Marvel Films The Marvel Studios News and Discussion Thread

Oh.

Wall Street Journal - Disney Wanted More From Marvel. Now It Wants Less. (May 2, 2025)

The superhero studio is cutting back TV production and fixing its film slate after fans lost the plot

The head of Marvel Studios told colleagues recently that watching all the comic-book giant’s new TV shows and films had started to feel more like homework than entertainment.

The problem, Kevin Feige acknowledged, is that in an effort to satisfy parent company Disney’s hunger for content on its new streaming service, the studio behind “The Avengers” churned out too many movies and shows with interconnected stories.

The deluge of material from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, on Disney+ overwhelmed and eventually alienated viewers. It also stretched Feige and his team’s resources thin, diluting the quality of their output. Marvel’s box-office sales, streaming popularity and formerly untouchable position in pop culture suffered.
Now, Feige is leading an internal overhaul aimed at getting the studio back on track. Marvel is making fewer TV shows, with stand-alone stories that don’t require prior knowledge of the MCU.

That's boring. :( Certainly isn't going to inspire people to watch.
I hope they just releases these shows once a year. But no "special appearances" means we are back in that Marvel movie/tv divide in the 2010s.

These era of Marvel Studios shows, definitely didn't work out for them.

The fear now seems to be if major folks show up on TV fans will think they need to watch TV to enjoy the movie. And since they won't do the TV "homework" they will just skip the movie. With Spider-Man becoming a guy in a suit on Daredevil: Born Again it felt like going back to the Netflix days of "the green guy" and "the guy with a hammer."

Doing a TV homework sounds bad. Outside Marvel, I don't watch shows for LOTR, Star Wars (except for the first season of Mandolorian), Monsterverse and DC.

But they really have overdid releasing shows in 2021 and 2022, to the point, the audience quickly get tired investing in MCU shows. The Marvels flopping in 2023, is a big example, Rambeau/Kamala appearing in the Disney+ shows first didn't boost interest for The Marvels. Brie Larson also made a special appearance in that show.

He cited "getting the tesseract" as why the movies are failing, but The Avengers was massively successful and when the MCU was taking off in popularity.
He doesn't mean literally getting the tesseract. He is saying they're all the same movie. I dont agree with him entirely, but there are a lot that follow a same basic template

Yeah, I believe the "getting the Tesseract" means that (most) of the movies chase the mcguffin so badly that they tend to forget their characters. I mostly agree. The best movies are the ones built around emotion.

Do you want to see them in the MCU?

Do you want to see them in the MCU?
