Horror 'The Last of Us' HBO Series

It's going to be interesting to see how people (who haven't played the games) will react to season 3. If entire episodes are from Abby's perspective, it will probably feel like a new spin-off. I wonder if they'll lose viewers who were mostly watching for Joel and Ellie, I can imagine it might turn some people off.

I was also surprised with the "2 more seasons" comment. I don't think there's that much story left. 🤔 (Unless they're doing 2 short seasons...)
Well with the 7 episodes this season, it felt extremely short
So if it's two more 7 episode-seasons, they're gonna need all of that

but the 2+ year wait to get the rest of the story will be frustrating and absolutely a momentum killer

I agree with you, but we don't feed the trolls round here :cwink:
Excuse me, these boards are built upon the graveyards of kneecapped trolls. I'm beyond done with the crowd who can't adequately verbalize "I hate gays, women, pronouns and I'm real mad I can't say the n-word", so they use WOKE and DEI as shorthand. Call 'em out and challenge them.

You know that scene stood out to me too and the only thing I can think of..
That's obviously gonna be Abby and Yara's boat that Ellie takes to get back to the aquarium and so the only purpose that scene served is so in S3 we can have a nod to it, maybe Abby tries to return but the boat is gone so her and Lev have to trek through Seraphite village to get to another boat.

But it did feel like 3-4 minutes we did not need to spend in an episode that was already rushing through other parts.
Oh that's a great observation.

I see a lot of whining about how perfectly that washed up to shore, so it only makes sense that it's Abby's. In the game, however, they hear fighting back in the direction of their boat and decide to trek through Haven. Given the Ellie addition, I could see it happening as it provides a clear motivation to get to Haven.

Wow, they didn't even have the guts to kill a dog or have Ellie murder Mel by hand

If I had to sum up this season it would be one gif:

It seems like the writers were unsure if the TV audience was going to sympathize with Ellie's motivations in the 2nd game and consequently made some baffling choices with her characterization in the finale and season as a whole. That weird scene where she wanted to save the guy from the WLF makes her revenge mission seem like a side quest. No one in the room pointed out how jarring it is for her to want to sacrifice the mission to help a random and NOT Tommy a few minutes later?

I mean, I'm glad she didn't kill the dog because then my fiance would've turned off the show never to watch again

but she should've killed Mel purposely, the baby was the unknown collateral damage, they didn't need to make Mel's death itself an "oopsie"

I feel like one of the biggest impacts for me with the game was when you realize the story is not about revenge but about forgiveness

And I have my doubts how well the show will be able to execute that. I really hope they don't change the ending or anything cheap like that.

Plenty of story left. Elle’s demons, Dina’s baby, the glimmer of the Fire Fliies, Tommy’s relationship with his wife and kid, Abby’s redemption, and California/slavers. I thought when they announced they were doing season two I always thought they needed 20 episodes plus to do the game justice. I wouldn’t mind even an episode about the profit although I think we will get that in season 3.

The only time I’ve heard a director say they left something out because “it would have been one death too many” where it actually held water was on The Iron Claw. Which…yeah. Nobody else gets a pass! :argh:

I'm kind of on the fence about cutting the dog's death out of the show but more leaning towards they made the right call. I don't know, it's just a different experience when playing the game because you're controlling Ellie. I really do see the argument about Ellie being way less sympathetic to the audience between the one-two punch of that and killing a pregnant woman. I get that the audience isn't supposed to be rooting for her at this point but to quote DMX, "leave a dog alone". :o

But I also say this as someone who would go way out of my way to avoid hurting any of the dogs in the game with the exception of Alice because they gave you no other choice, so I'm a little biased there. I already felt terrible stealthily shooting arrows through their owners' necks and hearing their subsequent whines and cries.

I think unfortunately they did a lot to soften Ellie's dark revenge stuff in the show and I feel like by doing so, it doesn't quite feel earned when she starts to regret some of her actions or realize what she has become.

I get not wanting to show her killing a dog. I also get that we can't directly translate gameplay sections where she takes out a camp of WLF soldiers - though we definitely could have had something in that area. Just her taking out a group of soldiers showing no mercy. She does torture Nora though we don't really get to see much of it. I don't like how Owen + Mel was a 2 for 1 accidental reaction. The surprise pregnancy comes afterwards anyways, we didn't need the death itself to be an 'oopsie'.

When Dina tends to Ellie's wounds on her back I was honestly thinking "when did she get these? we've barely seen her in combat".

Also thankfully the episode didn't cut to credits right after but can we talk about the gunshot + fade to black? That's like film school level. Surely there was a better way to end that scene on a cliffhanger than using that old cliché.

Tropes don't always mean "bad" as they do serve a purpose, but I wouldn't have cut back to Ellie. You just need something to punctuate that moment to reset the stage.
