I really liked PA1 but PA 3 and Marked Ones are the best ones out of the series. You can watch both without having seen the others.

I'm saving John Carpenter's Halloween till the big day. I've probably seen that movie more times than any other in my life.

While I love the idea of a new Universal Shared universe...these will always be my version of the monsters...minus the classics which I still love too...

There needs to be a Creature remake. Do it mo-cap like the Apes movies. Yeahhhhhh

Mo-cap is definitely the way to go. Definitely appreciate when they use that over straight CGI.

Ugh, I hate being broke. The Nightbreed DC is out today, and I really want to get it.

Watching Zombeavers (2014) which is obviously the greatest movie title since Monsturd. I remember the producers of this had made a point of saying that this was not going to be like Sharknado...that they were genuinely making a Horror movie...and man...I sure hope they were kidding. A movie called Zombeavers better not take itself seriously.

No spoilers inside outside of basic concept stuff you'd see in a synopsis.
Fortunately, it's obvious from scene one that this is a Horror/Comedy.

A group of friends go out to a cabin in the woods and get attacked by zombeavers.

Um...yeah...that's basically the film. What, you were expecting more?

There's a real old school vibe in this. I know that A LOT of Horror movies, especially Slashers, claim to have an old school vibe...but thats just because they are ripping off the classics. This one manages to capture that feel.

There's a few solid laughs...and come on...it's zombeavers killing college kids...you're either down with that concept or you aren't. The beavers are fairly cheep puppets, but who cares?? They look cool enough for me.

It's less than 70 minutes...so you aren't investing too much time into watching it.

My review for The Taking of Deborah Logan

A surprisingly believable mockumentary horror film about a woman with Alzheimer until it turns into something else. It reminded me lot of The Last Exorcism minus the crappy ending. The scares was really effective, the acting was top notch, and the mockumentary format worked really well. It's a shame this never got a theatrical release yet stupid ass Annabelle got one. It's definitely worth checking out on netflix, it might be my 2nd favorite horror film this year after Afflicted.
8.5/10

Thanks for that, Kane. A friend of mine (who isnt generally a horror fan) had good things to say about that as well...but I've been putting off watching it because of the found footage aspect. I guess I need to give it a shot.

Out of all the horror movies you guys watched this year, which one was the best? I want to pick the Phantom Carriage (11/10), but it's not really a horror movie...so:

City of the Dead (also known as Horror Hotel).

My full list of movies from October...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 - Haven't watched it since I was a kid. It was pretty damn bad. Probably the worst Nightmare.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil - Seen the a couple times now. It's great. Love it.

Carrie (remake) - First time watching. So very meh.

Odd Thomas - First time. I liked it. Didn't love it, but I would recommend it if you're looking for a movie to watch.

You're Next - First time. Decent.

Freddy vs Jason - First time since theater. Not great by any stretch, but a fun watch.

The Monster Squad - I watch this all the time. My #2 favorite movie ever. This was my first time seeing it in a theater.

Friday the 13th - Great as always.

Friday the 13th (remake) - First time in a few years. I still really like it. It gives me what I want in a Friday/slasher movie.

Candyman - First time since I was a kid. Still really good and creepy.

Trick r Treat - A Halloween tradition for me. I love it.

Halloween 3: Season of the Witch - First time ever. Bad. Just bad. I was always curious to watch it, and now I have that out of my system, but damn that sucked.

Hocus Pocus - Another Halloween tradition. A favorite since I was a kid.

Monster Squad (again!) - My wife and I watch it every year on Halloween. Just can't beat it.

I also finally got my wife to start watching Buffy (one of my favorite shows ever) with me, so we made it through season one and two during October. I think that counts as Halloween viewing.

Here's how I spent my October 31st

I didn't start watching any horror stuff until around 6pm as I didn't want to do what I'd done in previous years and burn myself out watching too much in one day. Started off with The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror XXII (seen it a dozen times mind), not the worst Halloween special but it was one that continued the poor trend of spoofing movies that aren't horror.

Then I watched Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask II, not seen this part for a lot of years but surpisingly (unlike the first part) it still holds up and I got those sane fun feeling I did from it when I watched in one Halloween many moons ago.

Then me and my wife watched Trick 'r Treat, I introduced her to this film last year and she's been saying to me for weeks we have to watch it again this Halloween. I must say Ai'm glad we did watch it again, there might not be a film more perfect to watch on this day than this one. Seen it neany times and it gets better with each viewing.

Finally after an hours break I sat and watched Halloween II (1981), again it's a film I've watched many many times but each time I watch it those same feelings rush back. This one is pretty much cemented as my second favourite in the Halloween series (right after the original of course) and plot holes, faults and all I'm gonna love this one forever.

All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my Halloween night, didn't get many trick or treaters though but watched what I watched in the right mood is as good as it gets. Can't wait for next year!

I had some time to kill during an overnight shift last night at the children's home I work in.

I watched the original Universal "Frankenstein" as per my annual Halloween tradition.

With more time to kill I popped in the special features disc from the 75th anniversary edition. Despite having the DVD for about 8 years now I never really got around to delving too much into the features.

One of the features was really good documentary about Universal's early horror films and other films of the same time period. An interesting argument that the film makes is that many of the earliest horror films, and especially those in which Lon Chaney famously transformed himself, borrowed from and reacted to the disfigurement and violence experienced by soldiers from the First World War. The soldier photos they pair with film clips makes it all too obvious, but its something I would have never thought of.

Last night/this morning was one of the best days I've ever experienced watching movies. Went to the second annual A Nite to Dismember at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, a movie marathon that last near 9 hours over 5 movies (and one unmentionable short due to... issues). Almost won a worst costume contest, and my friend won the trivia contest.

It went Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, best and worst costume contests, Bride of Frankenstein (amazing film), trivia contest, Friday the 13th Part 2, unnameable short, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, free breakfast, and Return of the Living Dead (my main goal for this show). All in all, well worth the $50 it cost me. Can't wait until next year.

So, this year's 31 Nights of Halloween went like this:

0.5: John Carpenter's The Thing
1. Carnival of Souls '62
2. Thir13en Ghosts '01
3. Cabin in the Woods
4. Cannibal Campout
5. Video Violence
6. Zombieland
7. Puppet Master
8. Puppet Master II
9. Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge
10. Scream
11. Saw
12. Saw II
13. Night of the Creeps
14. The Addams Family
15. Addams Family Values
16. Re-Animator
17. Bride of Re-Animator
18. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari '62
19. The Fly '58
20. The Return of the Fly
21. Two Thousand Maniac!
22. Halloween III: Season of the Witch
23. Troll 2
24. Plan 9 From Outer Space
25. Cannibal Holocaust
26. Zombie Cop
27. Maximum Overdrive
28. Michael Jackson's Thriller (short)
29. Hellyfish (short)
30. Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn
31. Bride of Frankenstein
32. Friday the 13th Part 2
33. Dracula: Prince of Darkness
34. Return of the Living Dead

City of the Dead (also known as Horror Hotel).

I honestly can't keep track of older movies that I saw this year...but so far my favorite Horror movie of 2014 is Only Lovers Left Alive. Of course...this isn't REALLY Horror...but it involves vampires, so it counts for me even though it isn't trying to scare you. But if that doesn't count, my favorite is Honeymoon. But there's still some time left in the year for this to change.

Watching Zombeavers (2014) which is obviously the greatest movie title since Monsturd. I have to check this out now...I watched the trailer and it looks like a fun ride.

Watching The Babadook (2014) from first time writer/director Jennifer Kent. I encourage the idea of new (especially female) points of view coming into Horror.

I talk a bit about themes (without being specific), and give the basic synopsis...but am limited in that I don't want to ruin the movie. Lord knows I could talk about this for quite a while...

Horror is in the middle of an absolute GLUT of haunted house/possession movies. All of them are basically the exact same movie. Some are done well (The Conjuring), but they are still the same freaking thing.

I REALLY appreciate it when a movie goes beyond the typical haunting story. Lovely Molly from 2012, The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh from 2013, and now The Babadook (I'm intentionally leaving out the wonderful haunting comedy Housebound from earlier this year, because it didn't have the deeper intentions of the others).

The Babadook is about a widowed mother raising her brat son by herself. Meanwhile, the son is obsessed with the idea that a monster is going to kill him.

We are no longer scared by Horror films. No one checks their shower for the boogeyman anymore. So, the trick is to give us characters so well developed that we fear for their safety. Why do 99% of Horror movies overlook this? The Babadook does not. This movie is ALL character. The strain of life is right there in this woman's eyes. The movie hinges on a solid lead performance, and actress Essie Davis delivers. It's VERY rare to see lead performances in Horror films like this!

But...all of the cliches of haunted house movies are there. I kind of wish it had avoided that stuff, because the movie got less compelling for me the closer it got to the end. Fortunately, I cared enough about these characters to hope for the best for them. Ultimately, I cant really talk about why I can overlook it because it's a spoiler.

Bottom line...probably the best traditional/mainstream-esque Horror movie of the year...an accolade that rests on the shoulders of a very strong lead performance and an outside the box haunting story, despite having all of the cliches one might expect.

I watched The Babadook and thought it was good as well. A solid character driven horror film.

The film was a little mix of a bunch of horror films like The Ring, Nightmare On Elm Street, The Shining and so on yet it didn't feel like a rip off version of those films. The film still felt original.

Finally a horror film that Lived up to the hype.
