So thats why the writers and creative team have that freedom regarding the prequels and future movies of this franchise.

If you listen to Bryan Singer's commentary from X2; he does mention that he purposefully played up a possible intimate connection between Mystique and Magneto.

Remember this little exchange on the XJet before the team storms Alkali Lake:

Wolverine: She's good
Magneto: You have no idea...

Not an accident--that little sexual innuendo was planned.

unless, by past love interest, you mean one not introduced in the films (as Mystique has been). In which case, disregard.

They missed a trick by not hinting that Azazel got Raven preggers, and then have her say she gave it away in this film. It would be a lovely touch.
