The Hunger Games - Part 2

Not sure why it is ridiculous. It is based on the money people are willing to spend on seeing these people on film.
Yeah, if any one of us actually brought in hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for our bosses, we'd deserve at least a few million, too. It's not about how much "work" is involved, it's about how much it's worth to the people paying for it.

The wife and I just finished watching it on DVD....it was a much better experience this time. When we saw it at the theater, the shaky cam stuff annoyed me and made my wife sick (it was like being seasick for her)....but on the TV it was ok. She figures the big screen was just too overwhelming for her but the TV screen was fine.

I rented it last night. It was okay but I was hoping for more action. The scene where the kids were killing each other when they first got to the arena was brutal but I had hoped there would be more of it.

Have you seen Battle Royale?

Yup, I think that was part of my problem as well.

A big 10/10

Never got a chance to watch this in theaters even though I planned on it. Finally got a chance to watch it and boy was it great. Never read the book but I have watched Battle Royale and read other Japanese works (Hunter x Hunter, Deadman Wonderland) which reminded me in ways of this great story. Regardless of those reminders of other work this movie is still very much original and packs its western tones in spades but elegantly so.

The encampment "egalitarianism" the people in the districts are kept under was done quite efficiently I thought, and the oppressive decadent hierarchy made me want to hurl so a job well done there.

There's always an uneasy feeling to everything. It's uncomfortable to see the Capitol take everything so lightly and Katniss perplexed and disgusted facial expressions towards it all really do a great job of translating what I would think most of the audience is thinking. Wonderful job by Jennifer Lawrence here as she completely sells the horrific nature of the entire Hunger Game competition is.

The supporting cast is incredibly strong too (especially Hutcherson and Harrelson). They serve as the essential emotional backbone that keeps this story going and what a job they do. Everybody honestly did a solid job here.

It left me wanting for more. Seriously, as soon as it ended I was already ready to know what happens next. Only the greatest of stories leave you with that itchy feeling of "I need more, right now in this very instance".

I really liked what Gary Ross did here and I believe he's the one that also made what could have been a standard run of the mill sci fi action movie into something far more memorable and substantive.

It's really a shame that he's not coming back as I would have loved to see what he would have delivered in the sequel. :(

I felt very much the same way after seeing it and stated as such. I was surprised how much criticism he was getting. He made this a worthwhile experience.

Even watching it again and loving it this time, I still couldn't be happier that Ross is gone. :/

Both the score and sountrack for this movie are terrific.

So, I saw this once in theaters after having just read the book.

Bought it yesterday, and rewatching it, it is MUCH better the second time around. I actually think I love it now.

I think that anybody who is iffy the first go around should watch it again. My rating went from a shakey 7.5/10 to an 8.5/10. I plan on buying it when I save enough. Eventhough getting a better phone is at the top of my list right now I'll squeeze out some cash for Games.

And Sawyer, I agree with you completely about the score.

Both the score and sountrack for this movie are terrific.

James Newton Howard is almost certainly returning for Catching Fire, since he worked with Francis Lawrence on Water for Elephants and I am Legend. His Katniss theme is wonderful... and it would be nice for him to develop that further.

More evidence to me of why Ross leaving is a benefit. If Kev could have really nailed the idea of different dystopian districts..would have been great. A stronger more memorable score would have gone a long way as well.

Overall, while HUNGER GAMES was alright as a film - I would have loved to see Kevin's vision of it because that looks just as dark as I remember my first time through reading the script. While I haven't read the books, it just seems more true to the tone of it?

about this pitch trailer. before the debate starts. just because this is how the pitch trailer looks that doesnt mean that this is what the director wanted the movie to be. this was a pitch. its designed to get him a job.

Besides two districts and the Capital the majority of the other districts are low tech and poor.

While I like that mash-up trailer, I really do. But it iswhat it is: a mash-up of other movies. Then Kevin's real vision would probably be a very derivative (visually) take on the books that we have seen already. More of the Blade Runner look that Hollywood has been aping for the past 30 years.

Say what you will of Gary Ross' take, I liked the understated look of the film. It's very 70's sci-fi.

I finally watched the Hunger Games and it was decent. A solid start to a promising story and world. In that regard it reminded me of Chris Columbus Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Strong enough start, pleased most of the fans, created new fans, brought together a good cast etc. It did what it needed to do without any major hiccups. However, it can be improved on, and I am glad there is another director taking the reigns on the next one. I like getting different directors takes on the story and the world and I feel there are better directors who can offer a unique vision of this world. Id love to see Alfonso Cuaron take a whack at it. That man could really nail it.

As someone who has made pitch-trailers for studio execs to show them the intent and purposes of things, I will say this. I sometimes think about the cast I'd like to be in it, it's amazing when I can find the right clips to use. I don't think about the setting. The lighting, you really can't fix but it can give some sort of idea. What can you do? Well you can focus on the editing and music that accompanies everything you've collected.

Basically to me it shows that the film would have been a lot darker, grittier, and frankly more adult than what we got. I never really pictured the film being abundant in color design. The script didn't really make note of that. I pictured what this guy did.

You only pitch if you want a project, and you always pitch what you want that project to be. I know absolutely no one, myself included, who creates a sizzle reel thinking "I'm going to not portray my unique vision for this and give them the expected version because that's sure to get me the job!" You get the job from your vision. And what this guy showed us is -- dark and gritty and almost nightmarish - and that's what attracted me to the script, all of those qualities about it.

I really wouldn't call the film HUNGER GAMES under-stated. The costumes were extravagant and the colors were abundant (a lot more than say Times Square). The only really under-stated aspects to me was everything leading up to leaving for the games and the games themselves. What I missed was the darkness of it and the darkness in the sub-plot of the guy Katiniss left back home:

We saw teenagers victimized to brain washing and becoming drones to work the games. If I also remember correctly tongues were cut out as well to make sure they couldn't speak. It's been a while since I read it. But just the whole tone of that scene and how it interacted with the games was beyond chilling to me. And that tone? Is the one I would have rather seen, it's what drew me to the edge of my seat at least.

Don't get me wrong, the film that came out I'd give a 7 or 8 out of 10. But, this vision? It just kind of irks me that the version I was hyped for was a close possibility.

Hey, this movie is pretty dope for real. I think once the actual games start it becomes a tad bit more on the boring side but the first half is just beautiful. The production design coupled with the cinematography makes for some breathtaking shots

Just watched the DVD I bought recently, it was just as good if not better at home as when I saw it in the theater. I still love the whole style of it, even the shaky-cam beginning in District 12 that so many complain about.

The choice of making it less staged and more of a documentary feel really helps in not making the film cynical or speculative, especially in the actual games. I think it's great and I hope the next director don't step away from that style completely, with the handheld camera, the long-lens and such things. It's also a great contrast to the more sterile Capitol centered shots.

The only time the cinematography and/or editing bothers me is in the ending battle on the Cornucopia, it gets too hard to follow what happens, for such an important event.

A film highlight once again was the whole Rue sequence and especially when the uproar starts in District 11, then I get goosebumps all over. The messy way it's filmed and Howard's gorgeous music just clicks perfectly.

I'm glad the film did well financially cause now they have more money to spend on special effects the next time around, cause there were a few parts of this film where it didn't work in that department (the fire-clothes in the parade for example).

Solid acting all around too and with an outstanding Jennifer Lawrence to top it off, she just tells and sells so much with her facial expressions. She makes a huge part of this movie. Also liked that they didn't stray away from the sci-fi feel of things, loved how they showed the game-maker room and such.

I think maybe they cleaned up the photography a bit too much for the DVD transfer, I really liked that slightly grainy look that was much more apparent in the theater projection. Transfer still looks great though.

Did a blind buy with this and watched it last night, to me it was an okay movie elevated by the cast, especially Jennifer Lawrence who was terrific.

Dont quite understand the wide critical acclaim though personally, maybe its the type of movie thats better when you have read the book. I give it an 8/10 but thats mostly because the movie is elevated by the acting. I'm hoping there is a big improvement for the sequel.

Saw this last night for the first time and thought it was a pretty great movie.

However, yes, the shaky cam stuff bothered me in some points.

My thoughts exactly. I saw the movie in theaters like 2 days after reading the book and while I liked it I think the book was so fresh in my mind that the changes they made caused me to like it less. Bought the blu-ray and watched it last week and thought it was so much better on a second viewing.

Enjoyable movie no doubt and a fun sci-fi movie, i was surprised of how good this one was and the sequel might be better.

Does this movie remind anyone of Death Race 2000, Rollerball, Running Man, Battle Royale and Escape 2000 aka Turkey-Shoot?

Just saw this movie for the first time via my bluray and man is this a disturbing film. I wonder where they will go with the sequel

You know when I saw the promo images of this movie, I thought Alex Pettyfer from I am Number Four was in this. I kept expecting to see him and didnt realize that Peeta was played by a different guy till he showed up with the blonde hair
