Given how the sequels weren't even that great, the twisted part of me is weirdly curious to see how they think that they can pull this off?

Baaaaaad idea for a reboot. I might be into an in continuity sequel that brings back many of the original characters/actors though. Keanu is awesome as John Wick, it'd be stupid not to use him as Neo again. Maybe Neo is some kind of literal god now. Maybe the machines and the humans peace has ended for some reason. Maybe they have a program running for the machines where Trinity is an agent! There are ways this could work but they need the W sisters and they need that original cast.

Agreed.

So many talented writers around the globe with so many awesome ideas. So many great directors that would gladly take the material and make a great film out of it. Just do something new. There's zero chance you can top the original Matrix. Literally zero. Like there's only one The Dark Knight and even Nolan was not able to top that. There's only one Memento. And there's only one Matrix. I myself love the whole Trilogy. I think Agent Smith is, from the philosophical standpoint, possibly the best villain ever put on the screen, or at least in 3 top ever. You cannot top this.

Do something fresh. It seems there could be a boom of cyberpunk genre. GitS, BR 2049. So maybe that's why they want to reboot this. But it's silly idea. Just make a Shadowrun film or something like that which is already established and has tons and tons of existing material you can use if you don't want to make something from scratch. Take Shadowrun and you can have awesome guns and magic action in there and social commentary on racism and corporations and corrupted law enforcers and being a wage slave and philosophical disputations about what it means to be a human and all that cyberpunk jazz. You don't have to cannibalize Matrix.

Considering how much Matrix took from Ghost in the Shell and Inception from Satoshi Kon's Paprika, my guess is that all hollywood needs is to keep stealing from anime.

The Oracle heavily implies that Neo might not be gone for good at the end of Revolutions.

Though I think that the best chance for success that this movie has is to NOT use Neo and co (well maybe Morpheus in a supporting role) and just tell it's own story inside that universe.

Aside from effects, the concept of The Matrix was fairly derivative. It was a hodgepodge of other popular concepts.

Judging from what I've seen on here and social media I have to wonder if this is a project that is already doomed to fail if it goes ahead. I'm seeing very little positive reaction to this. The bigger issue is it's a symptom of a very bad problem in this industry, the lack of willingness to develop and market new ideas. No-one wants to do the ground work and build anything up anymore.

I wouldn't mind a good reboot of the Matrix but I already know that isn't going to happen so I see no reason to care about this desperate cash grab of a franchise that fumbled its way through three movies and a decent animated side.

Someone suggested "make a story about Neo looking for the Next One!" I'm sure that's exactly the kind of crap that these suits are suggesting to each other when pitching this stuff to their overlords
