which blew it. I like to think that we are just seeing what she was thinking she saw.

That other movie was The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh...a very under the radar movie that I found to be pretty effective. The end is up to debate...my personal take on it was that he was emotionally scarred from years of religious abuse, and the "monster" was in his head...and he finally was able to overcome the emotional scars and leave religion behind. Others see the end being completely different things.

I still love Child's Play 3, it was the first one I watched and then later watched the other ones.

Ok, so my wife and I weren't alone in regards to not quite understanding the deer thing. My original thoughts at the time was that it was an amalgamation of her dad and the dead deer she found, since it was standing upright like a human. From what I can remember she angrily was stabbing the deer earlier in the film and unless I'm thinking of something else, didn't the movie hint that she was abused or molested by her father?

Rosalind Leigh I definitely need to watch a second time. I like your interpretation of the monster. I remember the mother was saying at the end something about the monster representing loneliness. I really need to give it another viewing.

It's been years, but that's the one where the boy from the original is in boot camp right? I remember Chucky switches out the blanks with real bullets in that training excercise and one of them jumps on a grenade to save the others.

Lovely Molly: I think she was molested, yeah. The website hinted at various possible things that it could have been...a demon etc. But, I preferred it as just being a girl who'd lost her mind.

Last Will and Testament...: Yeah, I've seen some interpretations of it that the mother's ghost imagined the whole thing as part of her lonely hell. Others believe that he actually was attacked by a demon but was saved either by his mother's faith or his own lack of faith. It can go many ways (like my ex girlfriend). You bring your own bias into the movie and that affects what the movie is about to you. I'm an atheist, so I see the movie as being about a man who had religion drilled into his brain his entire life, but finally found the strength to no longer be afraid of not believing. A religious person may come away with a completely different view.

I find that generally more people actually think of Child's Play 2 as the best of the series compared to the first or third.

Ive only seen 1,2 and Seed so far, and I like one better than 2, but I liked 2 a lot.
I laughed harder than I should at "How's it hangin' Phil?"

Yup that's the one, that movie gave me the fear of getting a hair cut for months. lol

:funny:

I need to rewatch the first three films, it's been far too long.

Another movie that I only had on VHS that I wanted to watch again was Pumpkinhead. I'm still crossing my fingers it gets a Blu-ray release some day.

I'm a little embarrassed that I used to be scared of Chucky. Freddy, Jason, Michael? Not at all, but that damn doll was terrifying.

Same here, I was absolutely terrified of Chucky for the longest time of my life. He was hideous!

So I bought all 7 seasons of Tales from the Crypt. I've honestly never watched the show before, is it worth the $70 I paid for the whole thing?

I'm shocked that you've never seen the show and even more surprised you did a blind buy on the series. The early season are great. There are several gems and its interesting to see so many awesome guest stars. The show has one of my favorite intro/themes. Also the first feature film Demon Knight is a must watch.

I'm 24 and my parents were pretty strict with the HBO until I was 10 or 11. That's when I started getting into horror and have been a fan ever since. The show was over by then, and since I only used torrents and stuff for like a year when I was 16, I never saw it that way, I have Netflix now but I don't know if it is on there, and the seasons just now have been turning up really cheap. I've heard of it for years, it's almost as we'll known as the Twilight Zone in terms of horror series, and I've wanted to see it. That said I had extra money and decided since Sam's had the whole thing relatively cheap, why not. I think I hope I enjoy it.

So what movies do you guys highly recommend? I still have a list of movies to see before the 31st, but I just want to know if there is anything that I MUST see.

James Whale's Frankenstein, John Carpenter's Halloween, Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, among others.

For those of you who haven't seen it yet...the remake of Maniac just hit instant streaming on Netflix. It's definitely worth a watch!

I just checked that out. I've never seen the original, but damn that film was disturbing. I like how the pov was done and also thought it had a good soundtrack. I cringed at the scalping. So brutal!

I agree. In fact, one of my few issues with the film are the times when it breaks the pov (like in the flashbacks). But yeah...this dude didn't just kill chicks, he watched the blade slice.

What was interesting about the flashbacks though was that they were presented kind of as delusions or day dreams and actually maintained the perspective.

that's understandable. Chucky meets kids on their level. he also spent most of those movies targeting kids. Freddy's his only competition. and his victims were mostly college aged kids pretending to be much much younger. Jason and Michael basically only effed with adults until Laurie's niece showed up.

you better believe it! i think it might be time to replace my own collection. i bought them burned because they hadn't actually put them all on dvd, yet. best investment i've ever made.

$10 a season is a deal IMO. I may get that myself.

I used to see glimpses of it when we had cable off and on until the reruns were shown on Fox. I did buy a couple seasons on DVD but stopped for some reason. Now I'm tempted to get the others. I'm sure you'll enjoy them. The episode with Joe Pesci is still one of my favorites

There's one point where it breaks pov without explanation. I think when he kills a girl in a parking lot. The rest I didn't mind so much.

The part when it breaks in the parking lot is recreation of the poster for the original film.

Watching Child's Play 3 for the first time. I'm only 15 minutes in, but so far it doesn't seem awful. Gotta say though, the kid they got for the 16 year old Andy actually looks pretty close to Alex Vincent. Moreso than trying to sell me Nick Stahl and Christian Bale as the same person.
