Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Not following “anything” from the comics is a bummer but I’m still excited

Well… according to reports, the action takes place in Gotham City and both Thomas and Bruce Wayne appear in the story. So not literally “not following anything.” :word:

So that description that someone took an unrelated story and slapped a Joker costume on it is true? Not terribly unexpected.

I’d imagine Phillips probably wanted to tell this kind of story, and just made it The Joker... and WB went for it.

"But maybe it's still tied to what Reeves is doing." - DCU Reddit

Are people really saying this? The leaked plot is all over Reddit... and even those that haven’t read it, how could they possibly think this was connected at this stage?

I mean... No duh it's not gonna follow any comics and be its own story, lol.

All I care about is staying true to the overall spirit of the character.

I think given the breadth of material written for the character over the years, that there's almost no chance it doesn't bear some resemblance to some element of the character as depicted in a specific comic. They're obviously not following one storyline, and making up a few things whole cloth, which is fine.

Overall, I think I prefer his look in the subway and in the phonebooth (no red nose, smile with the black outline). He looks significantly creepier to me there than he does with the final Joker look - even though the differences aren't that drastic.

The only way it could be connected is if it is retroactively (or during the film) said that this is one of many origin stories for the Joker and that his past truly is multiple choice. So in that instance, Joker’s backstory in his head is that he was a stand up comic or whatever in 80s Gotham, waging a campaign against the rich/corrupt in Gotham

There's a thematic reason why his final look has those differences

All these tangible sets... It's so refreshing to see a comic book movie without green screen and CGI.

Literally every bit of info we've gotten has pointed to this movie being its own take on the origin (which consistently varies as it is). Did we really need Todd Phillips to put it into words for us?

These articles are always full of "duhh" things and marketing blurbs.

I never expected this to follow anything from the comics ever since it was known Thomas Wayne was going to play a role in the movie and Joker is the only comic book character I know that lends himself well to this kind of story telling where you can go "off brand" sort of speak and I suspect is the reason Phoenix took the role.

and those pics are just beyond great can't wait for this it's my #1 movie left for this year

Why are some people angry that this is it's own thing? Does a comic book movie need to follow a previous comic arc or have a lot of easter eggs or be related to another movie to be good? Comics always do this things: they create new arcs, new stories, new origins and even change some characters and their genre (Born Again, Year One, TDKR). So why can't a movie do the same thing? I can't believe how many people got triggered in so many CBM websites.

I think being its own thing is fine, but the fact that Phillips is already playing defense with this movie concerns me a little.

Really loving these interviews so far. its surreal to have De Niro in one of these films and I think we all should be really grateful haha

I don't think that's a bad thing. He isn't acting arrogant like Rian Johnson or other directors. He is just stating a fact. People are gonna hate this. God, some people already hate it. Just look at CBM, at Twitter, 4chan.
