I've not been following this film. I've become a little tired of Depp doing what he keeps doing. I do like the guy but I heard something the other day I agree with. I was sat in the cinema waiting for Gatsby to come on and during the trailer for The Lone Ranger the girl behind me said 'It's Jack Sparrow dressed up as an Indian.' I've pretty much felt like that with most of his roles of late. A parody. Even as Jack Sparrow. Gone are the days where you get his quirky performances within a character like Secret Window or From Hell. I know they're not the most revered films, but they stand out as good performances. I don't have any anticipation for this film. Depp's overplayed his hand for me, and I don't enjoy saying it.

I hate to admit it, but yes, Depp's overplayed his hand.

I agree as well. His roles used to be quirky but not overbearing, now every role he plays just goes way over the top until it's just gotten monotonous and grating. Tonto was NOT a quirky weird character but that's how Depp seems to be playing him, and for no other reason than, well, he's Johnny Depp and every character he plays has to be a weirdo.

To be fair, Tonto would be pretty damn boring if played straight. Lone Ranger should be played straight. What worked in the 50s doesn't gel so well now.

A Native American walking around in a time and place when a Native American could be shot just for being a Native American....and then him wearing guns and fighting white men and hunting and catching criminals......doesn't sound boring to me. Unfortuantly, the producers listened to stuff like what you said...and went, Hmmmmm.....let's put a bird on his head and paint up his face...that isn't boring.

Only we've seen it a trillion times since the 1950s. You realize that Lone Ranger was never an actual accurate portrayal of life in the west. It was a "cartoon" for kids.

Fortunately, the producers listened to stuff like what you said...and went, Hmmmmm.....let's put a bird on his head and paint up his face...that isn't boring.

Glad you agree.

I've been watching and reading the LONE RANGER since around 1962....so I know what it is about....and it being the TONTO AND SOME GUY IN A MASK show was never it.

Glad you agree.

Actually....you misquoted me. You changed what I said...so no, I do not agree.

That seals it: I want Depp to play Kato in Green Hornet 2. His performance will blow Mickey Rooney's Mr. Yuminoshi out of the water. :oldrazz:

Transcendence looks to be his rebirth though.

I still cant believe the movie cost 250M to make.

Maybe the movie will be a big hit and make up its budget, but I sincerely doubt it.

I wish WB didnt decide to try and make another tentpole franchise with the Lone Ranger and went with a more modest approach.

dont forget that the paychecks are also in the budget. why IM3 and Avengers are so expensive.

I believe in most cases salary's aren't included in the listed production budget.

I know RDJ made $50 million from the avengers but i believe most of that is from gross profit percentages he received.

TASM and the avengers apparently had around the same production budget but i'm positive the main cast of TASM was being paid in pennies comparatively.

My understanding is that the budget ended up so high mainly because they built as much stuff practically as they could (as opposed to relying heavily on CGI). The town I believe they built, they built a stretch of railroad track (a couple miles long?) and they built their own stream train so that they could have as much control over it/do what they wanted with it as possible (because, let's face it, any historical railroad or private owner of a period steam train is going to be hesitant about any explosions near or around the train or things like that) <--- I think it was probably building the train that contributed the most to the budget out of those. I also heard that delays in filming due to wind/dust storms meant more money had to be spent (I'm assuming because permits to film in various locations might have needed to be extended?). Just what I've heard though so feel free to take it worth a grain of salt.

Personally, as I've said before, I'm looking forward to it and my family already has tickets to see it July 4th first showing of the morning. I can't wait :)

Did people complain this much about the whole "main character gets second billing" thing when Batman 89 came out?

You gotta admit, its refreshing to see Johnny Depp playing a quirky guy with his face painted white, along side Helena Bonham Carter WITHOUT Tim Burton directing.

Yes.....and they complained about Keaton playing Batman.

No one knows the answer to this, back then a "mobile" phone the size of a brick was considered cutting edge and nerds had no voice.

To be fair, if he was cast today, the online response to a primarily comedic actor being cast as Batman would be so much worse and so horrific that I'd probably leave the Hype for a few weeks. Just to avoid the riots.

Which just goes to show, nerds don't know everything (see also Daniel Craig announced as Bond).
