The Horror Thread - Part 7

31 Nights of Halloween

01. Repulsion
02. The Cabin in the Woods
03. Night of the Creeps
04. The Tingler
05. Bloodsucking Bastards
06. Vampires vs The Bronx
07. The Blob '88
08. Don't Let Them In

Lackluster flick. Best thing was the song that played over the credits. And I broke my HDMI cable that connected my tv to my computer during this, so it makes me even less inclined to like it.

1. Scarecrows Revenge
2. Alive
3. Frankensteins Army
4. Bones
5. Haunt
6.Boar

7. Leprechaun Returns

Decent movie for the most part.
There are two neat and unique kills, the gore and effects are nice enough.
The biggest problem of the movie, is that all of the characters act ten times dumber than needed.
They take selfies with the leprechaun and act like his existence is not a big deal...WTF?
They are supposed to carry the movie but you only want them to get killed because they are so bland and stupid.
The movie series never was really THAT good, so maybe this is good enough.
Its far better than the try at the quasi reboot they tried in the past.

1. Sleepy Hollow
2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
3. Hush
4. Summer of 84
5. One Cut of the Dead
6. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)
7. The Pool

I love the Blob remake. I'd honestly put it on par with David Cronenberg's The Fly and John Carpentar's The Thing as far as great horror remakes go. It's sad how underrated that movie is, because it not talked about nearly as much as the first two and that sink scene use to give me nightmares as a kid.

8.Terrifier

Still creeps me the hell out, so i think thats a good thing.XD
I would say im scared of clowns since this and Tim Currys IT are things i cant watch without lights, but i can watch other killer clowns just fine.
So it seems its just those two clowns who freak me out.

This is... not really a horror movie, more of a Fincher-style thriller, despite how Hulu has been pushing it this month. But it does fit the vibe, very spooky atmosphere and some brutal kills. It's good mystery for the most part, and really great lead performances from Cooke and Nighy. It goes so very strong all the way up until the end, with a final twist that undercuts everything that happened before and leaves all of the stories themes hanging in the air, and then goes a step further with a final scene that adds nothing. It should have ended where it began, the opening of the curtain. 3/5

5. Vampires vs. The Bronx (2020)

Netflix's new entry in the "Kids vs. Monsters" genre was a fun enough ride, but not nearly as memorable as it could have been, and fails to live up to its titular premise. The trio of young leads all bring game, likable performances to the table, and Shea Whigham is great as the vampiric familiar, but this really could have benefited from a more distinct directing style to drive home the "sense of place" that powers the movie's themes of gentrification. That and the climax is incredibly disappointing. It's not bad, but similar to The Babysitter, I think it will go down not for its own merits, but as the introduction to a new star or two. 3/5

6. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Maybe it has become over-hyped in the last eight years, but it's still a blast. Yes, the main characters, outside of Marty, are completely forgettable, but that's kind of the point. The scenes in the facility are brilliant, and are what we're all here for. Personally, though, as with the last two films I watched, it kind of falls apart in the final act. In case anyone still hasn't seen it...

I have no problem with Dana and Marty getting inside the facility. That could have made for a really great cat-and-mouse game. But from the minute they hit the "big red button," it jumps the shark. The mere existence of the button is a huge plothole. Then you have the specialized soldiers completely unprepared to deal with the monsters that it is their LITERAL ONLY JOB to contain. Amy Acker gets wasted despite being the only facility member who took their job seriously. And then the ending. It's not BAD, per say, but it's certainly not a twist. It's obvious from fairly early on that the ritual is legit. IMO, the duo surviving in the facility until Acker's character corners them, with Dana killing Marty and then waking up on the side of the road never to know for sure if she did the right thing would have been a much better ending.
3.5/5

7. Hubie Halloween (2020)

This is sadly not Adam Sandler's Oscar Snub Revenge Flick. This is his Lady in the Water. I'm not sure why I watched it. Maybe I was riding on a Sandler high after Uncut Gems. Maybe I wanted to know if it really was his entry for "Worst Movie of All Time." But instead, it's just an hour and forty minutes designed to yell at the audience - "Hey! You should feel bad for hating on Adam Sandler!" And it succeeded in making me hate on him SO HARD again. It's a case study for taking a movie that SHOULD work and making every possible horrible choice to ruin it. This exact plot and cast could have made for a blast of a horror comedy, but instead we get something that is neither scary nor funny.

Noah Schnapp and Paris Berelc are great together, and I wish they were the leads. Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows, Kenan Thompson, Steve Buscemi, June Squibb, heck even Kevin James give great performances with what they've got, but none of it helps, really. Shaq's scene is the only memorable joke, and it immediately overstays its welcome. And then the ending turns into the most over-the-top, out of character, absurd self-congratulatory mess I've ever seen. At least Shymalan had SOME subtlety. Sandler here leaves none.

I'm giving it half a point, but only for the sake of the ensemble that tried to save so hard to save this wreck. .5/5

Speaking of The Cabin in the Woods, I always wondered:
How the heck did they get all those monsters in their cubes in the first place?! Especially considering how murderous they are?

See, that's my main problem with the ending
They clearly had some ability, rather from their own science or from the Ancient Ones, to capture/create/summon these things and control them. But then after the monsters escape, apparently the only way they have to deal with it is the gas that conveniently malfunctions?

After years and years of watching horror films, I realized one key element for me is the atmosphere of them. When a horror film can take you out from where you are physically and can transport you into a place that you can see yourself in, that's when it grabs me. Is really hard to explain. A really well made dark/rainy/isolated/abandoned place with good cinematography just puts me in the right mood.
I'm the same. Creating some spooky unsettling atmosphere or tension goes along way with a genre like horror.
The brand is vampiric. YEERRR

9. Bram Stoker's Dracula

Finally watched the Blu-Ray version i have bought some time ago, before i always gone with the DVD version i have for many years.
Still a timeless movie imo, so good.
It reminded me that i definitly need to get the Book in its original since i only have the German translation for it.
It also reminds me that i really need to get the Christohper Lee Dracula movies, i constantly postpone getting them.

Anyway, the movie holds up really well.

More or less off topic:

Can anybody recomned some youtube channels focusing on halloween, horror in general?
I noticed im way too short on those in my list of youtube channels.
Would also like to know if there are some female youtubers/streamers that mainly go with the topic of Horror or play horror video games.

Watching season 2 premiere of Eli Roth’s History Of Horror. Loving it just as good as last season. Same deal

So I don't usually do a "31 Days of Halloween" horror movie marathon, but here's my running list so far with the first horror movie I've seen this month. Made it out to a local Alamo Drafthouse theater for this one, which is doing their annual "Dismembering the Alamo" October horror movie fest.

1. Pyscho Goreman [2020]

If any of y'all have the opportunity to catch this on a big screen or otherwise, I highly recommend it. Alamo Drafthouse kept the title of this movie under wraps so I had no idea what it was going in, and it legitimately felt like a late 80s / early 90s film because it had a very similar feel to movies of that era with kid protagonists, no modern technology shown in the movie, and if there was any CGI, it wasn't obvious because it was riddled with tons of disgusting practical effects - and I mean, "disgusting" in the sense of showing lots of blood, guts, & gore, all practically. :) The only thing I knew about the movie going in was that it would be a "horror comedy", and it definitely was, with the comedy mostly being tongue-in-cheek. Overall a really entertaining flick, and worth watching for anyone who likes alien monsters, blood & guts all done via practical effects (and in 2020 no less!), and a relative dose of campy humor.

Serious kudos to the filmmakers for pulling off a film in 2020 that I genuinely thought was made in the 80s until I came back home and Google'd the title!

And this movie is definitely and easily destined for cult status. There's absolutely no way it won't be a cult hit!

10. The Fly (1986)

Another one of those recent blu-ray purchases that i havent touched until now.
Visually still so stunning, i like CGI make no mistake...but practical effects and make-up just has this raw feeling that has weight and makes this movie work so damn much.
Super scary and disturbing seeing seths transformation and all.

Annoyingly it always puts this bug in my head about a similar movie i think i once saw...or i just imagine because i havent found the name.
Its similar to the fly with someone mixing his dna or getting bitten by a spider, first seemingly turning into a superhero but then transforming into a human size spider.
But for the love of me i havent found if this even actually existed or if i just imagine such a movie.

Is it perhaps the 2001 version of Earth vs. the Spider?

Oh my god, thats really it...thank you very much.
This was always such an annoying itch because i couldnt find out the name of the movie...earth vs the spider sounds like some 1950s monster movie with a giant spider.XD
No wonder i never found this...thank you so very much.
