The Horror Thread - Part 6

Just need to find one with Christopher Lee on the set. Seems hard to find the Hammer films on those sets here
Those are usually public domain films, like Night of the Living Dead and Manos: The Hands of Fate.

I think the Hammer films are still under copyright somewhere.

I'll be seeing Dracula on Sunday and Halloween in a week at the theater!
I love watching classics in theater. Last Halloween, a friend and I hit up a midnight movie marathon Halloween night and saw Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn, Bride of Frankenstein, Friday the 13th: Part 2, Dracula - Prince of Darkness, and Return of the Living Dead. The theme was sequels. Going back this year for A Nite to Dismember 3 at the Nitehawk, which has a theme of horror throughout the decades. Going to start with Poltergeist (82), House on Haunted Hill (59), a mystery 2000s film (the idea of this frightens me), A Bay of Blood (71) and Scream (96), plus games, contests, drinks, short films, etc. Last year we got out at 9 AM. Only half the audience made it through to morning.

Glad I haven't watched that Bay of Blood dvd yet.

I know Halloween III: Season of The Witch gets a lot of flak but I like it, especially this performance by Dan O'Herlihy.

What I've watched so far this weekend:

Welcome To My Dark Side (a documentary about women in horror)

Vampires Revealed (a History Channel special on the history of the vampire legend)

Evil Dead (the original)

Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn

Army Of Darkness

Today I'm planning on watching Friday The 13th Parts 4, 5, and 6.

I was listening to University of South Carolina's radio station last night and heard the Silver Shamrock theme, the party song from The Return of the Living Dead, a sound bite of Dr. Loomis from part 6, and the groovy opening credits song in Friday 3.

Saw the Dracula double feature today, loved it. The Spanish version is clearly better, even without Lugosi.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a Hammer set at K-Mart for $8.00

I'm watching Nightbreed for the first time and not even 30 seconds in, I can call Elfman doing the score because its basically Batman '89 re-hashed.

God, does he make himself look like a hack when he just filters 3-5 great scores over 20 films.

The Batman score itself borrows themes from a number of movies including the original Wolf Man.

Watched Tales of Halloween last night, after an excellent first story unfortunately the film is a mixed bag. While I never think it gets bad (although the demon witch segment came close to that) it never touches greatness after the first story. I really can't help thinking this would have made for a better TV series, some segments are just way way too short. The only other one I really liked was the one where the woman can't turn around if she hears the woman cackling. A few more minutes of suspense with that would have really helped and I imagine as a twenty to thirty minute episode would have been better.

Overall I'd give the film a 6/10.

Low-rent Trick R Treat is what i'm calling it. I did enjoy the cameos and the references in it.

Just watched The Faculty(1998) and I LOVED it :applaud

Watched all three Hatchet films back to back to back. They're nothing groundbreaking, but otherwise still enjoyable old-school slasher throwbacks. Also it's appropriate that Kane Hodder plays Victor Crowley since he feels like Jason 2.0.

IS the Nightbreed Cabal Cut different from the Blu Ray Director's Cut? If so, is it available anywhere?

So did anyone see Krampus got a PG-13 by the MPAA. Was not expecting that.

edit: Actually after looking it up...it's two different things. I saw the directors cut that's on Netflix and the Cabal cut is actually 160 mins long.

I was pretty sure there was a difference, and I didn't think the Cabal cut had been released on home media. I've got the Blu Ray set with the original and the Director's Cut, plus a comic and booklet that Scream Factory put out as a limited edition last year. IF the Cabal Cut had been released, I'd need to track it down too.

Has anyone seen Circle?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3118452/

I just saw it and here's my review...

Going in knowing almost nothing about this movie, it's probably the most surprising horror film i've seen this year. The premise is pretty basic yet very complex. It's 50 people stuck in one place who ultimately have to decide who dies next before the timer ends. This pretty much reveals the most fascinating horror character, people. It's got a great Twilight Zone level feel to it, think of it as a mash up between 12 Angry Men and Cube done as a sick game show. It brings up a lot of social issues and prejudices which always makes for great horror and the plot of who goes out next always keeps you guessing. The only problems I had with the movie was probably the ending, I kinda wanted to explore more of the plot.
9/10

"The Cabal Cut" of Nightbreed is essentially an assembly cut of all the scenes they shot. A lot of what the studio cut out was thought to be lost for a long time and was found a few years back. The extra scenes were added and it was screened at a few festivals as the "Cabal Cut."

The director's cut is re-edited down from the Cabal cut.

On another note, I finally checked out "We Are What We Are" on Netflix. I have to say I was quite taken aback by a lot of that film. I enjoyed it a lot. It was nice being able to be shocked by something again.

I'll have to check out the original which was apparently from Mexico.

Anyone here check out MOLD! Found it at Forbidden Planet a few years back as a DIY release before it was sold in stores. Find it to be a fun movie.

NICE I'll have to check Thursday! The closest K mart here is 15 miles away, a Big K Thanks C!!
