The Lone Ranger

In the total LACK of proof on Depp's part. If Depp's family was Cherokee, there would be proof of it in the Baker rolls. That's the best census out of *many* rolls that Cherokees use to prove authentic blood quantum. You have to show at least 1/16 blood quantum and be on one of the established rolls from the late 19th and early 20th centuries to be a member of one of the three officially recognized tribes of Cherokee.

Depp's great-grandmother who was a supposed "Cherokee princess" (which is a totally mythological concept dreamed up by white people) has *not* been found on any of the established rolls. Therefore, Johnny Depp is about as Cherokee as Rutger Hauer.

Rutger Hauer can be whoever he wants to be...

It's apparently going to be a colossal Western. Part of the reason I'm excited for it. Could be a GOOD version of WILD WILD WEST.

So how sci fi have you heard it's going to get?

Haven't heard a thing honestly, other than the werewolves.

Maybe because, in the 79 years since the Lone Ranger and Tonto were created....Tonto has been shown as a Native American that can walk into any western town in the 1880's and not get shot on sight, and the lone Ranger has never been portrayed as Wyatt Earp in a mask.

Thankyou.......

....and re. the facepainting....I don't claim to be an expert, but i believe that Native American tribes used face painting only ceremonially, and not as an every day adornment.

Here's hoping that werewolves are not the film's rationale for silver bullets.

They've scrapped the werewolves but apparently according to Hammer there was never an intention for the werewolves to appear at all, same goes for the Wendigos and shape shifters but I don't think we can't believe straight away. A scene with supernatural coyotes was cut out when they scaled down the budget according to Bruckheimer so it wouldn't be far-fetch if there was an intention to add more supernatural elements. They only thing Hammer confirmed that's slightly supernatural in the movie will be Native American mysticism.

But it was never stated that Depp will wear the makeup all the time. Just like when Reid puts on the mask to become the LR, I think Tonto will don the Warpaint as a persona when in hero mode.

Whatever it is...it's cg heavy. They're spending fat bones on this and cg ain't cheap.

I'd have preferred Wendigos to Coyotes but I'm not intrigued by what that scene would have entailed, making it costly enough to be cut for budgetary reasons.

If they took out all the supernatural elements from the movie, how come it still costs 200 million to make? Is Depp really making so much money that they'd have to have such a ridiculous budget for a Western?

i dont think Depp will always have the fae paint. and i bet my life he will not have the whole movie the bird on the the head

....hence, why I think it's possible that Tonto won't be sporting that look throughout the movie. It could be the same with The Lone Ranger, as Arnie Hammer stated in the Access Hollywood interview that he won't be always in the "same gear".

I'll wait and see how a trailer fares. At this point, I still have a neutral view of this film. I share some of the concerns of C. Lee.

I think it's the overall scale of the set-pieces, especially the train crash set piece, which it's still in the movie.

$30 million of the budget was going to directly to Depp, Bruckheimer and Verbinski before filming but if I'm not mistaken they've signed on a deferment, so they'll get the money at some point down the line when Disney recoups, also besides scaling down a bit, Bruckheimer put up some money for the movie.

Perhaps the "heavy" supernatural elements were removed (werewolves) and replaced with "lite" amounts of supernatural elements like (something that would cost a whack load of money.)

I think that everybody should have a somewhat neutral view because we have only seen one picture.

That must be a hell of a train crash sequence they have planned.

Like my sister mentioned, I was just afraid that Hammer was going to be too young for the role but so far he looks just fine.

There is no hero mode / dual identity switch thing going on here.
After surviving the ambush and slaughter of his fellow Texas Rangers, John Reid becomes The Lone Ranger, forever burying his former identity, and Tonto is Tonto prior to and after nursing Reid back to health.

It's rumored to be "the greatest train sequence ever", whether it is remains to be seen but they might keep something else up their sleeves or it could be because there's a lot of spectacle Verbinski wanted to put in order to top Pirates 3, isn't that one still one of the most expensive projects made? I don't know for sure but it'll be interesting to see if all the troubles the movie has will be worth it in the end.

It doesn't matter. Nothing says he wears the makeup throughout the entire movie. And Tonto probably doesnt need another identity but I'm sure he'll wear the makeup as Warpaint for certain scenes.

The mask looks so weird though, like it's made of rubber or something. I hope he ditches it early in the movie or never wears it at all.

As much as I laughed at Depp in the photo, it was just his expression and the make up that made me laugh. I'll wait to see it in context. I'm sure the Tonto look will grow on me though. And Hammer looks better than I thought as The Lone Ranger. I have no problems with the costume. It looks pretty damn cool actually.

True enough, but that makes it an odd inclusion in the first public photo. Applying the same reasoning.....Does the Ranger only wear the mask in certain scenes?

I laughed too. My sister and I love Depp so we found Tonto's look very amusing. We liked the absurdity of it all. Well I did once I thought about it.

No matter how bad Depp's movies get I almost always still go to see them and I still love him.:hrt: That's just me, though.
