Homecoming The Mary-Jane Casting Poll - Part 3

MJ would never dress like that. And if she somehow was MJ, she'd be an "In Name Only" type deal.

Is Liz "In Name Only" too? Since she won't exactly look like this in the movie.

Yeah, that's what I pointed out some time ago that it seems like people are very picky-choosey with characters being different from comic to screen or cartoon to screen or what-have-you.

If Liz, Betty, Gwen, Felicia, etc. are all capable of being different (all of 'em being brought up at least once on these forums), why can't MJ? Some argued she needs to be a natural redhead but her character isn't exactly defined by that as some would claim.

Either way, Zendaya is Michelle and while I'd wish it was a codename, that's what we have going forward. :oldrazz:

Minus her race, Laura looks and gives off pretty much the same vibes as that picture wheras with Zendaya, she looks nothing like MJ. And other incarnations of Liz HAVE been non-white by the way, but that's beside the point.

Again, Zendaya's character is not Mary Jane, she's a completely New character created specifically for this movie.

Technically Michelle isn't completely original. She's based on a comic character called Michelle whom I believe was Peter's roomate in the adult comics.

Dunst looked nothing like MJ either, I think at this point we should know better that Marvel and Sony don't seem to care all that much about how the supporting cast looks. I'm still surprised they chose Emma Stone for Gwen. I'm not sure Zendaya plays an original character when she was cast right after Tom. That indicates her character is of big priority and can't just be some random girl we've never seen before.

We're only assuming that, we don't know

Say what you want about her acting but she looked the part in Spider-Man 1.

Unfortunately they changed her hair colour in the sequels.

"She wasn't hot enough!!!!" :o

Whatever. Every teenage boy and his father wanted Dunst when watching that movie for the first time back in 2002.

Nonsense. I just didn't think she was a good choice at first. And people said that crap about Woodley, not about Dunst. I had no problem with Shailene.

Well, I was 15 when that movie came out and she wasn't exactly a wet dream of mine, though I did find her attractive. Again, her looks have nothing to do with it, I simply wasn't a fan of the casting. I remember I was like "The Bring it On chick?" And I wasn't a fan of that movie. I think there were also rumors about Rachael Leigh Cook, who I was a huge fan of back then. So I didn't root for Dunst initially, but I changed my mind about her in time. Which is weird I guess because a lot of people seem to not like her much in the sequels, while to me she was really good in SM2.

I just wasn't a fan of her casting at the time. And I don't think she is a bad actress at all, Raimi just didn't write MJ well for her to showcase her talent.

Yeah well you said she looked nothing like MJ. Nothing about how she was written.

Like I said before, I have no problem with her looks. There was something "off" about that casting to me at the time, which I changed my mind about in time.

Dunst was too ordinary looking for me. I never found her that sexually attractive. However I can always appreciate this scene:

MJ needs to have firey red hair and hour glass figure. A firm plump ass and perky breast that stay up bra or no bra. :o

then they definitely need to save her for the sequels, when the character are all older (maybe even wait til the collage years) cause most the characters/actresses in this are in like the 15-17 age range

I don't wanna be watching a barely legal teenage girl that fits that description

In my opinion, Kirsten Dunst (in Spider-Man 1, anyway) was better looking than most of the potential casting choices who've been brought up in the Homecoming age group.

Dunst looked just fine as Mary Jane. It's the characterization that was off.

Anyway, I'm hoping MJ has already been cast and that we'll get the classic Jackpot introduction in this film. Though it'll be difficult to pull off with beauties like Laura and Zendaya. MJ has some tough competition.

Ha. I've actually seen serious comments like this elsewhere. It's disgusting. Seems like some just want a lifesive cardboard cutout of a 90s era Erik Larson illustration (every female was drawn like a blow up doll in the 90s)

It wasn't just the characterization, Dunst was just completely wrong for the role.

In the movies, MJ was written as Peter's dream girl, the kind of girl, every guy wanted to be with but there was nothing about Kirsten's performance/portrayal, that even remotely showed why Peter was so in love with her.

She was so cold, unlikeable and obnoxious.

Honestly, the bar has been set so low for MJ, that creating a successful cinematic version "should" be relatively easy.

Say hi to Todd McFarlane.

Now, of course she doesn't need to look like this, but when you think about it, wasn't she created with the idea to give readers the notion that she was out of Peter's league? Her looks are, for better or worse, an integral part of her character. Like I said, Dunst looked fine, so did Woodley, and if Z is playing her, I'm totally cool with her, but while some fans tend to go overboard in their "MJ has to be hot" argument, I don't think it's right to just boil it down to a disgusting pig attitude. Stan Lee deliberately created the character to look and act that way.

^ That was the worst version of Mary Jane in the comics. Not only did Todd McFarlane get rid of her trademark straight hair and bangs, but with this curly hair she had she looked like a completely different character. It's like Peter hired a hooker for a while to pass the time away.

I agree, I get it was the late 80s or early 90s, but that curly hair was terrible. Both of them looked weird to be honest.

And do I need to mention the dialogue? "Yo, homeboy, I said joke's over." Yet for some reason, Todd's run was extremely popular.

Kirsten was fine in the first movie but it was the sequels where her character started going downhill. I don't know why Raimi made her so unlikable.

And I thought she was very attractive in the first and second movie.

If Peter weren't in his Spidey suit, that almost looks like 90s Scott Summers flirting with Jean Grey. Just give him a pair of ruby sunglasses now. :o
