The Kennedy Thread

Any word on why? The only reason I can think of for such a faux pas is that maybe the senior Bush isn't doing too great himself or Barbara. Any speculation?

I would assume it is because of Barbara, she just had major heart surgery......so that would definitely be my guess.

That was in March. I know she is not a spring chicken but 6 months is more than enough time for her to recover for something as simple as a funeral, isn't it?

I haven't seen any official reason for him not going, but I would imagine its due to his or Barbara's health.

Not for full on open heart surgery.....no way, that usually takes a couple of years to fully recover at her age.....IF she actually fully recovers. She wouldn't be allowed to fly yet. And hell, he couldn't even make through the press conference after the surgery without breaking down and hugging the doctors...lol

He worships the ground she stands on.....I can totally see him not going because she can't be by his side........

ALSO, his hip could be really causing him problems right now.....and a long flight might not be something he can handle.

Never-the-less, Bush Sr. went to Pope John Paul II's funeral without Barbara. It seems like a fairly big faux pas to sit out of such a prominent statesman's funeral because he can't bring his wife. I can't help but think that this is more a reflection of George's health than Barbara's or Barbara is in fairly worse condition than we know and could slip out at a moment's notice.

The Pope's death was 4 years ago and a lot can happen to a senior's health within that time frame.

And if you ask me, he looks pretty frail compared to Jimmy Carter who is the exact same age as him (who looks very good for his age). I expect him and Barbara Bush to kick it sometime within the next two years personally.

yeah I'm sure he would want to be there if he could.
He tried to warn the secret service about a guy who threatened JFK in Houston Just before he was killed in Dallas.

I think it's Barbara. Didn't he make another jump from the airplane not too long ago?

Traveling and attending so many ceremonies at 6 months post open heart surgery, especially if she has had any issues/complications from it, which can happen is just not a wise idea.

How frail could he be? He just went sky diving back in June. He looked pretty damn heathy that day.

And Barbara had heart surgery in March and she went with George and watched him when he went sky diving and she looked pretty heathy herself.

Them no going has nothing to do with her heart surgery. Something else is going on here.

They look older and frailer than my great-grandmother and she's older than them.

So?

That dosen't explain why George, who is suppose to be so frail but is heathy enought to go skydiving and why Barbara, who is suppose to be so sick from heart surgery she had in march, could fly to Maine to watch George skydive but can't fly to DC to sit in a church.

Like I said, Something else is going on here.

Have you seen HW Bush walk around? He shuffles because his hips are so bad. He either walks with a cane or leans on someone.

I know, He did it on the day he went skydiving, But the point is he still gets around. He doesn't let it stop him from doing what he wants, Like skydiving.

I know what you're saying...I just don't think anyone should be reading into this too much. I doubt it's some conspiracy. :oldrazz:

I don't think it's a conspiracy either, I never said it was. I just don't think their heath is the reason they ain't going.

I would hate to think that HW would let something petty like politics get in the way of something like this. (Both sides of the aisle had an enormous amount of respect for Ted Kennedy, whether they agreed with him or not.)

It's not politics. Health with elderly people can change quickly and they are fragile. I take care of an 84 and 82 year old every day and their conditions can swing quickly.

I would hate to think that too, And I doubt HW would, but from what I've read about Barbara I wouldn't put it past her.

I hope she wouldn't but it wouldn't surprise me.

HW wouldn't sit out for political reasons. Unlike his son, Bush Sr. is capable of keeping politics from being personal. Hell, he's even close friends with Clinton. This has to be for health reasons on HW's part or Barbara has entered a state where she could pass any moment and he doesn't want to leave her side.

I can't think of an instance when George W. made politics personal. He was a bad President, but always seemed like a good guy.

He called a reporter who asked him a fair question a "Major league ass hole," while the microphone was unknowingly on. That's pretty personal. Valerie Plame comes to mind as well. Bush may not be directly linked, but his administration is tainted with dirty tactics and underhanded and personal attacks on people. And as president, buck stops with him. I'd be very suprised if he was as in the dark as people act.

HW has become very good friends with Bill Clinton. I don't think he would let politics get in the way because he has shown with his friendship with Clinton that he is above that. (Barbara on the other hand, I wouldn't put it past either.)

...and whether directly involved or not, those tactics reflect George W. Bush.

UPDATE #6: Reports are saying that HW Bush will not be attending the Kennedy funeral because his son, W Bush will be in attendance and will 'represent the entire Bush family'

...
