I'd put this below the Marvel Trilogies but ahead of the Pirates one.

Pirates I grant you got terrible in the third part. AWE was just a mess. Nowhere near CotBP, and DMC was even a lot better.

I really liked the first Matrix film, even though it had some obvious problems. The sequels were entertaining to a point, but also bloated and dripping with a sense of self-importance. I could almost see the director's looking out of the screen yelling "The stuff we're conveying is deep and important man!" even though it's all Philosophy 101.

I also felt like the action missed what was the best part of the first Matrix film, namely the sense of danger. In the first Matrix the Agents felt like a genuine threat (and you cared about the characters), when they showed up it was a HOLY **** kind of moment. When Smith confronts Morpheus he gets obliterated... he doesn't stand a chance. In "Reloaded" Morpheus almost seems to be playing with the Agent he faces on the freeway.

I really liked the first Matrix film, even though it had some obvious problems. The sequels were entertaining to a point, but also bloated and dripping with a sense of self-importance. Actually, that is one of my complaints of Reloaded. No way should Morpheous have fought an agent that well.

I love all 3 Matrix movies. The sequels get FAR too much hate. In subsequent viewings, they have only gotten better to me, and they measure up to the original imo.

The Matrix had a cool and intriguing story and made me care about the characters. It's a fantastic science-fiction movie with lots of suspense and awesome action scenes... and it's cool.

The sequels are just overblown, videogame-ish, pretentious and boring wanna-be-phylosiphical-epics, which don't really deliver. A huge letdown for me, especially since the first was a milestone in the science-fiction genre.

I think the sequels have more substance than people give them credit for. Are they pretentious? A bit, but nowhere near as pretentious as films like Superman Returns or Magnolia.

The Matrix sequels are soooo underrated....and yes most people DONT get what the brothers were showing. Its not that they're dumb but you just have to think differently. Heck, I thought I understood what the matrix sequels were about until I rewatched it then I realized how awesome they are!
The brothers created a whole entire universe and EVERY detail in the movies is important. I think the brothers worked really hard on the sequels and it sucks that they get so little credit. It like Stanley Kubrick's 2001 and blade runner...both were panned by critics when they first came out but later on people realized how awesome they were.
I give Matrix Reloaded a 9/10 and Revolutions a 9.5/10.
I still like the first the best (only cause I'm a sucker for origin stories) but the sequels are great and I'm not afraid to admit it. Hopefully years from now people will see how cool and deep these movies are.

I CANNOT believe someone actually thinks Dark City is better than the Matrix. Its a good movie...but better than the Matrix?...psshhh give me a break!

But I do hope that you rewatch the films again (together if you can) because reading about it is one thing but actually watching it and understanding it is another.
Its kind of like poetry; I can tell you what an obscure poem is trying to say but it won't be as special unless you realize it youself.

You could have supplied 1 example, that would have sufficed. Honestly, I've watched most of them more than once, obviously the 1st more than the others.

I know what they are trying to do with the sequels, I just didn't like it. I felt it to be pompous and the dialogue to be pretentious. I had a 3 month diatribe with a poster who was convinced that Pirates was an epic/deep movie. I wasn't convinced, nor am I now with the Matrix.

I understood the movie, I was never lost, I understood the symbolism in the scenes but the execution was something to be desired. I wasn't feeling it.

If you understood what the sequels were trying to say and still don't like it, thats great. It just bothers me when people dont understand what the sequels are saying and just blow them off completely, deeming them as crappy films.

I'm the kind of person that can rewatch a film many times and I like to pick up details so the matrix falls right up my alley.

Same here. I just didn't 'feel' and like the sequels. They didn't really do much for me.

thanks for the link will read it tomorrow. I liked the matrix and thought it was very clever. The other two i just thought wtf is that about. I like all the ideas and themes behind it but i think that unless you are familiar with those concepts through outside reading then you won't get all of that from the movies, partly i think because of nature of the sequels, which is action-orientated and special effect laden. Of course you'd have to watch it many times to understand the deeper levels of philosophy and concepts in them.

I haven't watched them for ages so after reading that article i think i'll view them in a more intricate manner, even though reloaded and revolutions are overblown imo.

The Matrix is one of the greatest science fiction, and action films of all-time. The sequels were wasted potential. However, they aren't as bad as everybody makes them out to be. Actually, Reloaded is a decent film. It's just that it was such a step down that it is considered so bad. Now Revolutions? That is a clear example of wasted potential at it's finest. Just about everything about it is bad, and the final fight between Neo and Smith is the definition of anti-climatic.

All in all, I am thankful for the Matrix trilogy for two reasons. The first is like I mentioned above. We received one of the greatest and revolutionary science fiction and action film of all-time. Second, we got one of my favorite villains of all-time, Smith.

I love all three Matrix movies.

I think Reloaded and Revolutions could have been directed better, mainly that they should have had some of the stuff streamlined or more symbolic to make it make more sense for the 80% of ADD people out there.

I also think that the marketing killed them more than the films them selfs. It was billed as a "popcorn summer action movie" and it should have NEVER been billed as that.

It would be like billing Transformers as a "deep intellectual adult film".

Even with the flaws of the other two films, mostly the third film, I think the Matrix Trilogy was awesome and wish that the damn TV show would be made!

There is nothing wrong with how you view these films. However, that doesn't mean that people out there have ADD, or didn't "truly understand" the films. Now this is not just directed at you, but for most of the people out there that have this logic for many films that they enjoy that isn't well liked by everyone else. It doesn't matter what underlying meanings are in movies, or what the director(s) or writer has a double meaning for, if a movie is not well received, does it matter? I mean, Jason X's director could have meant the film to be a deep emotional part of himself and his understanding of a man who is different, misunderstood, and persecuted, but if the film's general reception is crappy, does it really matter to everyone else? If you found some hidden meaning or symbolism in the film that magnified how much you liked the film, good for you, but just because that happened to you does not mean that other people didn't understand.

...that's just me.

That article made me appreciate those two films a lot more.
And yes at first I didn't get a damn thing that was going on in the sequels. I was left with so many questions that I felt were unanswered but the answers are in the movies...you might have to do a little digging but theyre there.

Dude hes right though. The general audience DOES have a short attention span. Thats why summer blockbusters make amazing BO numbers and great oscar and golden globe nominated films don't.
Plus people didn't understand the sequels. On SHH most people seem to understand the sequels perfectly fine but outside of here a lot of people were confused and lost at Matrix Reloaded.

yeah, I loved the first Matrix movie, and initially thought the sequels sucked. Now, after re-watching them a couple times, and reading those essays (found them months ago, really helped me understand the sequels) I say Reloaded was decent. Revolutions still is the worst of the three, but not as bad as I thought after seeing it the first time.

YEAH! 80% of people have ADD and can't grasp a simple film!

In fanboy words that equates to you saying that you and the "chosen" few, like your friends and other internet dwellers are the only ones who can get stuff that's "deep".

Only problem is the Matrix films weren't that deep.

The first movie was the best,I look at the second and third films being a cashing in on the franchise and not really bringing anything new. If anything the story from the first was changed or dragged on.
