What you don't think Star Trek 2 is going to make some serious coinage? Jesus.

Not overseas. The first film grossed about 128 mill OS. It will definitely increase from that but not enough to do damage to IM3. Star Trek has never been big abroad

I don't know, Spider-man is just a juggernaut around the world that goes way beyond hollywood. I don't think you can be so quick to label Iron Man as Marvel's new mascot just yet....even if TASM was the lowest grossing Spidey film.

$18m OW in South Korea!! Holy crap, this movie is huge!

In the movie verse I guess it will be safe to say Iron Man is the biggest A-lister for Marvel if it can manage to make 350+ m domestic and 900+ m WW.

But comic book and pop culture wise Spidey will always be Marvels flagship character.

Yeah pretty much. I don't see Cap or Thor ever making near the amount that IM3 will gross.

It's amazing ASM made as much as it did with the stigma associated with reboot. How much will a rebooted IM movie make sans Downey, I'm betting not 760m.

It looks like my prediction for IM3 may be a conservative one...Great to see these early numbers.

I'd bet a new Iron Man reboot would make more simply because its under the Marvel Studios umbrella. The optics would most likely be different. As you know, people made the Sony reboot appear as the hostile takeover of Monsieur Raimi. If identical films were made at Disney, Sony, and Fox, the Disney/MS film would be the most liked somehow...:cwink:

Imagine if
the Killian is The Mandarin twist were done at Sony or FOX (especially FOX).
It would be different.

It's very simple....half the world has not seen Iron Man 3...if you do not put spoilers about important things in the movie in spoiler tags...you will be infracted and put on probation. Do not ruin the movie for others.

Definitely not, when i think of actual worldwide recognizable marvel icons, Iron man barely cracks the top 5. Spider-man is easily on top of that list. It would be interesting to see how much money an Avengers film without Downey Jr would make.

There's no thread about this, and a search has turned up nada within the forums. Does anyone know when tix's will go on sale in Canada on the interwebs? I'd like to pre-purchase my tickets using ULTRA AVX and pick the best seats in the house for the midnight showing.

I just can't seem to find anything out there with an answer and Cineplex in Canada has failed to be of any help.

Over on the Boxoffice.com forums I read that Disney is having the same monetary dispute with the largest Canadian theater chain(s) that it had in the US. The two sides haven't resolved it yet, so that is why advance tickets to IM3 aren't available for some Canadian theaters.

I know recasting Iron Man is inevitable but I'm hoping we'll see RDJ in Iron Man 4, Avengers 2 and Avengers 3 (basically until phase 3 is over).

By then everyone will be ready for a change.

Boxofficemojo.com' Summer 2013 Forecast predicts that Iron Man 3 will gross $1 billion worldwide: $400 million domestic and $600 million OS.

1. Iron Man 3 (May 3): When the second entry in a franchise is poorly received—as was the case with Iron Man 2—that typically indicates that the third movie will see a decline in domestic box office. Iron Man 3 should be able to buck this trend, though, since it's technically a follow-up to last May's universally loved (and incredibly successful) superhero team-up The Avengers. While Iron Man 3 won't match The Avengers's $623.4 million, it should be the highest-grossing entry in the Iron Man franchise thanks to its great release date, strong early word-of-mouth, and goodwill from The Avengers. (Domestic: $400 million, Foreign: $600 million)

BOM's prediction for MOS is $650 million ($290M/$360M).

I expect 320/420 m (domestic/overseas) for MOS for now. Almost 100 m over box office mojo's WW estimate.

I'm not so sure that this is true for the general audience any longer. Iron Man was once relatively unknown, but now he is an iconic superhero who is instantly recognizable to a vast number of people. If/when Iron Man 3 grosses more than a billion dollars worldwide, an argument could be made that he has outstripped all of Marvel's other characters except Spider-Man in popularity. Following the success of The Avengers, every one of those characters has jumped in popularity so who knows how they all stack up now. Thor, with 12 million hits to his trailer on YouTube alone, has to be considered a major player now.

Lets see an Iron Man movie without RDJ then we'll talk about whether IM is now the flagship character.

Fixed. That's a better term, these characters go beyond movies and kids, some of these characters have had far larger exposure to far more people in a much longer time. Spider-man has enjoyed that for decades now, same goes with the hulk. Iron Man has only truly been popular for the past 5 years, and arguably that's mostly for a certain generation. I'd likely get more response with Spider-man or hulk with someone over 50 or someone from another country (for example, spider-man is HUGE in asian territories) it's to do with all sorts of things, tv shows, comics, merch, history etc.

Not saying Tony Stark isn't in the top 3-4, but he's certainly not spider-man level, not by a long shot.

You got one thing right in your post: The bulk of the fan base of Spider-Man and the Hulk is comprised of older fans who read the comic books and/or saw the cartoons and Hulk TV show when young. Spider-Man retains his popularity with kids through cartoons and merchandise, of course, but Hulk has not been as fortunate and has dwindled in stature over time. Now, however, the heroes of Marvel Studios are in the ascendant and they will only continue to gain in popularity for the foreseeable future. There really isn't any rational way to deny that Iron Man has now equaled or surpassed Hulk and Wolverine in popularity.

When Iron Man has a float in the New Year's Day parade then we can call him Marvel's flagship.

I heard they were going to have a drunk Tony Stark float at this years parade.

Spider Man's fans are almost all little kids. Iron Man appeals to the adults. I don't know a single adult that thinks Spidey is cooler than Stark.
