The Kennedy Thread

I just wonder if Teddy would have become president had it not been for that accident. Could you imagine how differently things could have been?

I think that if it weren't for the accident he would have easily beaten Jimmy Carter in the primaries and become President.

One accident doesnt define one s life imo; I could find something in ANYONES life and, if I were to use it as my sole piece of evidence to judge them on, endlessly discredit them for all time.

Spouting nonsense like "Anybody who who thinks he was a good guy (or whatever) is ignoring Mary Jo Keponeche" is just ******ed. It was an accident and people change anywyas.

Yes it is, because I don't see him as some liberal demon. I see him as a man first and foremost, who held liberal ideologies. And like most men, I think that he held a lot of guilt inside for what he did. And a lot of shame as well for what his actions did to not only himself but the entire Kennedy clan and his office. He was also never able to put it behind him because well a lot of people bring it up to this day and the incident severely limited his political career. That was enough punishment for him if you ask me, something that no rich boy prison could have properly done for him.

And his service to not only to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, but to everyone in the United States of America, was his atonement.

But I can understand that some don't see it that way, there are some who don't look into the goodness of people's hearts and think that Teddy did not feel guilt over what happened and he didn't do enough to atone for his sin. But bringing up Laura Bush because someone cannot stand a liberal icon be berated, so they have to bring up someone from the opposing political ideology to feel validated is just low. Especially since while I am speculating on Teddy's feelings towards the incident, Laura has been known to still carry the guilt for the person she accidentally killed and rarely talks about it because of her feelings towards it.

I just sick of people who want to reduce his life story to one stupid and tragic event 40 years ago.

Nothing against Ted but that family of that person was robbed of so many things for one act of stupidity. Do we need to relive it by remembering it...no. But, lets be fair to that family as well. I am sure Ted was sorry with what happened and I am sure he helped out a lot over the years with that family. I wouldn't even be surprised if he kept in touch with them but I really don't know. He just seemed like that kind of guy that would keep in touch and send a card or gifts.

Same could be said of many families that lose loved ones due to acts of stupidity...that doesn't translate into malice which some people (not anyone I've seen on here) seem to think.

What are you talking about? I am sure Ted relived that moment over and over again so we don't need to remember it. But, we need to remember the family of the victim. Ted has now passed so that closes that chapter all together imo.

This is not about Ted, but a question....

The media...and the public are completely enamored and in love with the Kennedy family...for whatever reason.

Now...

Ted has passed.
I BELIEVE and I said this moments after I found Ted has passed, which Kennedy is now the one the media and politicians as a whole, will try to get pushed into politics.

Let the rat race begin.

Who will try to either...take his spot, or jump into the 2010 election.

His ability and desire to work across the aisle is something that alot of people could learn from.

I agree, but the reality of it is......he was just a damn good negotiator. He had no intention of bringing in ANYTHING that a Republican wanted unless he gained from it. In other words, if it got 80% of his bill passed, then he would compromise on 20% of the part that was the least evasive to the policy he wanted passed. It was called bi-partisanship, but in reality he could "steal your shorts, and leave you smiling".

The only one who it would seem logical to chose would Caroline; aside from the original 9 Kennedys from Joe and Fitz, the only children the public ever cared about where JFKS and Jr's gone. If he were alive, it would be hoim, no doubt about it.

Or...maybe the Kennedy dynasty has officially run its course.

Compromise is also something that those in Washington need to learn.

I definitely think Caroline, Patrick, and Ted Jr. are good possibles.

There are enough capable Kennedy's, I'm sure someone will step up.

UPDATE #4: All four ex-presidents will be attending the Kennedy funeral

I think there's a lot of good will towards the Kennedy's because they, as a family, seem to have payed quite the price for public service.

****, I couldn't imagine losing my only brother. Having one killed in a war, and two get assasinated...I can't even imagine.

So, I think part of the good will towards the Kennedy's is because of all the tragic events that seemed to have unfolded infront of the public.

Caroline sunk her boat during the New York Congressional business.

She got steam rolled like hell by New York.

Patterson seemed to have been a prick throughout it all, as well.

Ok that's nothing, Rush Limbaugh has been bragging about how he was right that 'Kennedy wouldn't live to see the fate of healthcare reform'.

Okay, I read the link that Matt provided.

I still don't see why he called him a murderer.

Sorry, to bring this up. But...it just seems, from what I was reading, like a cheap shot is all. Unless I'm missing something?

Again, this is the first time I've heard about it until...yesterday, I guess.

You can debate the language of "murderer" or "manslaughter" all you want - but Kennedy's actions were cowardly, vile and indefensible.
