The Lone Ranger - Part 2

Even I'm sick of Depp's weirdo characters and I was just defending him earlier this year. He should quit it and return to acting.

Edward Douglas letter to Depp on ComingSoon was pretty good.

Of course the movie wasn't going to do that well. Expensive production troubles aside it wasn't marketed well and this summer is jam packed with options. Two, three, four years ago might have been a different story. Regardless, I liked it a lot and I'm glad they made it. After sinking over $50 mil into it before they halted production (and would have lost another $50 if they had canceled it outright) it seems pretty clear to me that Disney knew it would lose money, but figured what the hell and finished it anyway.

I thought the exact same thing after I saw Dark Shadows.

Yeah haha! I wouldn't recommend it. It sucks.
I'll definitely be keeping myself DS free for the foreseeable future.

For the record I'm not calling LR a bad film. I have no idea what I will think of it and I hope all the fans enjoyed themselves at the theater. And the most important thing about any film is your own opinion. Right now I'm just talking about one of the hottest stories in entertainment as I always do.

Everyone and their grandmother knew that a 200 million dollar Lone Ranger movie was not going to end well when Disney greenlit it and yet these highly paid people didn't seem to know that they had a movie with a 99% chance of failure? It's utterly, utterly baffling. I understand taking risks but this wasn't a risk it was an obvious avoidable failure. Disney should have just given that 150mil to charity if they didn't want it.

Movie gossip- "The Lone Ranger" movie is supposed to have werewolves in it

Me- Um......

Movie gossip- "The Lone Ranger" movie halted till it's budget is cut down from 250 million to 215

Me- Not good

Movie gossip- The production team built their own ghost town, working railroad and fully functioning train.

Me- So that's where the budget went...

Movie gossip- Tonto takes center stage over "Lone Ranger's" own movie

Me- This movie is doomed

I don't know if saying westerns are uninteresting is something I'd say just because of this movie. If anything, Verbinski's Lone Ranger is a spoof.

I truly believe it might have done better had it been made three years ago. If it was released in May 2010 in place of Prince of Persia, it probably would have done better because it would have been riding the wave of Depp's success in Alice in Wonderland. Now it seems that audiences are fatigued by anything he does now that isn't Jack Sparrow.

I'd say the opposite since Tonto was just Sparrow with variations.

310 to Yuma was very successful wasn't it. I think that is one of the all time greats
it was okay but the big money maker was true grit with jeff bridges it made a 183million domestic on a small budget!

You actually watched Dark Shadows?...the previews were enough for me but bless your heart for watching that film.

I remember when the trailer was released. The first 35 seconds of that trailer was so promising. Then it went straight to hell after that.

I honestly wonder how studio execs get disappointed when bad ideas fail.

This is complete and utter speculation so take it for what it's worth (basically nothing). My imagining is that they blame everyone and everything else but themselves. This is why it failed, that is why it failed. Justify it every which way but "Damn, we screwed the pooch on this one."

Numbers aside, how was the big train sequence?

I really wish studios would just come out and say 'yep, we screwed up, it was bad judgement on our part'. Be transparent and just own up. I don't get why they try to hide behind spin doctors and bs excuses, put the hands in the air and say 'our fault', I think many people would actually appreciate it.

his return to acting hasn't really been met with good results

rum diaries
public enemies
the tourist

his wacky characters usually bring him better results

just failed this time

You mean this? http://www.comingsoon.net/news/weekendwarriornews.php?id=106204

I like Ed a lot. He's one of the only nice guys left in the biz. But that is by far the most condescending thing I've read from an entertainment journo in many years. Depp is not fine, he's more than fine. He is and has always done the movies he's wanted to do. That hasn't changed since he started, that won't change any time in the future. Trying to act like there's a "blueprint" he should follow to get his career on track makes the mistake to assume his career isn't on the same track it's always been on.

What will Transcendence be, I wonder? Good acting or crazy characters?

You may not care for the article but I don't know how anyone can defend Depp's movie choices for the last few years. This has nothing to do with box office I'm strictly talking about quality. His performances have become samey and dull with a few exceptions. I understand that he likes money and playing silly characters but enough is enough.

Based on his movie credits (not just want people remember him being in) he's had plenty of diversity in his roles over the past 10+ years. People will always bring up Pirates and Alice as "sell out" roles because they were huge box office hits and widely talked about but it's silly to say he hasn't mixed things up.

I don't understand the argument that he should take a year off to reevaluate the movies he should be in. Why? He is diverse. And why stop making up to $20 mil for his big movies? That's the success of having A-list status. Very few actors maintain it for long.

There's at least two big actions scenes with trains, if I recall correctly. One very early on and the other later in the film, both were enormous fun.
