So, yeah, this showed up in Netflix's horror section: Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead

I saw that a few nights ago and was tempted to watch it. I think I'll wait for someone else to check it out and see what they say about it. I have far too many movies on my cue that I don't want to waste time on films I'm unsure about.

Recently watched the original Maniac and thought it was pretty good. I like both the original and the remake but I'm not sure which one I like better.

Well boys, it doesn't look like 2014 has much to offer for our favorite genre. Keep in mind, this is for theatrically released movies:

2014 Horror Films

October 17
Dracula Untold

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0829150/reference

October 24
Paranormal Activity 5
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2473510/reference

And that's it.

Some random observations:
- Lots of ghosts and demons and possessions. Sigh.
- We get two Paranormal Activity movies.
- We get a sequel to The Purge.
- Dracula Untold seems interesting at face value.
- Paranormal Activity seems to have become the new reigning champ for Horror series.
- Another year with no Freddy, Michael, Jason, or Pinhead. :csad:
- Everything else seems interesting, but I don't have enough information to make a real judgment call.

Other than that, seems like kind of a "Blah" year next year.

Yeah, especially coming after a fairly healthy year for horror this year, that line up for next year sucks.

That Hammer film The Quiet One has potential though. I like the cast and the premise looks interesting.

I had a hard time choosing because both are very good imo. I think the first one is a cult classic and a gem of it's time while the remake did it's own thing creatively and is one of the better modern horror films released in the past 5 years.

One thing many people complain about is that they left out the shotgun kill in the the car (Tom Savini's death) but overall I found that the new version of Frank wouldn't really use a gun for his killing. Though I admit the kill itself is one of the best and most brutal of all time.

No surprise with how many ghost and demon films there are. When it comes to the demon films, they better actually have a monstrous looking demon in all it's glory. I'm tired of people taking the cheap way out and leaving it at demon possession, Exorcist style.

Dracula Untold could be really cool.

As for Freddy, Jason and Michael. I think it will be quite some time before we get another film for any of them. Pinhead, I don't care for a remake, even if Clive Barker is behind it. If they want to make an all new film(with Doug Bradley), I'm all for it. A remake of The Hellbound Heart? No thank you. The movie did make some changes from the novella but overall the remake would just be a very similar film with CGI. That Frank resurrection effects still hold up today as far as I'm concerned and I wouldn't want glossy looking CGI to ruin it.

I fully agree that the remake version of Frank wouldn't use a gun. They were fairly different killers and it wouldn't fit Wood's version. I'm contemplating if I want to buy either one of those films, or both. I really enjoyed them. It's funny that it took me this long to see the original considering I would always see the cover of the VHS years ago when I was at a video rental store. I just never happened to rent it for some reason.

I did watch Stalled and it was an okay horror-comedy. The guy was practically a one man three stooges act to justify the setup of being trapped in a women's toilet stall but it wasn't terrible. The gore was decent, there were a few good laughs but a lot of groaners, and not the zombie kind.

And it had the obligatory setup for a sequel although I'm not sure how much more you can force a story for this guy to not get eaten straight away.

Best horror movie of 2013 and the best one I've seen in a long time. Maybe since The Mist.

I'm really excited for Devils Due and The Quiet Ones. That's about it though.

one you left off your list.

Oculus - April 18, 2014 (STARRING Karen Gillan (Doctor Who, Guardians Of The Galaxy and Katee Sackhoff (Riddick, Battlestar Galactica & 24)
Story centers on a murder that left two children orphans with authorities charging the brother while his sister believed that the true culprit was a haunted antique mirror. Now completely rehabilitated and in his 20s, the brother is ready to move on but his sister is determined to prove that the haunted mirror was responsible for destroying their family.

Isn't Joe Hill's Horns starring Daniel Radcliffe and Juno Temple coming out next year as well?

One man Horror studio Jason Blum is producing a horror/thriller called LAZARUS starring Olivia Wilde, American Horror Story star Evan Peters and Community's Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) and Once Upon a Time's Sarah Bolger.

The story centers on a brain mapping team of scientists that unleashes a devastating force when they reanimate a colleague who died accidentally.

It is entirely possible that I'll watch more Horror movies this year (and I'm sure that if I really thought about a few movies some more, I'd change my lists) and some films (like Sharknado, Gravity and Girls Against Boys) don't quite fit my view of what can be accepted as Horror...but my lists...

4. Antiviral
5. The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh

2014 Horror Films

wow. that's a long list of crap. i can almost see the cookie cutter trailers for these.

There's been some good or decent straight to video/independent horror in the last couple years so that should suffice. Also there are some cult classics that have recently been coming to blu ray.

Last night I watched Francis ford Coppola's Dracula. There are some great elements and Gary Oldman did a fantastic job . Winona was so amazingly beautiful. I like Keanu , but he was terrible. They should of reversed his role with Cary Elwes.

The movie is pretty good but that is easily the worst Blu Ray I have.

I know that I'm getting Tombs of the Blind Dead for Christmas... can't wait to watch it.

I saw Oculus at TIFF this year. It came in 2nd as audience favorite. It was really good, can't wait to see it again. So glad it's coming out in April!

I'm gonna have to check that out. Speaking of bad transfers, I'm heavily considering getting the original Black Xmas on blu ray. I just want to see the film. I don't have a computer at the moment .

Its weird Dracula on Blu Ray is really bad. The green mist is cool but the rest is fuzzy and pretty disappointing. From what I've read it was made to be that way. Go Figure???

I'm getting that for Christmas too. That's one of my top 10.

That's how cheap and easy those are to make.

PA: The Marked Ones was supposed to come out this past October, but got pushed back. Looking back, there was a wide open space in October without Horror (except Carrie, which tanked hard). They could have made some serious bank.

Yeah it was really strange for not having almost any horror films in October, I can't remember the last time that happened.

Just saw The Battery (2013)

Man, the Horror press is LOVING this zombie movie...and boy is the hype undeserved!

First of all, I cant help but compare this to Resolution, if only because it's an ultra low budget 2013 Horror film about 2 guys out in the middle of nowhere trying to get along. That is where the similarities end and Resolution is FAR better in every respect.

It's boring as hell for most of the film. The soundtrack is mostly provided by various songs being played on headphones, and we get the joy of sitting there watching as the guy listens to almost the entire song several times (different songs, but still). There are several montages of the two stars doing mundane crap...throwing a baseball back and forth, fishing etc. It all gets rather dull...but you know that the plot will kick in eventually (it never really does though). Sadly, you know that the idea is the same as many other zombie movies...humans are the real threat and can't be trusted. Plus, one of the lead actors is pretty bad. His character is annoying (refusing to catch his own fish, or even cook his own damn food...refuses to kill zombies, listens to loud music on headphones in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, is too lazy to even gather supplies...and at one crucial point is too lazy to look for something that is mere feet away from him even though he's totally screwed without it)...but the actor playing this unintentionally unsympathetic character drops the ball as well. The end is supposed to be a tense scene...but man, I was bored because the movie wasn't showing any of the action (opting instead to focus entirely on a guy waiting for the action be finished). It's just a boring movie.

I have to say I keep seeing previews for The Devils Due and that film looks ridiculously bad, I seriously laughed so hard when I saw it my wife thought it was a joke or a spoof flick.

...it's not a spoof flick? i must be confusing this with 'Hell Baby.'

The ONLY movie on that list I'm intrigued by in The Purge 2. While I hated the first one, I absolutely love the concept of one day where everything is legal. I know, I know, it's super farfetched. But, when you suspend disbelief, it's kind of enticing. It's strange to think about if the world really did have one day where everything was legal.

The first movie, in my opinion, had potential to be something great. They had this vast canvas to do anything they wanted. An interesting concept and they pissed it away by making it a horrible house invasion story with STUPID characters.

I feel like the movie would have been a lot better if they were to have the story take place outside. Like...Ethan Hawke is leaving from work and believes he'll make it home before curfew. Then, when he gets to the parking lot, he sees his car has been tampered with. Someone slashed his tires or something to keep him out during the purge hours.

Then it becomes a story about Hawke trying to avoid his assailant while surviving the random acts of violence occurring around him. I don't know, just an idea.

well it'd be better than another home invasion. i didn't much care for the first movie. it seemed like something the Twilight Zone would have done better and in a shorter amount of time.
