The Lone Ranger

Looking at the painting, Depp's look might be historically accurate after all. It looks cool and weird, i think it will become a popular halloween costume in the future.

I'm really interested to see his chemistry with Hammer. Hammer has good chemistry with whoever he is with on the screen based on his Social Network performance.

So might John Reid's look, to some degree.

And although it may look interesting, Tonto wasn't Crow. He was Potawatomi which may be significant especially if the names Tonto and kemosabe (Ke-mo sah-bee) have meaning in their language.
So if they were going for authenticity not so much. if they were going for how can we excessively accentuate Depp - Mission accomplished.

Depp looks virtually unrecognizable as Tonto. That's a plus for this movie.

Hammer looks... cool. He looks very different, rather than the same 'look' he's sported in J. Edgar and Mirror Mirror.

Id laugh my ass off if Depp plays Tonto like Sparrow.

Instead of 'savvy', he says, 'e'nsIstuk'.

I'm not saying the movie will be bad, but I still think $215 million for a Lone Ranger movie is absurd.

I looked at the picture some more and came to the conclusion that I dig it. Hopefully the movie is entertaining.

I think so too.

I wish theyd just do a straight up western instead of adding sci fi elements. And even if they wanted to add those elements it should be something grounded and not too outlandish that youd need hundreds of millions of dollars to create.

Really? I think he looks quite recognizable.

Yeah case in point Asgard, usually big budget sci-fi-esque western movies flop.

Now I know most Pirates movies did bad before Pirates of The Carribbean . . . but I mean . . . that had half the budget of this movie.

My guess is that, in this story, Hammer's Lone Ranger, like Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro, will initially act very goofy, due to being relatively green, but then at some point starts to take the initiative. Who knows?

I don't know, I believe he'll be very competent (He's a lawman before he becomes the Lone Ranger), but will indeed grow from an impulsive young man driven by revenge to a hero driven by a strong sense of justice.

By the way, Tom Wilkinson's character, the movie's main villain, is called Latham Cole, and James Frain is playing his right-hand man.

He'd be very recognizable without the war paint. But the Jack Sparrow head covering and feathers (which look like dreads here) does give him away a bit.

I'm thinking Tonto's warpaint is when he's in 'superhero' mode when Reid dons his Ranger mask.

I like the look of both characters. From what I gather this is supposed to be primarily from Tonto's point of view, with the Lone Ranger being sort of a buffoon. That is a great angle to work from.

As long as the Lone Ranger isn't taking nut shots and pratfalls all over the place, I might be okay with it.

they trimmed the budget from 250 mill to 215 mill by taking out the cgi werewolfs and a train scene.really a good western shouldnt cost 215 mill! the zorro films looked good on 90mil budgets and just recent true grit had low budget and grossed like 160mill domestic! hope this is not cowboys and aliens bull crap!

^ The train scene wasn't removed.

And Cowboy & Aliens was great.

In light of something like John Carter that's been ripped off and not visually able to add something new to it's big screen adventure, I'm okay with the look of LR and Tonto signifying something different.

As to the feeling of honoring the tradition of the Lone Ranger, though it feels like why not just make something new?

I heard some people dispute that.

I dispute that. Vehemently. Johnny Depp ain't no Cherokee, period. Not even remotely. White people tell lies about having a great-great-grandmother who was a "Cherokee princess" (there is NO such thing....never was), but the proof is on the rolls. Our ancestors kept VERY meticulous records and censuses, and today, all blood quantum is calculated based on tracing your ancestry back to those rolls. Depp's supposed great-grandmother "with some Cherokee in her" does NOT appear on ANY Cherokee roll.

There was no fuss the last two times he played a Native American. It'll be fine.

What last two times???

This **** is hilarious. They've got a mixed-blood guy from Owensboro, KY who's a self-professed ethnic "mutt" playing a Potawotami character (in Texas...!!! ???) who was played by a Canadian Mohawk on TV, and this photo shows him dressing like a totally confused mess of Apache, Navajo and Lakota, based on a painting of a Crow Indian.

Oh yeah, Native Americans are going to have a field day with this. Smooth move, Depp and Disney.

The reason I say that is because Johnny Depp had said that The Ranger would be a "bufoon", so I guess that's why Mask of Zorro came to mind.

Well, they could have gone all 21 Jump Street with it.
