I don't get why the hate on that picture? What is so wrong with the look of Depp for you all to go nuts?

eh, if the anti-Christ were ever to come to Earth to fool people, that is exactly the traits he would adopt. There was an early Mark Millar comic-book done about this called 'Saviour', i never read it though.
To say that the requirements of a hero are to do with those traits, is pretty fascistic. If anything, having those traits would make your life a helluva lot easier, so it would be easier to be the hero(as people would generally be nicer to you your entire life, and you would have no problems attracting the opposite sex), or it would be easier to be evil(using your 'good' looks to pretend you were good).

I speak on behalf of all the ugly heroes out there.

edit: oh, and i really shouldn't have to say this, but I'm speaking in general here, not about anyone specifically.
I just don't like statements of body fascism like this, that Hollywood perpetuates.

but, speaking enerally, if anyone says that being good looking does not make your life easier, then they are either good looking, or ignoring the obvious.

Wasn't it Dead Man?

He played a heavily fictionalized and stylized William Blake, a white accountant from Ohio.

I guess because an Italian person can be of the Jewish faith and it wouldn't mean anything one way or the other.

You either are Native American or you aren't. You don't really have people going around claiming 180th Russian blood as proof of something.

Exactly.

There's going to be a knee-jerk "omg 'racism' lol" reaction to the knee-jerk "OMG! RACISM!" complaints, but the difference between Depp black-facing --- or, "bronze-facing" --- an ethnicity he does not belong to is that none of the Mexicans or Italians or Spaniards (or even white guys from Brooklyn) that played Indians in Hollywood's Bad Old Days ever claimed to be Indian themselves. Depp *is* trying to pass himself off, but the only tribe he belongs to is the Wannabees.

From the 1970s on until the present, Hollywood has actually done a good job of using REAL Native Americans to play authentic Native American roles in Westerns. Little Big Man, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Son of the Morning Star, Geronimo: An American Legend, Last of the Mohicans, and of course, Dances With Wolves....hell, the old 1950s TV show even used an honest-to-god Indian to play Tonto. But not Verbinski or Disney....they've set back race relations with Native Americans in Westerns about sixty years.

I don't really think "Tonto" ever did much for Native American race relations. I'm going to see what Depp brings to the performance. Maybe he'll surprise us.

Obviously there's going to be a reason for this movie to be over $200 million. It clearly isn't going to be the average Western.

1. It isn't the traditional way that Tonto is portrayed so it will get a lot of hate for that.

2. Politics also have a part in it: Despite what Depp says he has no Native American blood in him so not only do you have a non native playing the role but a liar as well. It wouldn't be AS bad if he just straight up said 'I'm an actor, it doesn't really matter' but he has to make up what he is to justify it and that pisses off even more people.

3. Others ..just hate the way it looks.

I know but the budget is still on the colossal side, although I did read something about aliens and werewolves.

The international numbers will make up for it. Western's aren't popular overseas but Depp being in it will give it at least a 200plus mil gross overseas. He will make a Western popular overseas.

As I understand, Ruth Wilson will play The Lone Ranger's sister-in-law. I'm curious to see if they are going to play the love triangle that was played in the Dynamite comic series between The Ranger, she, and Tonto.

Anyway, I SEE SPIDEY, it's kinda' of a surprise, to me anyways, to see you so enthusiastic about a film and optimistic(you almost sound sure) about its financial success at this early stage! Very surprised!!

Wow I really do come off as a b-word? It must have been my John Carter obsession.:o

I don't think that the movie is going to be a huge success or anything because of that gigantic budget but Johnny Depp+Strange costume+lots of special effects usually equals a lot of money.

Here are the stats for Depp in these types of films.

Pirates 1: 654mil

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 475mil

Pirates 2: Over 1bil

Pirates 3:963mil

Alice in Wonderland: Over 1bil

Pirates 4: Over 1bil

Now he has his flops like any other actor and Rango didn't do great (245mil wasn't great for the budget it had) but that was animated so people couldn't see him. Still it was a well liked and creative film that won an Oscar. He's gold in these types of films so I don't see why that would change this quickly. If it's decent I could see it doing well for a Western domestically but not making back it's budget. Overseas, even with it being a Western, I'd be surprise it did less than 250mil with that track record. They need to play it up as more of an adventure film than a Western though because overseas audiences really do not care about Westerns.

As for my personal opinion, I'm not jumping out of my chair but I like Depp, Hammer and Verbinski so I remain fairly optimistic. I'm waiting for a trailer to fully decide.

Maybe because, in the 79 years since the Lone Ranger and Tonto were created....Tonto has been shown as a Native American that can walk into any western town in the 1880's and not get shot on sight, and the lone Ranger has never been portrayed as Wyatt Earp in a mask.

^ When this girl has something good to say about a movie, you KNOW it's worth a glance. Either that, or the four horsemen have been spotted somewhere in the vicinity.

The reason I'm so looking forward to this is because the Pirates crew is attached. They brought the popularity of pirates back so hopefully what they did for pirates with POTC they do for westerns with this film. Plus, Elliot and Rossio wrote Mask of Zorro. Both the first Pirates and Zorro had a great, simple and enjoyable action adventure story. Hopefully they keep true to that spirit, but has Verbinski's voice and is something unique in itself.

It's apparently going to be a colossal Western. Part of the reason I'm excited for it. Could be a GOOD version of WILD WILD WEST.

The Cherokee that he claims to be a part of... that keep excellent records that his family is not in.

Ok, but based on what?

Where's the actual proof of that?

Oh my goodness are you guys taking it overboard.:oldrazz:

I haven't seen one movie I've hated this year. I liked The Grey, Chronicle, Safe House, Contraband and I even gave John Carter a decent review on it's thread (6.5/10). I just hated it's marketing and complained too much about it.

I plan on seeing Silent House on Sunday, if I finish my essay for class on Saturday.

Depp should go on WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE and settle this once and for all.:woot:

In the total LACK of proof on Depp's part. If Depp's family was Cherokee, there would be proof of it in the Baker rolls. That's the best census out of *many* rolls that Cherokees use to prove authentic blood quantum. You have to show at least 1/16 blood quantum and be on one of the established rolls from the late 19th and early 20th centuries to be a member of one of the three officially recognized tribes of Cherokee.

Depp's great-grandmother who was a supposed "Cherokee princess" (which is a totally mythological concept dreamed up by white people) has *not* been found on any of the established rolls. Therefore, Johnny Depp is about as Cherokee as Rutger Hauer.

I knew they werent going to go with the simple head band look for Tonto

He's never claimed to be a member of the tribe, though, as far as I know. He's just claimed he's part Cherokee.

Ok...here's what I'm getting at. Not found by who?

Who embarked on the this quest to see if Johnny Depp's ancestors were on the established rolls? Who did this search that is referenced so often whenever his ancestry is brought up?

Just saying "It's not on there" doesn't hold a lot of weight. Granted, neither does Johnny Depp saying he's part Cherokee, but I'm not trying to prove that.
