I almost think it was worse than using a CGI double. It still would've felt weird and icky but it might've worked on a storytelling level. But the way they had to bend over backwards to make her unremarkable lines work did nothing but harm the overall narrative. So it still seems like Leia's not there because she's not reacting to anything going on.
And in the end it was still CGI anyways since they composited her face on a double for most of the film. The Last Jedi already felt like a denouement to her time in the franchise, I don't know why Abrams and & Lucasfilm were so determined to force her into TRoS to the detriment of the film.
It still robs Kylo's arc of any meaningful interaction with his mother, which was key to his redemption.
