Marvel Films The Marvel Studios News and Discussion Thread

Considering how Captain America 4 and Thunderbolts both underperformed, how well will the Fantastic Four do at the box office? I think Marvel killed the Golden Goose.

Also, James Gunn has a theory on why Marvel movies are failing:

Sounds Fanta$tic.

It would make sense with them wanting to separate the movies and TV. But I think it also means those could be on the chopping block.

Nova should be a movie.

Strange Academy is a bit unnecessary when they could just do another Dr. Strange film.

Strange Academy seems like a show unless you're going to make it a proper Doctor Strange movie. Nova being a movie is good though

I wonder how long we are going to see him again in another MCU project. Its hard to get excited considering Sharon Carter, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Man-Thing, Hercules, Starfox, Clea, the Eternals and other characters I'm forgetting still haven't returned for another appearance.

They don't need recast Steve and Tony anytime soon! Not even in the late 2020s.

Well they're going after Secret Wars according to Kevin Feige. Which makes sense because the MCU needs Steve Rogers and Tony Stark, the replacements aren't cutting it. They are the pillars of the Marvel Comics.

The X-Men, the Fantastic 4, Spider-Man and whoever left post-Secret Wars should keep them busy for 2028 and 2029 which is just two years away from 2030s. I don't think they need to release 6 movies in that timeframe, as there should be a palette cleanser, after Secret Wars comes out just few weeks before 2028.

I guess 1 to 2 movies in 2028 which should include the X-Men reboot, a sequel for Shang-Chi or Fantastic 4, then a Blade reboot/Spider-Man 5 in 2029.

After Secret Wars doesn't tell us when though. Could be immediately, could be years. We really don't know yet

I get the sense that Secret Wars will end with a Tony-style sacrifice. Only it’ll be most if not all the multiversal OGs dying to protect Franklin so he can remake the MCU. And that’s how they’ll explain the recasting and old actors popping up in new roles. Like anyone who dies can’t come back exactly the same. I also think he’ll redo the universe with F4’s aesthetic. Would make for a nice visual marker for the reset.

F4, Spider-Man, and the new X-Men will serve as the pillars of the reset MCU. Characters like Tony and Steve will be more supporting roles to start at least.

Just my guess.

Might be working towards a Heroes Reborn like situation

It makes sense with them making such a big deal of the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and Spider-Man and how important they’re going to be going forward. And by making them such a focus after the reset and putting the characters you mentioned in the background initially, it makes the recasting of legacy characters a bit easier to swallow. I imagine it will be a bit of a gradual thing, where we see each new version of these characters popping up in certain projects and getting glimpses of what this new soft-rebooted MCU looks like post Secret Wars.

Also, with a reset, it gives audiences a new jumping on point and not have to go back and watch 50+ projects to know what’s going on. It’s kind of like when comic books do a new issue #1 to attract new readers who don’t want to dive into years and years of comic book lore and history. No need, you just start right here. And, if you want to go back and watch some of them out of curiosity, they’re still there for you to check out.

The Russo Brothers a few months ago calling Doomsday and Secret Wars “a beginning” makes a lot more sense with that context in mind. It’s quite literally a refresh and establishing of a new status quo for this cinematic universe.
