Oh god, i forgot that travesty of a 2nd film actually made 600 plus WW. That RDJ is box office gold...didn't the first Sherlock holmes film get 500m WW?

Yup and Sherlock held it's own against the Avatar wave ending up with $209m US domestic, which solidified RDJ's box office draw outside of Iron Man. All he needs now is an Oscar (which i thought he should've gotten in Tropic Thunder had he not been in competition with Heath Ledger's Joker).

I don't understand bragging rights over BO numbers (unless you are getting a cut) wouldn't overall critical consensus be better to brag about (albeit only a little less pointless). Wouldn't this mean Bayformers fans have more to brag about? Or Harry Potter fans?

Oscars mean crap all, Ledger deserved his Oscar but he still won purely because he died...it's all politics and backstage tomfoolery. RDJ doesn't need it when he's a proven box office behemoth.

None of it is worth bragging about. It is only important when it comes to making sequels or other similar films. But all that matters in the end is your own personal enjoyment. At least I hope so.

Agreed. I'll never fail to take a swipe at those @#%@%ing movies.:oldrazz:

Well, I guess there are even people who don't like Goodfellas or Raging Bull. :woot:

Because critical anything is just opinion. Box office #'s are as close to facts as you get in this competition. Why not ask why sports fans care about scores?

That is a bizarre way of looking at art. The sports comparison by itself is quite flawed. Bill Russell has more rings. Better then Jordan. :D

Man, Marvel is really killing the BO. Phase II started with a bang!

Ah, but it ain't just art. It's entertainment and commerce as well. If we were just talking about oh, say...paintings then I'd agree. I never saw any museums get into an argument over whether a DaVinci or a Rembrandt pulled in more customers.

And as a total non-sports guy I have no idea about who Bill Russell or Jordan are or what these rings are for. But I do know sports fans are competitive with each other over different teams and such. It's similar here.

That should be all that matters.

Because what exactly does box office numbers tell you about a movie quality wise? Did we miss the fact that Bay's Transformers movies have made near to 2 billion (and it's likely the 4th will add another billion to that) would that mean it's a better franchise than Iron Man? Or is it only a selective bragging right when it comes to two franchises that have almost identical audiences, because even then it makes no sense.

Absolutely nothing. I'm well on record around here that I think Nolan's Batman movies suck but they made bank, no doubt about it. Same with Twilight and Transformers and Pirates of the Carribean movies. I think they all suck. And they all made lots of $.

But that doesn't mean it ain't sweet when a movie you DO like/love makes it big. Otherwise why even bother following the box office at all? Just like fans of a sports team don't get anything when their team wins the championship, neither do we get a cut of the box office when a film we like does well. But that's not going to stop us from enjoying that fact anyway.

This is something I'll sign under. None of these things say anything about quality as it relates to your own opinion, although it's of course nice if something you like and want to see more of makes good money.

As Thor is my favorite hero that exists in the MCU I'm happy that it did well and that The Avengers did even better since I think the extra budget and effort really shows in the new trailer.

Yes but we aren't talking about following the box office, it's about comparing them. Like all those fools who actually thought it bragworthy that the Avengers making more money than TDKR meant something. What was bragworthy is that it made 1.5 billion...fullstop. It's like saying Avengers made 1.1 billion more than Django Unchained and that is quantifiable proof that it's a better film?

Anyway I digress...IM3 making money isn't all that important to me other than some of that love getting onto Shane Black they way it's deservedly gotten onto Joss Whedon (who also was getting way too much crap from people for way too long). Because even if this film made 600m WW we would still be getting Avengers 2 and likely IM4.

The MoS box office...now that is something to root for.

Yeah that's the important ones to watch for...the first installment box office numbers, gotta have that sequel. :funny: It still saddens me that no one went to watch Dredd.

The human race loves superheroes. The human race loves RDJ. Marvel is really good at adapting their properties to the screen.

I can do this too. The sky is blue. Water is wet. Too many beans give you gas. 1+1=2.

Nah, just messing with ya.:woot:

I agree.

Same here. When Thor did well and the Avengers killed it, it made me quite happy just because it meant more films, more chances with the creative and the budget bump.
