The Horror Thread - Part 4

Yes, Thrillers exist...so...Nonstop and Silence of the Lambs suddenly become the same genre????

That is silly. There are clearly Horror Thrillers and Action Thrillers etc. It's just crazy to say that The Sixth Sense isn't Horror because it's the same genre as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. In what world is that????

As Gremlin said, people have a low opinion of Horror, so OF COURSE Silence of the Lambs, Jaws etc can't be Horror...those are GOOD movies...and Horror can't be good! Horror is guys in costumes stabbing naked blonde chicks...well...except in Psycho...that doesn't count because it's good.

I love Horror, and I refuse to have a low opinion of the genre just because other people do. Yes, most Horror movies are bad...but when you accept that movies like The Sixth Sense, Jaws etc are subsets of Horror, you open it up to much more than crappy slasher films.

The Sixth Sense is pretty squarely a horror film. As is Jaws. Its weird to see someone try to sort of equate them in terms of quality though. The Sixth Sense is kind of s***. When did I say a horror film couldn't be good? All I meant was, while Horror is a broad term, its not completely meaningless to the point where you can just slap it on anything.

:awesome:

People seem to view horror as one-note. Like, as soon as a horror film explores different facets and subgenres it's somehow not a horror movie. I've ran into people who refuse to call Jaws horror just because it takes on an adventure vibe in the second half. This drives me insane. YES, there IS an adventure vibe in the second half, but that doesn't negate the HORROR vibe of the first half, nor does it allow you to ignore the HORROR that is happening within the adventure half.

Jaws is a horror film. You used to be able to find it in the horror section at Blockbuster. If you want to get detailed about it, you can easily call it a horror/action adventure film.

Same with Alien. Some people refuse to call it a horror movie and label it sci-fi just because it takes place on a space ship, yet the actual sci-fi element has no real barring on the plot. Everything about Alien is horror. From it's set-up, to it's monster, to it's atmosphere. It's much more horror than sci-fi but the sci-fi elements are enough to make a Horror/sci-fi film.

The point is that there are a million subsets of Horror...and while YOU might not have a low opinion of the genre...there is a rampant effort to call anything good "Suspense" or "Thriller"...when those can be subsets of Horror. Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Shining simply are not the same genre and it would make ZERO sense to put them next to each other in a category...but it does FEEL right to put The Shining near The Conjuring. They both FEEL like Horror movies. For me, there are some, like...Warm Bodies (the recent zombie romance/comedy) does not in any way FEEL like a Horror movie...but I GUESS it is...and I won't really argue if someone says it is.

People say that Alien isn't a horror film?

Yes. I have had long arguments over this. I have friends who will frequently mock me for my "false" claim that Alien is Horror. They say it's a Sci-Fi film, and therefore can't also be Horror. I say that often the two are intertwined.

Legendary pictures in debuting footage from GDT's Crimson Peak as we speak, and it sounds amazing so far.

I mean, that's like saying a Dracula film isn't a horror film because its also a historical drama.

I am sure that there are those who say that Dracula is a Thriller because it isn't scary. Well...no Horror film scares me. I'm not a child. But I know that Seven makes me feel a certain uncomfortable feeling that Saw does not.

It's like porn...I can't define it, but I know it when I see it. If a movie gives me a sense of dread or has a gothic feel or makes me uncomfortable, I consider it Horror...because I'm not afraid of demons or undead slasher killers...Horror has to be something more than that to me.

As a big Freddy fan, I was happy to be able to meet Robert Englund about 6 months ago, but I saw this today and I'm intrigued. Thought I'd share:

Watched Life After Beth, a zombie comedy starring Dane Dehaan and Aubrey Plaza.

Zombie comedies aren't really my thing. I have no love at all for the Return of the Living Dead franchise (most of which I've never seen...I just hate the "braaaaains" nonsense)...and I wasn't even in love with Shaun of the Dead the way everyone else was (and certainly indie film makers loved it...Juan of the Dead?? Seriously? A parody of a parody??)

Anyway, This dude and his girlfriend are on the outs...she's pretty much breaking up with him. She dies...he's sad because there's all these things he wanted to say to her...and thankfully, she comes back to life so gets the chance to tell her! She doesn't realize that she was ever dead, and her family try to hide that fact from her. He sees this as a chance to be the boyfriend she always wanted and have a new chance with the relationship.

As I said, I don't like comedies. I feel like had this not been so concerned about the laughs, it could have told a powerful story. Think about it...haven't we all had a relationship that ended and we wanted to go back and say and do things differently and even though the relationship is dead, it's still there in your mind and you can't let go??? But if you did get a chance at the relationship again, wouldn't it all just go to hell?? That's kind of the point of this movie...to show how difficult and traumatic it is to break up and try to move on with your life when you really just want them back.

Fortunately, some of the comedy works and I did laugh. There's some pretty silly stuff here. Aubrey Plaza is good as the back from the dead girlfriend with memory lapses.

If you like zombie comedies, give it a shot.

Blasphemy of the highest order. Return of the Living Dead is untouchable. :wow::wow:

Because no one wants to touch it. :o

Just kidding; I enjoy the first 3 Return of the Living Dead movies, and even the 4 &5th SciFi channel sequels, though they didn't have the spirit of the first 3.

Heretic, how did you feel about Warm Bodies, Boy Eats Girl and My Boyfriend's Back ?

I thought that Warm Bodies was cute. I enjoyed it more than I imagined I would when I was told it was "Twilight, but zombies." I haven't seen those others.

So the remaster of Texas Chainsaw is coming out in September on blu ray. Anyone planning on picking it up. I'm excited for it. I never really gave the original Tobe Hooper a shot, but I reckon now's a great time.

I'm really considering it but it'd be the third time I've bought TCM, so this would have to be the definitive last time for quite some time for me.

I'm in the same boat…and it's never the last time…I say it every time and I'm ten editions in on some films…

I know, I'm the same way. I'm not sure I have ten of anything, but for example with Halloween, I think I have:

Halloween 25th Anniversary 2-disc DVD
Halloween 30th Anniversary box set (Michael Myers mask packaging with original film DVD and Blu Ray, and Extended Edition DVD, plus H4, H5, and Documentary.)
Halloween 35th Anniversary Blu Ray

...and now I'm waiting on the Halloween Complete Collection (the 15-disc version). Not to mention including bootlegs I've picked up from conventions I have something like 6 versions of Halloween 6.

I too find it annoying how some people don't consider some films as "horror" movies simply because they are quality productions. Alien, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Jaws and Se7en are ALL horror films in my eyes. it pisses me off when the term "horror" is associated with low quality/low budget movies. I had a friend who refused to accept that The Exorcist was a horror film because the religious ideas it presented were too brainy for a horror film and the movie itself was of too high a quality to be considered horror!

Ah well. Life is too short. Long live horror films. In all their various forms.

Really? I'd almost say The exorcist is more horror than any of the other films you mentioned, but I also agree on those. It's sort of how "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" is still clearly horror, but its played just as much a court room drama as a horror film.

Raptor Ranch

God awful b-movie I think even SyFy would pass up. That movie was dumb all around in every respect.

If The Exorcist is not Horror, then there is no such thing as Horror. But yeah...I feel you...I get it all the time.

I don't know, I just don't consider Silence of the Lambs or Se7en as Horror.

I'm picking up that new Chainsaw, because I only have the DVD circa 2004.
