The Kennedy Thread

HW has become very good friends with Bill Clinton. I don't think he would let politics get in the way because he has shown with his friendship with Clinton that he is above that. (Barbara on the other hand, I wouldn't put it past either.)

...and whether directly involved or not, those tactics reflect George W. Bush.

Bingo to both.

UPDATE #6: Reports are saying that HW Bush will not be attending the Kennedy funeral because his son, W Bush will be in attendance and will 'represent the entire Bush family'

...

Yeah, there is something more at play here unless HW is so petty and political that he does not want to give Kennedy the honor of having all living presidents at his funeral, but again...that sounds nothing at all like HW.

It's most likely health. George W. being there as a representative for the entire family makes sense if Barbara and HW's health is even simply average for a couple their age.

Even if it's Bush I or II, Cheney, Palin, etc.

Also, Don't act like one party's innocent and the other isn't. :facepalm

Heck, they turned Nixon's funeral into a full fledged circus. And he merely quit to avoid being impeached and took a pardon that almost destroyed the Republican party.

I would see a problem with this if it were a former President that had died....but I don't see the major deal with this.......a family member representing the Bush family seems just fine IMO. No matter what their reasons.....

He never seemed as healthy or as robust as President Carter, even though they're the same age. That's part of why the skydiving thing has always thrown me.

Of course he is an old airman though...maybe skydiving doesn't seem to be that big a deal to him.

I'd say it's almost certainly Barbara and it's a health issue...even if it isn't major, traveling and attending ceremonies might be more than she should try atm.

The Absent-Minded Chairman

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203706604574376720192072820.html

When normal people happen to "find" their own money, it might mean a twenty left in a winter coat, or discovering change beneath the sofa cushions. But if you're Charlie Rangel, it means doubling your net worth.
Earlier this month the Chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee "amended" his 2007 financial disclosure form—to the tune of more than a half-million dollars in previously unreported assets and income. That number may be as high as $780,000, because Congress's ethics rules only require the Members to report their finances within broad ranges. This voyage of personal financial discovery brings Mr. Rangel's net worth for 2007 to somewhere between $1.028 million and $2.495 million, while his previous statement came in at $516,015 and $1.316 million.

When you're a powerful Congressman and working diligently to increase tax rates to pay for President Obama's health-care plan, we suppose it's easy to lose track of one of your checking accounts. That would be the one at the federal credit union with a balance somewhere between $250,001 and maybe as high as $500,000. And when you're crunched for time and pulling together bills to pass in a rush, we guess, too, that you might overlook several other investment accounts, even if some of them are sizable, such as the ones Mr. Rangel missed at JP Morgan, Merrill Lynch, Oppenheimer and BlackRock.

Oh, and those vacant properties in Glassboro, in southern Jersey? Everybody in Manhattan tries not to think much about New Jersey, so those lots and their as-much-as-$15,000 value must also have slipped down the memory hole. (The New York Post reported yesterday that Mr. Rangel failed to pay property taxes for two of the lots, according to the county clerk's office.)

The Chairman probably isn't doing a lot of dining at KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell or Long John Silver's, either, which may explain why he didn't disclose the $1,001 to $15,000 in stock he owns in Yum Brands, the conglomerate that runs those chain restaurants. Compared to his undisclosed portfolio stake in PepsiCo—$15,001 to $50,000—that's practically a rounding error.
All lawmakers amend their financial reports from time to time, though rarely are the errors this extensive. Via email, a Rangel spokesman declined to offer details about how the errors occurred, noting that "Once the Ethics Committee completes its work, then we can answer questions in more detail." He added that Mr. Rangel is now "confident that his records have been subjected to an exhaustive and complete review, and that the amendments accurately reflect his financial interests."

Among other issues, Mr. Rangel is currently under investigation regarding his use of four rent-stabilized apartments at New York City's tony Lenox Terrace and soliciting donations with his official letterhead for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College of New York, which was itself built with a $1.9 million earmark. Yet another part of the probe is his failure to report $75,000 in income from a rental villa at the beachfront Punta Cana Yacht Club, in the Dominican Republic.

Mr. Rangel blamed that last one on the language barrier because he doesn't speak Spanish. We can only imagine what language he speaks with his accountants and tax attorneys
Hey, if he ends up having to resign, he sounds like a lock for an Obama appointment. :hehe:

And as to his "language barrier" excuse, are we really supposed to believe that the head of the committee responsible for writing taxes didn't know he had to report rental income, even if it were earned in another country? :whatever:

He tandems when skydiving.....you do very little when you tandem.

He does not come down on his own legs.....he is in a sitting position, the person he is diving with, takes the full force of the ground.

If you ask me, Jimmy Carter looks damn good for a man his age. I'd be very surprised if he didn't make it past 100 or something.

cool, I just graduated from SUNY Oswego and most of my family is from the Buffalo area

I went to SUNY Alfred and I live in the Rochester area. Got a great view of Canandaigua Lake where I live.

Very nice, I love being out in the Rochester area. I have college friends that live in Palmyra, Macedon, and Pittsfield

That area is absolutely gorgeous......

I would have given anything to have gotten a teaching job in that area.....but teachers seem to grow up there, get a job, and teach till they die....:csad:

It's still very hard on a body even when you are doing it tandem, Especially for someone HWs age. The jerk when the chute is pulled probably hurts like hell if you are in your 80s like HW.

I've got to give it to HW, I wouldn't be up there if I was in my 80s.

Well, that is his love....

Senator Edward M. Kennedy

Statement from the Kennedy Family

“Edward M. Kennedy – the husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle we loved so deeply – died late Tuesday night at home in Hyannis Port. We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever. We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them without him.”

The Kennedy's always remind me why I love this country. Not the downward spiral this country took for the last eight years.

I would really rather remember his ability to befriend the other side of the aisle, the legislation he pushed with Bush, the multitude of strong legislation that has his name on it over the almost 47 years in Congress, rather than continuing the partisanship thinking in your post.

At least for the moment, anyway....

I'm not counting that out, just stating what's on my mind if that's alright.

Definitely ok...

My mom just found a picture of her with Teddy at the Denver airport when she was 16.

Pretty kewl.

The young man that could quite possibly continue the Kennedy Legacy....

Edward Kennedy III

I wonder why the Dems didn't name the bill after Kennedy before his death? He was known for his push for healthcare long before last week. The republicans did this with Reagan and now the Dems are doing it with Ted. Lets not scrape the bottom of the barrel to put his name on something just to get it passed. Why not truly craft a great bill and then honor Ted with his name on it instead of just putting his name on a sinking ship?
