Days of Future Past The Josh Helman Thread - THE YOUNGEST WILLIAM STRYKER YET!

No smart people just won't understand and write sh.. about Singer.
Quicksilver was always in Singer's plan to use this character in movie. Singer had him in script for FC, but Vaughn move back action to 60's and Pietro was cut out. Now when Singer is director, he changed Vaughn/Kinberg plans about DOFP, moves forward action to 70's and uses Quicksilver instead Juggernaut. Singer's script to DOFP was done before Disney said there will be Quicksilver in next Avengers movie.

woah woah hey so you are saying during the story scripting process bryan singer wasn't going to have first class set in the 60s then vaughn came aboard and made it so?

i am pretty singer was behind it being in the 60s, he was behind story, design and casting and he was also behind the blue and yellow costumes that he felt were fine to use because it was the 60s

No, Singer didn't want it in 60's, he wanted to use Sunpot and Quciksilver in First Class.
Agree about costumes, but 70's.

where is the source for this information? i have never read anything that suggest singer had different ideas about the setting? Unless you are saying it because he wanted to use quicksilver and sunspot? but that says nothing in this franchise

Singer said this in 2011

IGN: Why did you decide to set your story against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis?

Singer: I was bouncing around in my mind what time period would Xavier and Magneto be in their mid-20s. Because that's how I'd want to see them, so I started doing the math in my head taking into account the age of Patrick and Ian and when X-Men loosely took place in my mind so I back-tracked to the early '60s and thought about what was happening then, and you've got the Civil Rights movement, which is fantastic, and the birth of the X-Men comic book, which is interesting and ironic, and lastly the Cold War and the Cuban Missile Crisis being at the centre of it. So suddenly I was struck by the idea that this movie that takes place in the past has to be at a time when no one knows that these mutants exist. So the fun is that on the surface there is this conflict happening between Russia and the United States, the building nuclear threat with the Cold War nearer developing into a nuclear war, and under the surface there is this whole other war brewing that no one really knows about. That intrigued me and I thought it would be really exciting to have those two things happening parallel to each other.

Quicksilver was never in First Class. Fox originally wanted a young X-Men movie with the team being the group of mutants at the end of Origins. Singer is the one who wanted it set in the 60s and focus and Charles and Erik with the blue and yellow costumes.

Singer has been wanting to use Quicksilver for quite some time.As he said back In 2011 he would liked to have used him for FC but couldn't.

PreSinger FC would have been set with Cyclops,Jean,Storm,Beast, and others as students. It was Singer who turned it into the Xavier and Magneto backstory film set In early 1960's.
Vaughn made it more of a Magneto origin film.

Vaughn made magneto more James Bond like but the script had parts of the magneto origin script thrown in so I don't think that was Vaughn's idea to make I'm him the focus

There were some rumblings Singer had it a bit more equal between Xavier and Magneto and Vaughn made it a bit more Magneto centric. The script got totally rewritten once Vaughn took over so hard to know exactly how it was entirely In the drafts written when Singer was going to direct.

Good thing, they cut Juggernaut. It would possibly leave to questions and continuity erros.

quite a big interview with helman on DOFP

some highlights being..

  • He is mostly known as bill stryker in his early years
  • There’s allusions to the stuff with his son from X2 but he doesn't wanna say to much as its it’s early in the process.
  • Josh thinks its possible he could return for another movie
  • Even though he doesn't have a scene with quicksilver he hears the stuff with quicksilver is mean't to be pretty special
  • they didn't use juggernaut because They decide to go in a different direction

This kind of casts doudt on the Wolverine kills Stryker speculation

Its smart how it worked out with the first film focusing more on Magneto. Magneto has a more aggressive story, more immediate. Xavier is now in a messed up place and needs to hit bottom before he rises up. So its his turn now.

And then it will focus on wolverine in the next film heh heh hehhhhhh.

That's bad I hope Stryker will die. Don't want him in Apocalypse, maybe in Wolverine 3 if it's in 80's.

Whatever happens to Stryker in the movie, I hope this is his last movie.

Helman might just be saying all that about being open to coming back. Actors do it all the time rather than giving away their character's fate in the film.

Edi Gathegi also said he would be open to coming back as Darwin! :word:

it seems helman feels it has hints to being a setup for something, whether there isn't and its just a origin to the X2 character or a set up for something else, i won't include origins because its hard to believe its the same character but who knows

i suppose out of anyone he probably would know if there was a door open there seeing as he is playing the character

I wouldn't mind moving on from the Stryker family, especially if the next movie focuses on Apocalypse.

If his "Bill" is interesting in this movie, I actually wouldn't mind seeing him in Apocalypse again. The thing is that "Bill" doesn't feel anywhere near the William Stryker from X2 yet (and luckily nothing like the one from origins either), so there is a lot of room for character development. ;)

Hmm I would prefer to see new characters than to spend time on Stryker again.

Okay because I have no life I decided to research Stryker's military insignia/medals/etc. I'm just a layperson working from pics and footage, so I could be off on some of these (I don't think I am though):

- Infantry branch insignia
- Combat Infantryman Badge
- Master Parachutist Badge
- 101st Airborne Division Insignia (right arm)
- US Army Special Forces Insignia (left arm)
- Silver Star
- Purple Heart
- Meritorious Service Medal
- National Defense Service Medal
- Vietnam Service Medal
- Vietnam Campaign Medal
- Presidential Unit Citation
- I *think* he's a Major
- I assume his green beret also indicates special forces but I don't think the insignia on his hat corresponds with any actual group insignia.
- He also has devices on some of his medals, but they're hard to see, so I'm not going to openly speculate.

So, he's a part of Special Forces, he's good at jumping out of airplanes, and he served in Vietnam. I feel like the costume department will have given me more headcanon than the movie will have time to do.

My problem is that we already met Stryker in 1975 (Origins), 2 years after, and he didn't look so young......

People have had a problem with the age thing from the start but IMO if you crunch the numbers and take into consideration the fact that Origins took place over a long period of time, it's not so bad. I mean, yeah, they could have gone younger than Danny Huston for Origins but I just read him as being more reflective of Stryker's true age near the end of the movie. I dug out an old post I did of age estimates and it's not too bad if you just pretend Danny Huston is playing a guy much younger than himself in the earlier parts of Origins:
- Brian Cox - born 1946 - 57 at the time of X2's release in 03 (altho the Empire timeline now has it set in 06; assuming his Stryker was the same age that would place his birth at 1949).

- Danny Huston - born 1962 - 47 at the time of Origins release. His appearance in that timeline is from 1975-87. I'd say that makes his Stryker seem older than Cox's, but to be fair he was playing him over a wider period of time. (Cox was 29 in 1975 and 41 in 1987). If we assume Stryker is 47 in 1975 that would place his birth in 1928; if we assume he's 47 in 1987 it would be 1940 -- something a lot closer to Cox's Stryker.

- Josh Helman - born 1986 - he just turned 28. DoFP is set in 1973, so his Stryker could be estimated as being born in 1945. Pretty close to when Brian Cox's Stryker could be estimated to have been born.

TL;DR: we don't know, but I'd estimate William Stryker was born about 1940-1949 (with the likelihood if it being closer to 1945).
IMO it's not as terrible as everyone seems to think.
