I doubt it would be Norman or Richard simply because they are being played by different actors. Remember, we know that Michael Massee is the man in the shadows.
has it been confirmed that Michael Massee is still playing the man in the shadows?

I assumed he was more of a place holder in the first movie

Why would he be a placeholder?

And yes, Michael Massee is still playing The Man In The Shadows.

I see a mix of comic book characters rolled into one for this guy. He'll be a kingpin of crime, a master planner and The Gentlemen all rolled into one. I remember the recent discussion on these forums about plot devices, and following that idea, I forsee him as a plot device to get the ball rolling with Oscorp purposefully creating supervillains. That makes perfect sense to me, especially given that the alternative is having a sudden influx of random men and women continuously being involved in random accidents that gift them with superpowers. In Marc's cinematic universe, he's just the guy who gathers all the would-be supervillains and grants them access to Oscorp tech, to further the organization's goals.

I'm so conflicted - I love the random and varied events responsible for creating Spidey's villains, but I don't see that working if we are to have a sinister 6 by the third or forth installment.

^yes, it would be ironic if after all the speculation and debate over who he is, if he turned out to just be an original(made up for the movie) character, or a crossbreed of multi characters

Why would he be a placeholder?

And yes, Michael Massee is still playing The Man In The Shadows.
if they just didn't cast the character, yet...

like how they was that rumor that it was Norm, but then they cast someone else as Norm

I know Michael is a real actor, but, the role called for most then just your typical stand in/stunt man

I really disagree with the theories floating about that Massee is really Osborn. You don't waste an Oscar winner like Cooper just to pull a rabbit out of the hat trick that isn't even remotely interesting in the first place. When we saw it was Massee in the shadows, of course we speculated it was Norman, but now we know who has been cast. The problem is, people can't let go. They've ignored the cast list, have already made up their minds that Massee is Osborn and try to come up with impossible scenarios to back that up

He is definitely not Norman...

At this point, I want that tattooed on my face, and every time I hear someone say he is, just appear on their screen like that annoying paperclip repeatedly yelling 'no he isn't!' until they log off in annoyance lol

Before Chris Cooper was cast, I seriously believed that Michael Massee was Norman Osborn. I mean look at him:

But now with Chris Cooper, I see no reason to believe this anymore.

In any case, I'm glad he's got a role in a franchise this big. I can only imagine how tough its been for him since The Crow. He deserves it

I agree. Its really not fair since that incident was not his fault at all!

how is suggesting that they would recast the role, an impossible scenario?

yes, we saw Massee as, the man in the shadows, I assumed that they tried to hide his appearance in the shadows, so, that it could be anyone... an they could recast latter if needed

at the time we didn't know yet what role/or how big of a role, this mysterious figure would play

Well the Man in the Shadows is back, so I think Michael Massee was chosen for a reason.

This does NOT look like Cooper. Wish they wouldn't have incorporated that scene.

Plot twist: Norman Osborn killed Uncle Ben.

Because there are still people who believe Massee is Osborn, even though Cooper has not only publically stated that he in fact is, the official cast list shows Cooper as Osborn. When people have decided that Massee is Osborn, they're adopting a top down approach and only creating theories to back that up, rather than looking at the facts and drawing logical conclusions. We have people saying that ;Mysterio and/ or The Chameleon are being used to convince the audience that Cooper is Osborn when in fact it's Massee all along. Highly convoluted and highly contrived if you ask me. Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word 'impossible' - It's just that I find it so hard to believe

Its funny but I always sort of thought it looked like Massee a little bit. But w/e, its an ambiguous silhouette that could pretty much be anyone… I really like that it was put into the movie.

Norman Osborn's presence was felt throughout the whole film IMO.

The silhouette walking past the Doc Ock tentacles is clearly Massee.

Becoming Spider-Man
Being Spider-Man
Consequences of being Spider-Man

Basically the three main themes they seem to be going after.

I wish Orci and Kurtzman wrote the first film.

Michael Massee is largely a voice and tv actor, it's very likely he could have been a placeholder for Norman who they knew could deliver a creepy performance with his voice alone.

Add to the fact that they originally wanted Cooper to play Norman/GG in SM1 but he was unable to do so because of scheduling conflicts. And I doubt they'd take the oppotunity of finally having him available to play the part, only to pass the role onto someone else. What a waste. The timing works out to where it's like "Yes! We've got Cooper cast as Norman. Ok, now let's have him be dead and Massee is really Osborn!" Um, no. I don't buy it.
