The Huntsman: Winter's War

I haven't posted in a while. But I just wanted to add to this thread that...

There is gross inequality in Hollywood where actresses are treated as disposable while men are given infinite chances. For example, Robert Downey Jr. crashes and burns before he ever starred in a mainstream hit due to going to being arrested on multiple occasions for cocaine possession and other assorted crimes, and even serving a prison sentence... he is cast as a superhero and in a mainstream comedy hit. Winona Ryder is caught shoplifting (admittedly a lot), and she is blacklisted for life.

Or on the more salacious side, actors like Hugh Grant, Jude Law, and Brad Pitt can all be caught cheating on their spouses or fiancées without facing repercussions. Meanwhile Kristen Stewart is caught with a cheating man, and she is basically kicked off the A-list.

It is a hideous double standard.

...WITH THAT SAID, I don't actually necessarily believe this is just a simple case of moving the focus to the male lead from the first film. While he is in the title, I suspect that s more for branding purposes. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Jessica Chastain is as much a protagonist as Hemsworth (or Stewart). They also added Blunt, and I expect Charlize Theron will have an even bigger role than in the first one, because she was honestly the only good thing in that movie and everyone knows it. Hence why they bent over backwards to bring her character back from the dead.

So, in short, despite whatever unfair politics that precipitated this, Kristen Stewart was always miscast as Snow White and was quite weak in that film (and I write this as someone who has enjoyed several of her films in the last year). She has been replaced by Jessica Chastain--a MUCH better actress--and instead of bringing back one of the first film's genuine creative problems (Stewart), they brought back its greatest strength (Theron) and are adding Blunt to top it off as a new villain.

I actually think this seems like a good thing overall. Hemsworth is the token now of Marvel's formula.

Love Hemsworth but yeah, the Thor movies just plain suck.

Maybe one day the MCU will make me give a damn about Thor. Fifth time's the charm. :o

Yeah, I hadn't read those specific cases but I know that with cops there is an ugly old boys network frame of mind in play at various precincts/stations that needs eradicating. It often comes across like men who want their adult tree house to themselves.

I know and I am with you on that, it is important that at a young age we teach young boys not to see girls as secondary and for young girls to feel they have the freedom to be what they wish, and likewise to remove stigmas from certain things for young boys as well where they are told stupid stuff like "it's not manly" to like something like dancing for instance.

I also don't want you to feel like I am attacking something you love. I know it can get like that, when sometimes it feels like movies I grew up with and still love are now being told that they aren't okay. Because I think we grew up liking a lot of the same things, even if you are an old man and I ain't quite yet. :woot:

You may very well be right on this subject, but part of me of me is always going to wonder. But your argument is more then sound.

Sawyer just needs me alive long enough for the Gaston pics to come out and he can legitimately bomb the BatB thread. :o

I still say the first movie was a good origin for both Thor and Loki. A little rushed with Thor's transition, but I still really enjoy it. Just wish they didn't waste the Warriors Three and Sif. :csad:
It wasn't until Jack Ryan that I noticed Keira's under-bite.
And...

When I see him rip open that shirt, the entire country will simultaneously feel my response.

Chastain looks like Gemma Arterton from Hansel & Gretel Witch Hunters.

I wasn't really excited about this until when I read the new synopsis and saw the new posters today.

Now I'm very excited and can't wait to see the trailer.

I hope that when Chastain's character walks onscreen, they start playing:

Shooting at the walls of heartache
Bang, bang, I am the warrior
Well, I am the warrior
And heart to heart you'll win
If you survive the warrior, the warrior

I wonder if this movie will be more like a Thor comic than the actual Thor movies. :o

As for the title, it's like Hemsworth couldn't be in Captain America 2 or Captain America 3, so he just decided he'd combine them and have his own movie: Winter's War.

Up next: The Huntsman: Civil Soldier. :o

Emily Blunt as evil Elsa, riding into battle on the back of a polar bear. Ok, that's just awesome. And it looks like Thor is getting himself some Chastain lovin already. ;)

Looks better than Warcraft, at least.

Well another thing that I'll give the first movie was that, it looked pretty. The visuals were really good and, actually rather Miyazaki-esque in some places.

Yes, the variety of what is considered attractive in Hollywood is a much broader spectrum of shapes and sizes when it comes to actors, no question about that.

In fairness men are thought of first in those roles because there is a much greater percentile in these jobs in society, and while we are seeing more and more action roles for women in TV than in cinema they often are in a fantasy arena, but given that is the arena where the bulk of the money is these days then it's a strong start.

The 3rd paragraph is a mixture of stuff, as far as her missing out on the sequel, well both are so that seems fair if the studio wanted to distance themselves, but your point about whether she'll get another franchise opportunity while he has is a fair one, however I would say that I think there might well be more to it than that, Stewart is not ideal to build a franchise on as she's hopeless at promotion most of the time and I suspect over time she'd probably lean more towards the indie films anyway. However as far as issues with treatment go there certainly needs to be changes made, especially as regards to actresses age, Maggie Gyllenhaal's story was the tip of the ice berg and hopefully will lead to some sort of proactive measures taking place.

I thought Darth summed it up better than me and I see you already answered to his so in turn, you answered me. But yes, it has to do with gender roles and it's what we learn from early childhood that's implanted into our minds. For some reason it's okay for girls to play with action figures or be Woody for Halloween yet for boys if they pretend to be Elsa in Frozen they'll be ridiculed and looked down upon by their friends and at worst, their parents or just father.

I think at worst Stewart is just very awkward in interviews and just has views and opinions that doesn't mesh well with the Hollywood machine. Now despite us not always agreeing with her, this shouldn't be a factor in her losing out a franchise. If she prefers to do indie films and it was her choice to leave and say **** it, then that's fine and it's a whole other thing seeing as it was her choice and it wasn't by external forces.

But why is that? It is the establishment of gender roles. Women weren't even allowed to be cops in most Western nations until the 20th century, and this before we get into the massive amount of sexism in that workplace.

This actually reminds me of the conversation about the doing away of girl and boy sections at Target. Stuff we teach kids, with film, with their toys, etc. We put kids in boxes early and it matters. It matters a lot.

This was great. If we all really think back in our childhood's it's the little things like this that I was talking about that effects are perception of these things. Society telling children that stuff like this make it seem like it's okay and how things are when these are just concepts with no basis. And people who overwhelmingly created these concepts were men in charge.

I like the Princess Diaries film. Now it's hard for me to talk about that in public because I'll probably get laughed at. Why is that? Because boys at a certain age are taught that those types of things are for girls and in turn you compute it to be somehow wrong, right when the age when you can discern right from wrong. These things take a huge toll and they form our perceptions to believe that there's nothing wrong with this.

I bet the people behind this movie are glad that the GODS OF EGYPT trailer also dropped this week, because as mediocre as this looks, at least it doesn't look THAT bad.

Looking pretty fun. Chastain looks ridiculous in that poster to me but the others are looking good.

Her actual look looks good, but that pose is, awkward. It'd be much better if they'd just had her looking straight ahead, instead of this weird "half-turned, half-not" thing.

It's the warrior pose with the pouty baby look that's making me laugh.
