The Horror Thread - Part 7

Just saw Host. I really enjoyed it! The one hour length was perfect...didn’t drag out the scares for too long. 8/10
I thought the same thing about Rammbock when I first saw it a few years ago. It's only 61 minutes long and gives you a good zombie flick in that time. It has become a favorite zombie flick of mine.

I really liked Rammbock as well and I'm surprised more people don't talk about it honestly. It's a pretty underrated zombie flick and movies like that and Host show you that you don't always need two hours of character development or build-up to make a quality horror film.

My friends and I almost skipped it completely on Netflix because of the generic as **** poster it used. We just finished a Basket Case marathon and wanted one more flick before calling it a night. We almost skupped it when scrolling flicks until we gave the description a read. So glad we did, we instantly thought the film was great and each own a copy, ****ty cover art aside.

Mike Flanagan is truly one of the best modern horror directors working today IMO. Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House and Gerald's Game were all great and I really liked Hush and Ouija: Origin of Evil as well. Even his weaker films like Oculus, Before I Wake and Absentia have there good qualities, although I know Oculus has a pretty decent sized fanbase, but I wasn't that crazy about it honestly.

So I'm working on my Horror marathon next month, but I need a couple new movies from 2020, anyone got recs?

Here's what I got so far:

Host
Amulet
Sputnik
The Other Lamb
1BR

I've already seen:

Invisible Man
We Summon The Darkness
Gretel & Hansel
The Lodge
The Rental
The Platform
VFW
Color Out of Space
Swallow
Blood Quantum
Relic
The Beach House, really dug it. Low budget and atmospheric Lovecraftian film.
Has anyone seen the movie Host? Heard good things. I might get a free trial of Shudder just to see that movie.
One of the better found footage films in a while.

Have you guys seen the movie Hush...that’s on Netflix right now? I think I’ll check it out since it’s from Mike Flanagan (loved Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep).

Hush and Gerald's Game are great. Hush has high rewatchability. In fact, it's my default horror film when I'm in the mood and wanna put something on.

I also really dug The Beach House, but apparently some didn't and I understand why. It's a slow movie, but I think the payoff in the third act is so worth it and its atmospheric as hell. The Color Out of Space was a pretty solid Lovecraftian horror film too even with Nic Cage hamming it up at times.

31 Nights of Halloween have begun.

01. Repulsion

First time watch for me. Off to a strong start, I feel.

I just watched Hell Fest, I’d been putting it off for a while as I’d heard bad things but I absolutely loved it. A fun slasher film that has a great setting which they used to great effect. I’d heard the film had no gore and I don’t get why anyone would say that there is plenty and some awesome kills to boot. If you’re a fan of the slasher genre I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed Hell Fest too. It's a pretty solid slasher flick and we need way more of those IMO. Haunt was another one that also used a similar haunted house/amusement park setting quite well, but I liked Hell Fest even more than that film. That ending is still creepy as hell too and I do consider both great films to watch over Halloween.

Oh dude such an effective ending, I really want a sequel but I read it’s unlikely. Although maybe that’s ultimately a good thing.

I’ll have to check out Haunt, thanks for the recommendation

I watched Devil (2010) tonight and I really enjoyed it, it’s not a film you could watch more than once imo but as a one off watch it’s really entertaining.

I also watched The Rental (2020) too and boy was that disappointing. I was bored to hell with the characters, the film was too serious and there’s no F’n payoff. Also [spoiler/]the killer is just some random guy, like WTF? he just pops up doe the final act, there’s some POV stuff at times but it’s just poorly done and you forget about it.[/spoiler]. I wouldn’t recommend this one.
