I know that I've complained about Zendaya possibly being MJ and how I'd prefer if they don't go that route.

however, I do admit, the 1st gif especially does give off an MJ vibe.

and if she is indeed MJ, then the hair color in the 1st gif is about right. maybe it could be a bit redder, but it doesn't look unnatural in that gif.

I'm all for her being MJ... but I'm also all fir her having a slight reddy tinge to her, more than the above gif.

Well MJ has always been white not that I would have a problem with a biracial MJ but at the same time MJ's character has always been white so why change it now?

I am not a racist by any means I am African American myself so to see a black MJ I really wouldn't have a problem with it but I am sure other people would

^^ yeah. a bit more red would be fine. but too red and it would look unnatural.

and that's always been my stance. I think you should try to stay as close and true to the original characters - the source material - as possible.

especially for major characters.

minor characters I'm more open to changes.

and I'm bi-racial myself, so it's not like I want an all white cast.

but changing a long established character would feel like such an unnecessary change, imo. and it's bound to cause controversy amongst some fans.

I mean, look at the Ancient One in Dr. Strange. there are some fans complaining they changed the character from an Asain male to a White woman.

it's the same thing. and I'd say MJ is far more popular mainstream than the Ancient One.

I'd like there to be the less controversy as possible.

look how divisive MOS and BvS especially turned out.

Marvel has avoided such division for the most part, and we don't need to start with Spidey. especially with Spidey's homecoming to the MCU.

Exactly my point see I am glad that someone else agrees with me about Mary Jane

Does anybody actually think Bella Thorne would be good? She certainly looks the part, but she can't act worth dirt from the stuff I've seen her in...

Bella Thorne if she could act she would actually be perfect as MJ

I'm honestly jealous of fans who just don't care about that stuff and are happy with basically any casting choices.

That'd be me. Odd time I'll dislike a choice but once I get past it, I'm good to go.

I just want the personality nailed for MJ more-so than the look (which really isn't all that important aside from the red hair because I don't expect comic-to-screen nor do I want that as much as others).

Jackman as Wolverine is the highest example of not being "accurate" in terms of look but yet pulling off Wolverine in terms of heart and embodiment, and as long as an actor would have the heart and putting their stamp on a character, I'm completely game.

Also, as I've stated before, Zendaya is mixed. :oldrazz:

she is. but if I didn't know, and I first looked at her, I wouldn't be able to tell. I certainly wouldn't think she could pass as Caucasian. and therein lies my disconnect with her (possibly) being MJ. In my mind, MJ should be Caucasian because that's how she was originally created and that's how she's always been portrayed.

Vanessa Hudgens is another former Disney star who is also mixed. I also think she's insanely beautiful. But even if she were 10 years younger, I wouldn't want her for the role of MJ either because she doesn't look the part.

If a slight change of skin tone is enough to throw you off, then fair enough I suppose.

Myself? I'd have no issue with it in the same way I had no issue with MCD as Kingpin and MBJ as Johnny Storm (it was the writing that got me there ).

I'd much rather have the personality nailed of a character 100% than the look 100% ATEOTD.

and for the record, I can't stand Jackman as Wolverine, either. total miscast, imo.

one reason why I'm sick and tired of the whole Singer X-Men universe.

And that's where you and I differ greatly. :cwink:

Same. It's why I rarely play the fancasting game.

BvS is a perfect example of getting the look "right" and failing at the characterization. I hope Marvel is more focused on capturing MJ's personality and spirit. That's what I've always wanted to see on the big screen.

personality of the character is important but looks are important too. especially when we are talking about comic book characters - which is a highly visual medium.

you have to find the right balance between personality and looks, imo. You can't have 100 % the personality but the wrong looks. Nor can you have 100 % the looks but the wrong personality.

For example, say Tom Holland bulked up and say he could portray the personality and character of Clark Kent/Superman.

would/should he be cast in that role?? No, because he doesn't have the right look for Clark/Superman, which in part has to do with his height.

Tom doesn't have the right look or height or build for Superman but has the perfect physical traits for Peter Parker and Spider-Man.

I take part in it and sometimes wish I don't when results come back. :oldrazz:

Here's hoping. Makes me think back to the TASM2 days where Woodley was cast as MJ and the outcry was that she wasn't hot enough to be MJ yet people completely dismissed whether or not she'd be the character in terms of personality and what-not. :csad:

I get that comics are a visual medium and all, but since 2000 (and earlier) we've had comic book movies that featured characters that weren't exactly page-to-screen and the results were fine, like Spider-Man (Peter and MJ), X-Men (just about all), etc. so I really don't consider it as big a deal as many do.

Then again, I didn't grow up reading comic books as I did more-so watching cartoons of my favorite heroes so maybe that has something to do with it why I'm okay with a lot of changes so long as the essence of the characters are still in tact.

Only thing I've complained about recently (but try not to over-complain about) is Tomei as Aunt May but that's just me not liking her as an actress overall. I'd be the same way had Brad Pitt portrayed Norman Osborn or something. :oldrazz:

Ah well.

Yet, by that logic, Tom doesn't really resemble any Peter Parker I've seen and yet here we are with him as Peter/Spidey.

Tobey had blue eyes as Peter Parker (whom originally has hazel IIRC) and Andrew was slightly taller than Peter Parker's comic height and yet, again, here we are (were).

It's honestly not a big deal. :oldrazz:

and we'll just have to agree to disagree. :cwink:

Gladly. :woot:

then I think we should drop this convo because otherwise we'll just be going back and forth like this:

Have to admit it'd be highly entertaining. :funny:

and speaking of Zendaya, as per the Hype Home Page news, it looks like Zendaya is one of 3 candidates for the leading role in the Battle Angel Alita adaptation.

She's onto big things, it seems. I wonder, if she is MJ or someone really central in Spider-Man, would she be able to balance these two series should she get the role in BAA?

'Cause again, all we know of her character 'Michelle' is that she'll be supporting in the first film but be important in later installments.., which does seem like a central character overall.

:hmm

:hmm

according to this site, Bella Thorne ( another name I've seen thrown around here ) is also in the running and Zendaya's commitment to Spidey and other projects may put her out of contention.

it does seem like she's being looked at and seriously considered for some big projects, and she'd be headlining Alita if she got the part.

so, maybe they are seeing something in her............

edit: and here's the site with the update:

Has anybody brought up Sasha Pieterse? She's not been in anything for awhile, so I don't know if she'll be good, but she looks the part and can act MJ-ish from what I saw in the Burning Bhodi trailer.
