The Kennedy Thread

http://www.newsweek.com/id/213702/page/3
When President Nixon proposed a plan for universal coverage that would have delighted Democrats in later years, Kennedy, who long backed a government plan, led the opposition, a move he later regretted. So he moved to partial reforms, but even here he was often disappointed. His hopes of a major restructuring were dashed in the early 1990s with the defeat of Bill and Hillary Clinton's health-care initiative.

Caroline Kennedy is far more intelligent than Sarah Palin. That being said, I don't think Caroline was treated very fairly. Sarah Palin largely brought her situation onto herself.

I just sick of people who want to reduce his life story to one stupid and tragic event 40 years ago.

But the thing is that it is a major part of his life story, not a single stupid and tragic event. If it didn't happen, the United States itself would have been a very different place. In my opinion it's one of the biggest What If's in American history.

Ted Kennedy would have been president if that event didn't happen.

In my opinion.

I'm starting to think that you cannot answer anything in here without slamming a republican.

Oh want to hear me slam on some Dems?
I have issues with a bunch of them too.
Even Obama.

I think the proposed bill should be the Wiener bill. H.R. 676

I also think Obama should just say ^%$ the bipartisanship and shove the Wiener bill down their throat.

They do that and Obama's numbers will come back up.

Yes the right will cry and scream and wave their guns.

But they'll get over it.
Or die mad.

But if you want me to rail on Obama start talking about lack of transparency. Or not going after Bush for the crap they pulled.

It really does make you wonder how differently things would have turned out.

Ted Kennedy would have been president if that event didn't happen.

In my opinion.

I agree.

You think it should be called the Weiner bill... because Congressman Weiner is a sponsor of it. That's not really slamming the bill, when you use a sponsor's actual name.

Senator Crap-o has put his name on a lot of bills. I don't know if he or any Republican would take offense to calling a bill the Crap-o bill.

I'll have to remember that. :oldrazz:

In my opinion.

I agree. Maybe not in 72, but very likely in 76. It just shows how important personal discipline and living clean is, especially if you are in a position of great importance.

In before all the weiner jokes start.

The bigger what if would have been if Jeb Bush hadn't been the gov of Fla in 2000.

Caroline Kennedy pissed me off. I'm sorry but I don't want another New York City resident to take yet another position (considering that they have all the other major positions of power in New York State). Especially since, while I don't agree with her politically, Hillary Clinton did a great job representing Upstate New York.

If there's one thing I'll thank Paterson for, is that he respects the status quo of having one Downstate Senator and one Upstate Senator with his choice of Kirsten Gillibrand.

I also didn't like Caroline's sense of entitlement just because she was a Kennedy.

Don't get me started on Bush/Gore 2000.

That is not a bigger what if though. Had Ted Kennedy become president who is to say that we would have had a Reagan, Bush, or Clinton. The timeline could have been completely altered.

Yeah... it's so strange Republicans can be friends with Democrats. Such a shocking development.

Okay, I read the link that Matt provided.
I still don't see why he called him a murderer.

Sorry, to bring this up. But...it just seems, from what I was reading, like a cheap shot is all. Unless I'm missing something?

Again, this is the first time I've heard about it until...yesterday, I guess.

Woman Guilty Of Murdering Man In Windshield Death
http://www.wftv.com/news/2295744/detail.html

There isn't much difference between the two circumstances. There actions caused the death of others and they left the scene of the crime while leaving the victims to die. The only difference is that one is a Kennedy.

Kennedy's story
Kennedy did not report the accident before the body was found and later gave a statement to police saying that on the previous night he had taken a wrong turn and accidentally driven his car off a bridge into the water.

Woman's story

Testimony indicated Mallard struck the man as he walked along a road, then drove home and parked in her garage -- leaving Biggs in the windshield.

The only problem with that comparison is the woman was in the car with Kennedy, and the two were involved in a pretty frightening, nerve-racking incident. Where the car went into a bay and the two both could have lost their lives.

It wasn't the same as a hit and run. Not even in the same league.

I just wonder if Teddy would have become president had it not been for that accident. Could you imagine how differently things could have been?

I think about that aswell.

that wasn't the strange part. he had a lot of old friends across the aisle.

The strange part was the idea he'd write and perform a song for him.

At least to me it seemed a little strange. Can't say that I've seen that before.

Good on him. To risk a little backlash from partisan constituents.

do you live in upstate New York?

The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of laissez-faire, unbridled competition. They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the umbrella of federal regulations.
