Joker "The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached? - Part 2

Not there because Kick Ass was about a very niche character. And Hit Girl did generate some controversy anyway, from what I remember.

But... central point here: if you take the main villain from the most popular comic book character in the world, and a character of huge popularity in his own right - and position him as a domestic terrorist, with ‘incel’ like tendencies... expect controversy, given today’s rather febrile environment.

I dont know if its necessary because its the joker...a incredible large part of the movie simply is looking like it puts the viewer into the viewpoint where a "incel" is felt sorry for and where that guy turning to violence is justified.
They put this movie into a incredible grounded univeres and then tell the sotry of a guy who is socially awkward and missunderstood, where society and its people are painted as being the bad guys and where him turning towards violence against this...with others who feel like him, is shown as a liberating feeling(at least according to the trailers)

That in a day and age where exactly this kind of people cause so much harm and pain, where incels excuse their ****ty behaviour with "society and people are wrong"...that is bound to be a problem.

And the movie doesnt try to overdraw anything, it stays as realistic and grounded as possible...which is just making it worse.
If you would put this all in a world like in john wick, kickass or so...it would be less problematic i think.

Although this film might be considered an instant classic, I'd prefer it to stay as a one off. I don't want to see this Joker become more and more of his comic book counterpart--that should be left to the audience's imagination.

You’re absolutely right to suggest that this film would probably courting someone controversy, even if it wasn’t about The Joker, given its subject matter, tone, and commentary on current real life issues... but the fact it is about The Joker has surely increased the volume on the controversy.

Two ways of looking at this are either... they shouldn’t have made this a movie about such a popular, mainstream character, because the controversy and reaction is huge... or, they should have made it about such a popular, mainstream character... for precisely the same reasons!

Here's my main issue and the question I am asking is what did people expect from a movie about the Joker. It seems like people were expecting something like Deadpool.

Maybe... I don't know, watch the movie first before coming to any real conclusion regarding any "problematic themes" the movie might have?

Just because Arthur has a sympathetic backstory doesn't mean it will justify his actions later on. That and, media doesn't breed violence. People do.

Or maybe the trailers and those who worked on the movie could do better work in telling people that those concerns will be adressed in the first place instead of letting people guess?

They have. Todd Phillips addressed those concerns, and so have Warner Brothers. I don't know what else you want, really.

I know some of you guys may disagree, but i'm 80% sure this will get a Best Pic nom. Controversial and dark films had been nominated in the past (Clockwork Orange, Silence of the Lambs, No Country for Old Men, Django Unchained, etc). And even some guys that disliked the film, like this one

...think it may get a nom. I know Oscars aren't really important anymore, but would be nice to see all the bloggers lose their **** IF it happens. Just for that i would like it to happen. The people that love this film LOVE it.

Yeah I think Joker will get a nom, but I think fellow De Niro crime film The Irishman is going for the win (or at least I hope so). Sounds like one of Marty's best films yet, a real shame he only has one Oscar.

Don't be so sure. What i learned last year with Green Book's win, is that anything can happen with Oscars. My bet right now is for OUATIH.

I'd be good with that, that's my favorite of the year so far along with Ad Astra and The Farewell, but I'd be so happy to see Marty take his second trophy home.

Imagine him fighting Batman... oh man, I don't want to get excited but a film like this one, same realistic horror style, with Batsy, similar to Joker from Brian Azzarello... oh god.
How would that work though with Matt Reeves Batman? I mean, it'd be awesome, but

I think they may do a sequel for Joker, but waaaay down the road. Like, 10-15 years from now so he can age with the character to fight Batman and not have 2 separate Batmen on screen at the same time
