Horror 'The Last of Us' HBO Series

While I definitely can agree that this episode wasn't as strong as the other three, I still found it plenty enjoyable. Joel and Ellie finally starting to bond put a huge smile on my face. Melanie Lynksey's character is interesting thus far and I was glad to see Jeffrey Pierce being integrated into this, man's still got his raspy Tommy voice lol.

Plus I feel the levity was needed since next episode
we're going to get traumatized by Sam and Henry's deaths all over again. :yay:

So apparently that conversation about the magazine was ripped right from the games?

I need to find a good playthrough of this game to watch when the season ends. I did like Joel teaching Ellie how to properly hold a gun.
Very much worth doing if you aren’t a gamer.

Yeah, like everyone said, bit of a slower and breather episode, but, at this point, it’s nice to have

because we’re definitely going to be getting into some really heavy stuff in the next episode.

Also, this episode was very crucial and important in further developing Joel and Ellie’s relationship. I feel that Bella Ramsey’s and Pedro Pascal’s rapport as their characters has officially been cemented in this episode. Not that it was bad before, but, like the actors themselves, the characters needed that time to get closer together and grow that bond over time. All of those things planted in the previous episodes are finally starting to pay off.

Loved the small little moments that we get in this between them, like Ellie thinking the coffee smells like “burnt s**t” and Joel slurping the coffee as he drinks it to annoy her. Loved, loved, loved that they included the joke book and the conversation in the truck about the gay porn mag. Small little moments in the game that definitely brought a lot of levity and made me laugh, and they still definitely made me laugh in this episode. Their chemistry together is only going to get better from here.

Also, is it just me, or did Ellie telling the diarrhea joke at the very end and both of them laughing at it give anybody vibes of that piece of concept art for the first game of Ellie and Joel laughing around the campfire? I remember Troy Baker saying it’s probably his favorite piece of art related to that game. I wish I could post it but I don’t know how.

Just those small, quiet, moments of respite enjoying simple, little things in the midst of terrible circumstance and a broken world. Remnants of once everyday living that we take for granted.

I thought the episode overall was a good pit stop and it's main goal is to have bonding time with Joel and Ellie.

Looking through how much time we have left for the season, I can only imagine it going this way:

Episode 5 is going to show us the entire arch of Joel/Ellie and Henry and Sam in a shorten way and they're finally gonna show us the bloater.

Episode 6 is going to reunite Joel with Tommy and introduce Maria and possibly take us to the University of Colorado

Episode 7 is probably going to be similar to episode 3 where we get the Ellie and Riley flashback with Joel being injured in and Ellie finding medicine.

Episode 8 is the cannibal episode in winter

Episode 9 is the highway underpass horde and of course the big hospital scene ending.
Based on the episode titles that seems pretty spot on to me. Seeing it all laid out like that I can also understand why the season is 9 episodes and not 10. Combining the original layout for the first two episodes into one was the right move.

I do, but I don't own a modern console. I've gotten more play out of my 3DS recently than anything!
Haha, cool. Walkthroughs these days are pretty good anyway so it’s a good way to get a feel for a game and see all the story/character stuff if you can’t play.

Not a bad episode, but definitely the worst so far. I think I prefer the early outbreak scenes much more than those ripped straight from the games. Because while the show does an excellent job with the sets and locations, the scenes featuring Joel and Ellie traversing through this world continue to feel like slightly better written Walking Dead to me. A

Joel is even in the same resting position when it cuts to the next shot in both versions. They didn’t have to do that, but they did. That’s such great attention to detail.

I love how when this show does straight up lift dialogue and sequences from the game, the rest of the show is still written in such a way that they still make sense, fit and work within the adaptation of the story they’re trying to tell in the show. They never feel out of place. Really shows that this is being made by people who love and understand the original source material enough to know when to keep stuff and when to change stuff where it makes sense to. They show respect, but aren’t too precious about it.

Man, I f***ing love this f***ing show.

The episode felt simultaneously poorly paced and incomplete. Like it was supposed to be one episode with the next episode but they couldn't figure out what to cut out so they split it into two. This thing felt like a B-tier TWD episode to me.

Anyways, I look forward to the next one but the prologue that Balagov directed is still by far my favorite thing to come out of the show so far. Hoping the show can get back to that level.

Well the title of episode 7 clearly indicates what we will get there.

Late to the party but I enjoyed episode 3. Very touching and emotional. But I think I would have preferred if they had stuck closer to the game and
kept Bill alive. Making things even more tragic. And we still could have had the backstory of them as a couple living out their days in love
. But as a story of 2 people finding love in a world where that seems impossible, it was done very well.

Another great episode. I can’t wait to see what happens next week and what comes out of that floor (I’m pretty sure I already know but I’m excited to see more of it). Joel and Ellie are perfect together, and Melanie Lynskey is always great. Like Flickchick said, Yellowjackets needs to come back like NOW.

I simultaneously finished the 2nd game tonight and watched episode 4. The 2nd game is a masterpiece imo and I can't wait to see it adapted.

I also really enjoyed episode 4. Joel and Ellie are really starting to bond and you can see the seeds
of that father/daughter relationship they have really beginning to develop
. Also, that song choice for the credits .

Makes me wonder what they're going to do about Future Days.

I'm intrigued by an adaptation of the second game too, but in my case it's because I think that game was significantly weaker in terms of story and I think the show has a big chance to improve upon that.

It's particularly the ludo-narrative dissonance, meaning story and gameplay aren't aligned well, that I feel like it's very likely that they can fix. Particularly the end works really poorly for me given how the played character acts in the gameplay leading up to it, at least how I played. Since the show doesn't have to let a player do game things in the story they can portray it in a way that makes more sense to me.

If Marzin can also clean up some of the issues I had with Druckmann's writing outside of that I'll be even happier. The first game had no issues with the gameplay feeling disjointed from the story themes, and the ending plays very well into how the gameplay has been, so there aren't any obvious parts where I expected improvements in this season, yet they have still delivered them so I'm hopeful.

I loved the story in the 2nd game personally. However I think the show can and will adapt differently. Abby in particular needs to be introduced and developed earlier in my eyes.

I would have loved to see Bill and Ellie trade barbs in the show like they did in the game but ultimately I liked Bill dying with Frank even better. If it had played out like it did in the game and Bill didn't commit suicide with Frank, it would have made Ellie kind of unlikeable to give a 70something year old man attitude after he just lost the love of his life. The Bill we know from the game was there in the show before he met Frank but once that happened he evolved into something more.

I get what you're saying I do. But I think they could have re-written it so Ellie didn't give so much sass and even became a bit sympathetic to Bill before they depart. Especially as a gay man when Ellie also turns out to be gay. I just loved that whole section of the game and wanted to see it adapted. And Bill still being alive would have made the stuff with Frank all the more tragic for me. Re-iterating the message from Bills letter that Joel shouldn't be afraid to open his heart again
.
