Marvel Films The Marvel Studios News and Discussion Thread

Not sure who I’d recast as Kang, but it seems a given at this point. Unless Marvel diverts from the Kang storyline all together but that doesn’t seem likely to me.

I like Corey Hawkins; I could see him doing well in the role. Having just watched The Creator, I wouldn’t mind seeing John David Washington’s take on the conqueror.

Just bumping my choices for the new page
Boyega is very not intimidating. And imo isn't the greatest actor. He's not bad at all just kinda eh to me.

I would say go with Damson Idris (Snowfall)

or

Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight).

Both criminally underused. Even considering anti black biases I don't get why these guys don't get major roles outside of streaming/TV. Rhodes is already ripped too so that works.

Or outside the normal suggestion: Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton)

He's gone now , and while fans may still want to debate the verdict and charges , the issue is over as far as Iger and Marvel are concerned .

My guess is that Marvel/ Disney have been looking at other actors despite public pronouncements .

So, we'll have to see what happens next.

I’m with you. Hopefully he gets his shot soon. If not with Marvel then maybe with Gunn’s DC. He’d be a solid GL imo.
Honestly I don't even care much about the superhero movie roles. Just roles in general. He had the mediocre Mike Tyson HULU thing. Which he was good in but was ultimately mediocre overall. But he barely gets any starring roles and is regulated to being a sidekick

He was pretty impressive in Moonlight, but that was awhile ago in Hollywood time.

Yeah and since then he mostly got regulated to sidekick roles.

TBH: I always wondered if it was because he played gay in his first major role

I wouldnt mind if they recast with Mahershala Ali. I know he was cast in Blade but that hasnt started production yet and was recently delayed anyway. Its the time to make the swap now if Marvel felt he could be up to it

Really hoping they give another black actor a chance at this role than jump ship to Doom or something.

Yahya or Trevante would be my top choices.

Either way, I’ll expect we’ll know very soon.

Recasting is definitely the best option. Simply writing the character out of the story would mean Kang remains permanently associated with Majors. Whereas if they recast him for the big Avengers movie, and if the new actor is able to make a strong enough impression with viewers, the new actor could easily usurp Major's as the main face of Kang in the public consciousness.

At this point, I just don't trust Marvel to make the right move after all their missteps the past couple years. They just haven't had much consistency in the projects for the past couple years because they've been chasing trends and producing way too much content with little quality control/supervision. That has alienated and/or bored long-time fans and friendly critics while not attracting the new fans they hoped they'd reach.

I guess it helps that we haven't seen him as Blade yet either and only heard his voice.

The dude's agency dropped him. None of the big studios are gonna touch him with a ten foot pole.
Right now, certainly not. A few years from now? Who knows. Also an actor can do projects outside of the big studios.

I wouldn’t be too worried for him either look at Will Smith dude publicly assaulted a guy and he still has projects lined up

The Oscar slap aside, Smith would be such a horrible choice for Kang since he‘s only capable of playing the same rotation of characters we’ve seen for decades. What I don’t get is why Marvel didn’t go the Spider-Man route and have different actors play the character to really lean in on the “multiversal“ aspect.

That said, get Abdul-Mateen II if the Wonder Man series is canceled.

IMO the multiverse aspect hits better when the characters look the same. It feels like it’s the same character but slightly different. When it’s different actors, it just feels like different characters as was the case in Loki for the variants not played by Hiddleston

I think they should go with a smaller name for Kang. I can't see a big star wanting to be seen as a "replacement" over their first choice Majors.

What if they cast different actors as different Kang variants? Much like what happened with that film when Heath Ledger died.
