Horror 'The Last of Us' HBO Series

Tommy having to waste all of his fuel on a single bloater makes this the most accurate video game adaptation to date.
The only inaccuracy there was the bloater actually died and he didn't have to resort to finishing it off with a pipe or something. :o

But to add to that, the unclimbable boxes that were stacked up in that alley were some VERY accurate video game elements. *Chef's kiss*

So I didn't play the second game, but knew plenty about the storyline

I don't know how I feel about them revealing Abby's motivations before she does what she does

We get her motivation now, how much more can they really reveal to make us empathize with her going forward?
Feels like they kinda wasted it by showing it too early, it seems more shocking and interesting to have her do the deed and then slowly peel back the layers, making viewers surprised that they now understand and feel for her a bit. Whereas the way they did it on the show feels like it will be more of an uphill climb to make people like her. Not that people liked her in the game, clearly, but that just seemed like a more interesting way to do it.

I do get your point and agree with it. Unfortunately I think the abuse poor Laura Bailey got after playing Abby probably had a hand in this decision though.

They clearly wanted to spare Kaitlyn from some of that and who can blame them.

Yeah but that's the thing, I don't think this will spare her necessarily
I think the game's set up made it easier to grow to understand her, whereas the TV version I don't know that we'll like her any more, not by the end of this season at least
After next season seeing her go through some s***, maybe, but I feel like Kaitlyn Dever's got a while to wait before redemption

That said, TV fans are way less toxic than gamers. I don't think female Pedro Stans will send her death threats like the incel Joel Stans probably did to Bailey

I think I agree with this to a certain extent. The catalyst for warming up to Abby was finding out her motivation behind killing Joel. The nuance came from experiencing it through her eyes, and personalizing her relationship with her dad. They already revealed that, so having flashbacks to add more detail isn't going to change much. TV audiences are also going to have to wait quite a lot longer to see Abby's side, and have that much more time to stew in their rage.

Due to the structure of the show, I think it makes perfect sense to be more up front about the why of it all. Otherwise people are sitting around waiting for basic info for two years. The game structure works because you go directly into it, imo. That said, I do wish they held onto it until the golf scene. Dever's eyes as she explains it hits harder than the kind of Marvel post-credits scene vibe the season opener had.

Yeah SQ pretty much answers this for me. People will be left to stew on Abby's actions for a lot longer than they did in the game. It's going to be years in fact because her side of the story will 2027 at the earliest.

I do think TV fans are less toxic in general, but if this approach even halves any abuse Dever gets they will consider it worth it.

I didn’t play the game so maybe it would all hit different if the audience wasn’t clued into Abby’s motivations but like… did anyone really NOT know at this point? These criticisms are all coming from people who knew what was going to happen anyway so I really don’t think it would have hit that differently for them. And for people who didn’t know, I don’t think it’s a problem either because the shock is what happens to Joel more so than why it happens or who does it.

Tonight's episode looked... familiar.

Merced is not playing game Dina at all and I don't care. She's so amazing. :funny:

Her only direction is "looking hot as sh** at all times" and I'm also not complaining.

Solid episode all over. Really liked the new additions like the council meeting and the devastating first look at the Scars.

1. Look hot as ****
2. Flirt her ass off.
3. Look concerned because she's kind of surrounded by idiots.
4. Roll dem eyes.

Bit of a mixed bag for me this episode. I liked them exploring more of a certain character who helps set Ellie on her path.

I don't like what they're doing with Tommy. He is a lot more calm than in the game and it's a change I am not liking for the moment. But see what the next few weeks brings.

Interesting first look at The Scars.

Merced as Dina is still fantastic.

Wife and I watched episode 2 last night. I never played the game, but I going into this was well aware of Joel being killed cause I remember the rage all over the internet when it happened. Wife however did not. She was not happy at all to say the least. Very much was in rage quit mode much like I know people were when they played the game. Found it interesting watching her reaction to it since I was prepared for it. That scene hits hard

Did the game directly state how much time passed like the show did? I haven't played it in years and don't recall. Speaking of the game, I seem to remember Ellie's grief being much more understated until basically the end. If I got that right, I appreciate the different approach to it.

Yep I watched it with my folks and Aunty last night. 2 of them wouldn’t believe it was true at first I had to outright state he was dead.

The game did not. It implied there wasn’t much time difference but I may have interpret it wrong. But yes Ellie was mainly angry in the game until towards the end. I did like the added moment of her crying while going through Joel’s stuff. I’m just not liking the changes with Tommy so far. Especially one of the best parts of game 2 for me was the boss fight against him as Abby.

As far as acting performances go, EVERYONE was killing it in episode 3. Merced and O'Hara as usual, Bella Ramsey was amazing at conveying a more mature Ellie after the trauma she went through and Gabriel Luna even got me in the feels right at the start with his goodbye to Joel, especially "Give Sarah my love." :weeping:

It seemed like more time passed in the show between Joel's death and Ellie and Dina going to Seattle. In the game, whatever injuries Ellie sustained from Abby's group aren't as severe and it didn't take her three months to recover. There was one aspect of Ellie grieving that was pulled directly from the game, and that was her going through Joel's belongings at the house. I also liked the added touch of her visiting Joel's grave (and the coffee grounds :weeping: ).

That was an excellent transition episode. I almost melted when Elle woke up screaming at the hospital after dreaming of the horrific death of Joel. I like the touch of the town meeting about what to do about Joel’s death. Liked the fact that the dude who called Elle a slur, had her back in the town meeting. Tommy is so conflicted. It’s amazing how Joel’s decision 5 years ago will affect everyone and their loved ones going forward.

Elle and Dina’s relationship is going to be fire going forward. They are a powerful team. They seem to be sprinkling their game moments throughout the game.

Great introduction of the Scars. That scene with the group was totally different from the game. It actually through me off. Hopefully they do the game introduction in future episodes. Was not impressed with WLF they looked like a bunch of extras. I thought they were former military remnants not a bunch of civilians. Looking forward to next week. Hopefully we will see Abby.

I could have sworn she was in the preview for this episode but I guess I was mistaken. Either way, I'm sure that we'll be seeing her again before the end of the season since they're going to be covering some of what's going on with the WLF.

They need to cast Eve Ridley (Ruthye Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow) as a future Scar today. She would be perfect.

She visits the grave in the game also. It's still covered in snow that's what implies not much time has passed.
