So potentially come January, I am looking at anywhere from a $.17 to $1.00 raise per hour

Hopefully the pay rise is more the dollar and less the 17 cents. Hell, set aside the extra cash and go for an overseas holiday next year.

I cannot carry your burden of my betrayal up the slopes of the deathmatches, Mr Reek, but I can carry you

that would be amazing

i've actually been saving of sorts since january 1st. for the last 3-4 years, ive been keeping all my silver coins change in a jar and i don't touch it until dec 31st of that year. whatever i've accumulated i use to treat myself to something. it's usually about $160-200 and this year i've been saving up with plans to take a trip to NYC.

going to New York is one of my bucket list things, and something i'd really like to cross off in the next year or two

I'd love to see NYC some time too. I really hope you get to go there sometime. Are there other places you've travelled to? I'd be especially fascinated to see how you did it with $200 in change.

Just finished watching Batman: Return of the Caped Crusader

Holy satisfying pic, what a good film.

I live in NYC, so I suppose it's a familiarity breeds contempt thing but... I don't quite get the fascination many have with it. Don't get me wrong, I love my hometown and admit to it's various unique facets but it's a lot less unique than it used to be let's just say, for better or worse. The tourist stuff one would do in NYC is not to dissimilar to what you would do in any other big city. Manhattan especially is simply turning into an island for the rich and their scions whom they send to educate here, often from out of town. New Granted that's part of the key to the City. People come from all over, always have and always will but as stated more and more it's not the average citizen coming to live there but the wealthy. The New York City of true diversity as well as places that uphold certain traditions and communities from the past is to be found across the bridges and tunnels in Brooklyn, The Bronx and Queens, but due to NYC in the media as it's usually been portrayed, these places don't have the iconic luster of Manhattan.

NYC is my definition of the "big city" with all the skyscrapers and busyness and uses for location in decades of cinema.

That's why Manhattan is so iconic. The truth is though that the people that make Manhattan work, the everyday New Yorkers that do all the tasks necessary to make it what it is actually don't live on the island that most people take for "NYC". But as I said, Brooklyn, Queens ect. don't have the cultural cache' that the island does.

haha i dont think i'd be able to fund my whole trip with $200, but it's a good start.
there is a bus that leaves from here to NY and is $40-45 each way. i planned on leaving around midnight, sleeping on the bus and getting there about 7-8am. if i recall, it drops you off in Port Authority, near Times Square. i'd basically just spend the day taking it all in and take a very late bus home.

a friend of mine just moved up there when she got a teaching job, so later down the line i wouldn't mind visiting for a few days and staying with her.

as for traveling, i've gone to DC but it's been a while. i'd like to go again. Gettysburg about 10 years ago was very interesting and since i took the trip with my father and bunch of his platoon from Vietnam, it was a lot more significant for me due to the history of the area, as well as experiencing this side of my father's life that he doesn't talk much about but has impacted him significantly made it extra enjoyable. he was drafted to Vietnam right out of high school, and in the mid 1990's, a bunch of his old troops hunted him down and came up to see him and visit a few days. every 2 or 3 years the brigade (i really hope i'm not using the wrong military terms) meet up in different cities.

i'm going to Myrtle Beach next month for a college showcase for the kids i coach, but it wont be much in the ways of sight seeing, but it's travelling.

i'm probably a geek, but i really want to go there to see a show on Broadway. My bucket list item actually reads as "to see a show in NYC on Broadway (probably Les Miz or Wicked)"

I enjoy visiting NYC whenever I can (usually make it out there about every other year or so to see a Broadway show or two), but I'll be honest, I get more of that big city "awe factor" from Chicago. I think the magnificent architecture plays a part. Not that NYC doesn't have some fantastic architecture itself, but for some reason I just find something particularly epic about Chicago.

When I was in High School I was on the Scholastic Scrimmage team and we qualified for a shot at the nationals which were held in Chicago. We stayed at I think Lake Forrest and during the day we went out to the city. This was the mid 90's. Chicago had iconic value for my buddies and I since we worshiped FERRIS BUELLER. I loved the Field Museum.

beauty and the beast is playing down here next week. you should come down!

honestly, the Chrysler has some pretty great shows coming next year. because of all the positive posts about it in the Musical Theatre thread, i wanna see Pippin next year, even if i have to go by myself.

i'm seeing Rent next month too

Well Spidey's always been from Queens but this Cap Brooklyn thing is really just from the film. Back in the day, before Chris Evans, he was supposed to be from the West Side of Manhattan, if I am remembering it correctly. Remember, Kirby and Simon who created Cap were poor kids from Manhattan.

Hmm, never knew that, makes sense with those two being from Manhattan indeed.

Ha, nice! It's funny, I never realized just HOW MUCH that city had been used in movies/TV until I finally visited there for the first time and just started recognizing the buildings/landmarks in everything.

And yeah, it's got iconic value for me too because the first time I visited there was almost 10 years ago now, when they were filming The Dark Knight and we ended up rather unexpectedly stalking the set for a couple of days. It was so much fun and actually turned out to be a great way to explore the city and see the less tourist-y parts.
