Horror 'The Last of Us' HBO Series

While I understand not wanting to drag the show out, are they really just going to stick with adapting the games that we've already played? That just seems creatively lazy to me. Like they are just making another "remake/remaster" of the games but instead of games you can actually play you are just watching live action cinematics without the gameplay to break it up. Like they really can't come up with new stories to tell in this world with Ellie and Joel as the leads in this setting?

Finally. I’ve been saying for like the past 30 years that video game adaptations can absolutely be good if they just adapt games that have actual stories (i.e., not stuff like Street Fighter) and actually take it seriously without cramming in a bunch of nonsense to “appeal to mainstream audiences” or whatever they thought they were doing by centering Mortal Kombat on some awful “audience” character no one cares about or turning Super Mario Brothers into Blade Runner for kids. Really excited for this show.

The thing is the likes of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat have enough lore where they could adapt a good movie out of it. They just don’t take that lore seriously enough and change things in really stupid ways, I.e The Cole character.

TLOU isn’t some great story, it’s a fairly generic zombie story. But they respected the lore and the characters and that’s why it looks like we got a great adaptation.

The hate towards TLOU 2 and Druckmann(from certain factions) is insane.Shades of the MShe-u , The last Jedi sort. The subreddit is still whining like 2-3 years later about TLOU 2

I feel sorry for all the non-gamers who are going to get the story spoiled by the people who can't stop crying about part 2.

I am not sure why they even need to bother adapting TLOU II anyway. Just use the first game as your basis and tell stories from there.

Same. I haven't spoiled a thing for my family who want to watch this. I just can't wait to see their reaction to certain parts.

Well then what's the point of telling the 1st part if they ignore the 2nd part? The ending of the first game loses all its meaning without the consequences that comes after.

The 2nd game is fantastic for me so far I really hope we get at least 2 seasons out of it.

Because its an adaption? Its not like Part II is as beloved or as revered as the first game.

I don't think they would since Bella Ramsey is 19, same age as Ellie in Part II and she'd be even older once they get around to filming anyway.
This could be the reason why they recast the actress for Ellie. Bella Ramseu is 19, but she looks really young.

They may want an actress who looks older.

Part II is miles better than Part I. It expands on everything in Part 1 as first game become plot of storyline in II. Everyone who enjoys good story , having new characters, whole world building along gameplay mechanics likes Part II. Just because someone hated TLOU2 because of choices made in story, shouldnt give anyone right to preach whatever does Part II needs adaptation or not.

Just handful of child loudmouths on internet with keyboard should not be given voice how majority feel about great game which is loved by most fans and critics.

I liked Part II a lot more than Part I.

Yeah, it's a whole two points lower than the first game on Metacritic. Not as revered at all.

People love to tear down Part II because they didn't like the direction the story went but that doesn't mean it isn't a masterfully crafted game. It won Game of the Year for a reason.

The ONLY thing that Naughty Dog was in the wrong about as far as Part II were the misleading trailers that made it seem like
Joel was going to be sticking around for much more of the game than he actually did. There was no need for that.

I'd rather they didn't do that. The core of TLOU1 is the relationship between Ellie and Joel and you'd lose some of that by recasting for no real reason other than her having a baby face.

The point is, why do we have to just recreate the games we've already played?

It's really no different than a book getting a movie adaptation. A good deal of the intended audience for the show doesn't play video games. It's the creators' way of translating that story to a more accessible medium. People who've never picked up a controller in their life can now enjoy the story as gamers have for the past decade.

So the whole point of doing these TV shows is to just recreate cutscenes from the games in live action?

No, it's to adapt them to the medium of television? A non-interactive medium told in hour(ish)-long chapters, with different flesh and blood actors, sets, props and effects on screen, with scenes added and subtracted as showrunners see fit. The way viewers engage with a TV show is an entirely different experience from how players engage with a game. It's a totally different medium and format, as are all visual mediums that adapt each other.

This is definitely not a shot for shot recreation of the game. Some of the details we've already seen make that much obvious. There are new characters who weren't in the game and there are other changes that mean this is going to follow the story without being just rehashing the story verbatim.

The Last Of Us is a great setting for a TV show and Ellie and Joel and their relationship is a great heart for it. If all they do is stick to the structure of the first two games, that is a wasted opportunity because there is a lot of stories that can be told during the gap between the first and second game (and that is only if the second game is canon to this show, which it doesn't have to be). It seems very risk adverse (which isn't in the spirit of what made first game so popular and what made the second game so interesting).

You could say that about adaptations of most book series, but that doesn't stop those adapting from mostly sticking to the books. Both games have great stories. They want to adapt them. Simple as that, imo.

The whole problem with previous video game movies has been exactly what you're asking for. 'we have already played and seen the game let's do something new in the same universe audiences haven't seen yet' didn't work out well for the likes of Uncharted, The Resident Evil Netflix show or a host of others.

The praise this show is getting includes praise on how faithful it is and that's why we finally have what seems to be an outright great video game adaptation.

The Ringer-verse pod posted a general preview for the show and Ben Lindbergh said episode 3 was really special.

Damn, Prime subscribers in France will get HBO stuff.

Meanwhile, me as a Canadian:
