Sorta. I mean I agree Sith outdid both ATOC and TPM.

But in regards to X-Men, Spider-Man, Blade, Terminator, even throw in Godfather. And you have an original movie, an arguably superior sequel and a lackluster 3rd movie.

Matrix just goes from great to worst.

Pirates slumped majorly with the 2nd movie and I think the action of the 3rd made it at least better than the 2nd.

In regards to LOTR and Potter only succeeding because it's based on existing novels, how is it any different than a screenplay? Just because they are taken from a well done story doesn't necessarily give it an advantage.

Just because say a Matrix and Pirates are taken from original screenplays shouldn't excuse them from the same sort of standards.

How can it not give them an advantage? the stories already written for them, especially with potter and Lotr pretty much everything that happens is taken directly from the book

It's definitely a good comparison. Pirates' final chapter was just as pretentious and grim as Revolutions... and probably even more confusing and off-putting for it, given how jarring that was compared to the first film, where Matrix was always kinda that way.

If you have a great premise for a movie, wouldn't you try and create an outstanding story? I mean I'm not talking about King Lear here, but X-Men and Spider-Man 2nd movies were pretty much original tales using the existing characters.

I thought the fight between Smith and Neo at the end was well done. Because all I thought was.....Superman. The conclusion is the problem.

Of course we saw where that went. Anywho, Matrix's problems are they tried to be too smart and pretentious for the room. They should have stuck with the basics. Kinda like Pirates, instead of trying to be some sort of epic tale, they should have stuck with the fun, popcorn aspect of the first.

I think the flaw in the Pirates sequels is there is too much else going on, I read an interview with George Lucas about the Star Wars trilogy, and he said that the reason he thinks the prequels got more heat than the originals is cause the originals are very simple stories with 2-3 things going on per movie, where as there is so much history and detail to fill in with the prequels it may have overshadowed the plot....and i think that may have also been the problem with the pirates sequels....I think the Jones story would have made one great movie if they would have just done that and like one other thing, but I think the fact they wanted 9 main characters all realted to the central story got in the way, there where no Lando's Yoda's or Obi'Won's everyone was a Luke Leia or Solo

I have not seen or read eragon but normally with hack jobs on literature they do the opposite of what Potter and LOTR do, and chose not use the books as an almost literal translation....I'm aware they cut alot out of the potter movies, but they don't add stuff that isn't in the books really (the dragon part in 4 is alittle more than the books say) or go off on their own deal with the movie instead of where the book goes

The plot of Spider-Man 2, on the other hand, is just flat-out moronic. Losing your powers because you just don't want them anymore? It's so stupid you'd think a 4-year-old came up with it. The movie gets raves for the performances, action and direction. The writing is ridiculous.

I actually enjoyed that aspect of S2-I would first point to your sig as my argument
But second I would say your miscalssifying it when you say"didnt want them" Thats not how it really was.When he fell becuasr he couldnt sling a web,that wasnt a choice

its funny how i think (while still being nothing special, or even all that good) X3 is not all that bad, in terms of what an xmen movie should have in it, it manages to accomplish what the other two seemed to over look....mutants, and their mutant powers

At least both Matrix sequels were written and re-written before filming began. On the other hand, when Dead Man's Chest came out, there was no finished script for AWE (although they did have an outline), and as we all know, X3 was partly - and infamously - written DURING filming.

A cluster**** of thousands of people flying around using Neo's superpowers against hundreds of superpowerful programs?

Honestly, it sounds boring to me. The Matrix needs to have a "normal" world around it for the amazing things done by the heroes to have any kind of weight.

while this maybe I would still say the Pirates sequels tower over the matrix sequels

I think both Reloaded and DMC are close in their goodness at a dissapointing low 8 for both, but I would say for all AWE's problems it still has a solid majority of good in it like the whole part of Singapore, Barbossa, Davy Jones, and the Final Battle where as (imo) Revolutions has very few of anything good

I look at it a little differently

9-10: great
6-8: passable to good
4-5: below average
0-3: crap

but I mean 8.5 and what not exist to in my ranking system so idk where those stand

The Matrix was classic

The Matrix Reloaded was even better. A 10/10 movie.

The Matrix Revolutions was pretty boring. This means something coming from a guy who sat throught the LOTR films back to back and enjoyed them.
