The Naked Fun in The Superhero Cinematic Civil War Thread - Part 61

I just realized I have to watch the Browns vs Steelers next Thursday, so I cannot see Wicked on Thursday. But the wife gave me permission to go see both it and Gladiator II on that following Saturday

So I guess I am doing the Glicked thing

Would never had guessed that you like musicals.

Enjoy and go Glaked! *That sounded inappropriate but you catch my drift*.

No.

Had decent production values and I LOVED how they handled Brainiac, but the main characters were dull as dishwater and the writing was, well, Goyer quality. Brainiac was the one bright spot. Zod was ok.

Oh wow so there's another live action Brainiac besides Spike from Buffy. Interesting.

This maybe would have been feasible at the height of Jokermania in 2019. Now? Good luck with that, Todd.

I'll admit the set looks nice but McFarlane trotting that out after Joker 2 bombed is literally this:

Best Superman screen media of all-time for my money:

1.) Superman & Lois / My Adventures with Superman TIE (MAWS was in the lead until this season of S&L)
2.) Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
3.) Superman: The Animated Series
4.) Max Fleischer's Superman
5.) Adventures of Superman (1952)
6.) Superman '78
7.) Superman II
8.) The Death of Superman
9.) Superman vs. The Elite
10.) Superboy (1988)

Disclaimer: I've never seen the Ruby Spears Superman cartoon or more than clips of the Super Friends cartoon, but I've seen pretty much everything else the character has starred in.

I love musicals! When they're well done. It's a hard genre to master, but I love musicals in general

Man those Max Fleischer Superman shorts are STILL beautiful to look at. And just plain fun.

Those were probably my real first foray into Supes because I remember watching them random hours of the night back when Cartoon Network would play them.

Same! Back when we lived on the East Coast, my mom and I did annual trips to NYC to see a couple Broadway shows. I miss it so much. Movie adaptations of those musicals always make me nervous because they so rarely hit the mark. But Wicked is really...up there for me, like it might be The One I care most about...so I'm trying not to be too judgy about its adaptation, because so far people seem to think it's one of the better stage-to-screen adaptations. But it's hard. :funny:

I've seen one or two. They were on a VHS before a movie we had. I can't remember the movie, though.

It's honestly amazing how much better that 80+ year old animation still looks than 80% of animation today.

Gotham just never found its rhythm for my money. I love crazy stupid stuff. Do you know how giddy I was when Riverdale gave them all super powers to fight an interdimensional Confederate wizard? Great television. Gotham always felt like it was trying to be taken too seriously in what I watched of it. I never felt like it was really aware of itself.
Gotham thought it was high art and thus could not embrace it's madness in a fun, creative way. Instead it did it the fake, "look, I'm crazy" way that defined their "Joker".

I firmly believe that Riverdale is one of the best TV shows of the last decade, and it's not because they set out to make good, prestigious television. It's because midway through s2 they realized that teen angst ridden TV was kind of boring, and they wanted to make a 50s comic book come to life. Which is why in one season Archie could start in a jail where he's having prize fights, for the pleasure of the warden, escapes, on the run from the town capo who is his girlfriend's father leading to him fighting a bear, befriend a man named Baby Teeth, and start a community center for children that doubles as a boxing gym.

I sadly never got to see Wicked on stage. I am familiar with the show, though. So far the trailers and the good buzz have me pretty excited for it. I am honestly more excited for Wicked than I am Gladiator II. Gladiator II I think looks pretty good, but Gladiator is one of my favorite movies, and it's fighting the fact that I don't see this as at all necessary cause Gladiator is perfectly self contained. But I at least like the set pieces they're showcasing. But yeah, I am walking in much more interested in Wicked

Musicals are for me, one of the best showcases of the craft because so much goes into making a good musical. It's the easiest of all genres to screw up cause so much of it is timing and precision and extreme attention to detail.

I keep trying to tell people, if you're fortunate enough to go, make a way to see The Lion King on Broadway. I say it's the best adaptation of that story, hands down.

But I digress.

I still kick myself for not getting tickets for the Spider-Man musical a few years ago.

Yeah I adore Gladiator but I never needed a 2nd one in my life, and the buzz for this one seems to be more tepid than Wicked's, like it pretty much seems to be "it's good, but not as good as the first one." Which is fine, kinda what I expected from Ridley at this point in his career. I'm sure it'll be entertaining and I look forward to watching it, but I'm not finding myself particularly hyped.

I love a good movie musical for the exact same reasons I love a good action movie - because I love watching talented people pull off things I could never do lol. That's part of the magic of Hollywood from the get-go to me - seeing people like Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Gene Kelly, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, etc. do those things they did so well.

The Lion King is indeed magnificent, I've seen it on stage twice.

Where’s Smallville?!

Where’s Smallville?!
Nowhere near the top 10. Probably somewhere between the other Reeve films and the Snyderverse movies. Tom Welling was the worst Clark Kent of all-time until Henry showed up imo. But I still watched all 10 seasons like a masochist! Thank god for Erica Durance, is all I'll say.

I love Smallville. It's also straight up trash outside of three aspects, one of which you cannot talk about because of the real life implications. But Clark sucked, Lex sucked, and the Kents sucked.

When it comes to Supes adaptations, it's MAWS and S&L,

Though I have an eternal soft spot for Superman II. Zod is my boy and Clark's battle with the trio is my favorite on screen Superman fight. I also really dig Superman vs. the Elite. I've been disenchanted with the 90s DC animated series for a while now, though I do think JLU is peak.

The thing about Smallvile, is I could forgive it having The Worst Clark (up to that point) if it only had the BEST....anything else:

I didn't like Rosenbaum's monotonous deliveries, but Lex wasn't bad, he just wasn't The Best (John Shea was a better live-action portrayal of post-Crisis Lex, and Superboy's 2nd Lex, Sherman Howard, was always more menacing, and STAS's Lex was basically The Perfect One).

Erica was totally great but wasn't The Best Lois (Bitsie and Teri both gave Lois more depth, and MAWS Lois has the most personality).

Martha Kent was fine (Lois & Clark's was far and away The Best).

Jonathan Kent on that show was closed-minded, judgmental trash (once again, Lois & Clark had the best Jonathan).

Perry White was fine in his brief appearances 'til he hooked up with Martha (Best: Lois & Clark again by a country mile).

Kara was...not good. (Best: MAWS...until Milly, at least!)

Their version of the rest of the Daily Planet staff was awful (Best Jimmy: MAWS, Best Cat Grant: Lois & Clark).

And their Jor-El was actually the worst portrayal of Jor-El imaginable OMG.

I guess the only aspect of Supes lore you could say Smallville did do the best was Lionel Luthor? But considering it's the only Superman property to bother with Lionel Luthor even being a character in the first place, that doesn't win it much points in my book. But John Glover was awesome regardless.

Both of us failing to mention Lana says so much. :funny:

What I liked the about the show was Chloe, Lois, and Lionel. But I also had a ridiculous crush on Chloe, so I'm sure that clouds my judgement. But even then, she's basically his Jimmy there and she's not the best Jimmy around.

I think Smallville's biggest sin is that it doesn't feel like it would result in a Superman I would like. At least the first 6ish seasons. By the time it's just him and Lois, I could see her influence maybe bringing out a Clark I could root for. And even while I think Clark is inherently good, he still needs that seasoning of is family. And I don't know where he'd get it on that show.

LMAO. For the record,

Best Lana: Superboy.

Sorry again, Smallville. :hehe:

1. My Adventures With Superman
2. Harley Quinn
3. Batman: Caped Crusader
4. Green Lantern: The Animated Series
5. Superman: The Animated Series
Green Lantern and Brave and the Bold were the ones that just miss the cut for me. GL is so underrated. You know how fun you have to be for me to look past that damn animation? :o

Caped Crusader, I need a bit more. Though that back half of season one really was some properly good stuff.
