I'm very excited about BoB/Hellboy. I loved the BoB mini. Avengers #6 maybe my last issue with Rulk joining the team next month. I hate dropping a book in the middle of a storyline, because I think the Rulk thing is stretching into the Kang thing. SA better be an improvement over the last arc or I'll.....I'll.....who am I kidding. I'll never drop this book no matter how bad it is.....:csad:

It is interesting in that 1981 anime clip you showed, the only two Western style outfits for that heroine were inspired by Superman...and Wonder Woman. The same Wonder Woman WB insists cannot carry a movie. Even the Japanese are aware of her. Sigh.

Moving on...

DYNAMO 5: SINS OF THE FATHER #5
CAPTAIN AMERICA #611
FANTASTIC FOUR #584
SECRET AVENGERS #6
SHADOWLAND: MOON KNIGHT #3

This is a "sign of the times" week. Five comics, 80% of them from Marvel and all of them $3.99. That means five comics will cost me $20, the same price that, even two years ago, I could get 6-7 comics for about that much. And the comic book industry seriously wonders why customers leave, and NEVER return. 2011 can't come soon enough.

I know D5 is an Image title. But that has some caveats. It sells at the bottom of the Top 300, i.e. very poorly - so poorly I imagine Jay Faerber WISHES it sold as well as canceled Marvel titles like ATLAS or YOUNG ALLIES (around the 14-12k level, or where INVINCIBLE sometimes sells). And Image didn't even start selling comics over $3.50 until Marvel did, and then DC followed suit. That's what price wars do, raise prices across the line. After all, Image is like 3-4% of the industry; why should THEY be the last suckers? Or Dark Horse? And on it goes.

It looks like an okay week. DYNAMO 5's mini reaches a conclusion before an X-Mas special one shot, and it should be good. CAPTAIN AMERICA starts the "Cap on Trial" arc with Barnes having to legally answer for his Winter Solider era, which will likely be more "comics where people talk", but at least a legal drama justifies that. And that's what people read superhero comic books for, legal drama. The rest, though, could be hit-or-miss. Brubaker may really have this next arc to convince me to continue on SECRET AVENGERS, and if issue six is horrid, that could actually get me to drop it; STEVE ROGERS TWO-IN-ONE is not the same as a proper team title. The "THREE" arc of FANTASTIC FOUR is supposed to be drastically urgent, but I still don't feel it yet (and the "COUNTDOWN TO CASUALTY" counter on the cover is laughable). Which leaves SHADOWLAND: MOON KNIGHT #3, which is basically VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT #13 and the last issue of any Moon Knight material before Bendis & Maleev relaunch it. It'll be Gregg Hurwitz's last issue as writer and it could either be awesome, or underwhelm. So it is possible it could be a great week for me, or a week with one or two notables and a lot of "meh". Least it isn't a wallet buster.

I may pick up Thunderbolts to at least finish out the arc but we'll see. I highly doubt I'll get Incogneto as I never finished the first mini but I did enjoy the first issue of it so I may consider this one. I wasn't planning on getting either Road Homes but since there's some connecting plot between them all and I picked up two of them I might continue... but I doubt it.

As for the rest they're pretty much most of my middle tier titles. Decent reads that could easily be good or bad. Not a great week but not bad either.

Which leaves SHADOWLAND: MOON KNIGHT #3, which is basically VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT #13 and the last issue of any Moon Knight material before Bendis & Maleev relaunch it.

When was this announced?! I've been curious about Moon Knight for a while now (and bought the last issue of the ongoing not knowing it was the end to give it a shot). Moon Knight is more on par with Bendis's better stuff and he and Maleev make a decent team. I might give this a shot. When's it due to start?

It doesn't have a solid date, just sometime in 2011:

ON "MOON KNIGHT": Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev have been working together for years, with their most popular book probably being a long run on "Daredevil." Their current creator-owned series, "Scarlet," is doing very well, but they're going to jump back into the Marvel Universe with a relaunch of "Moon Knight" in 2011. They have been working on "Moon Knight" while "Scarlet" has been coming out, so the two series will run alongside each other. Marvel says the pair of creators will redefine Moon Knight they did Daredevil several years ago.

Thanks Tron! I have noticed my comic shop didn't even bother ordering any of the DC Presents $7.99 comics. I wonder if most comic shops are skipping that new idea from DC.

Anyway, looks like a pretty expensive week for me. Uggg.

I'm totally into that idea. Bendis and Maleev's run on Daredevil was fantastic. I'd love to see them take on a street level dark hero again.

In theory, it ought to play to their strengths. However, there are caveats. It's been a long time since that run on DD ended, and virtually everything else Bendis has written since has been mediocre or rubbish. I don't call him "Bendis The Horrendous" for nothing. And one throwaway line mentioned as that Joe Quesada "challenged" Bendis & Maleev to come up with "a new angle" to Moon Knight, which they are obliging. This means retcons and dismissals of years worth of continuity to do whatever Bendis wants.

Usually when someone "wants to do something new" with Moon Knight, they tend to make him crazier. Quite a few writers, including Dan Slott, don't like the era of Khonshu being said to actually exist, because they'd rather have that "is the god real or is Marc just nuts" angle play out for about as long as Peter Parker's bachelorhood. A better angle to take would be to keep Khonshu there and play up the pulp hero roots, but if you want Marc to have some shaky sanity, well, it's with actually knowing his god is real.

The run by Gregg Hurwitz hasn't been bad, it just hasn't garnered attention or been a defining one on the franchise. Bendis could sneeze on a page and sell it for $3.99 these days. The namepower alone will cause the book to likely debut within the Top 45 (and that is being modest), which would be the best selling MK book in years. I just am wary about the run, as I am of the writer. I really can't stand Bendis anymore, and I really can't blame anyone but myself every time I read something of his and it turns out to suck. I read over 100 issues of USM, over 40 of NEW AVENGERS, as well as all of his event mini's. He isn't getting better. If I don't like him now, I never will. :p

Well, I guess in Bendis' defense, the two issues of Scarlet he's done have been pretty good, and it's that whole 'street level grittiness' I would expect they'd bring to Moon Knight. That's not much of a defense, but maybe it counts for...something.

Bendis definately has his faults but I'm more tolerable toward him than you are. And while I've always been interested in Moon Knight I've not really read much of his so if there's retcons I wouldn't really know or care as much. I'm a perfect reader to enjoy it but I understand why it could turn off other fans.

And good news... it'll sell for $2.99 because it's a new title starting after this year :)

True, and his problems have always been the team settings. His better issues of New Avengers have always been the solo stories, specifically his street level focused ones. I think the best issue of New Avengers was his Luke Cage centric Civil War tie-in. His Spider-Woman one wasn't so bad either.

And though technically a team, the Nick Fury Secret Invasion issue and the follow up that put the Secret Warriors together was great. So chances are his street level is still good.

I've read reviews of SCARLET on "The Buy Pile" on CBR that said the exact opposite. It's been one of those divisive sort of comics, I think; some find it brilliant, others are confused or find it pretentious. I wasn't interested.

In his defense, SIEGE wasn't as bad as SECRET INVASION or HOUSE OF M. It was aided by being shorter, I think. I mean SIEGE was no masterpiece and it was full of plot holes, shoddy writing and some "WTF" moments, but by and large no one was majorly out of character, and it had a lot of action.

It may be possible that Bendis realizes he has been in a rut; he's also doing a kiddie comic. :p

Regardless of my Bendis bias, it is Moon Knight and I do like the character. The problem is, well...I haven't missed Bendis books at all. I can't have any delusions that if he starts out terrible or middling, he will get any better on it; he won't. And I can't blame anyone but myself if I feel cheated by his dialogue, or if it is too dark, or so on.

Technically, while Marvel said they wouldn't LAUNCH any new ongoing titles at $3.99; they said nothing about not raising the price to $3.99 for no good reason AFTER it launches. Find it unlikely? They did that with THOR. And a slew of other titles. NEW AVENGERS upped the price just 'cuz.

Bendis writes Moon Knight in ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, and that depiction was a complete lunatic (so much so that one of his personalities was a small girl). That's fine for that, but handing him the keys to any franchise is pretty much like smashing it with a baseball bat and seeing what chunks still work after.

Khonshu has been involved so often in Marc Specter's life, or Jake Lockley now, that it would be silly to simply deny he exists all this time. That's a Darkhawk style retcon that not even Abnett & Lanning were able to completely pull off. Khonshu has resurrected Marc twice, at least. He used to boost his strength. And he even possessed Marc on occasion. Simply denying all that and saying Marc is some freaky mutant would just be lazy writing. And if you think that's impossible, that's what Bendis & Brian Reed did with the Beyonder in THE ILLUMINATI (make him a mutant Inhuman, basically). I can't see any "new angle" to Moon Knight that doesn't include denying the Egyptian god existed to make him nuttier. That is what EVERYONE does with him. Bendis hasn't had a new idea since 2002. I don't expect to see him come up with one now.

One supposes if he just told Moon Knight stories and didn't try to reinvent the wheel, it would be fine because his namepower would boost sales and would ultimately make it "important". But that's too simple. Bendis will be unable to resist the urge to put his mark on it, like a spoiled brat who plunges a hand into someone else's birthday cake at a party that isn't for them.

I never cared for the Secret Warriors.

I do agree that street level heroes are his strength. The problem is I already fear I know what to expect, and I don't want to see it. I expect:

- Bendis to mangle the character with retcons that only make sense to him and limit anyone else's use of the character.
- Handing him a character with multiple personalities gives him even MORE incentive to write 19 pages of the most pointless monologue blather known to man, and the only include 2-3 pages of any story relevance. That is how he has stretched stories and led to the destruction of comic book writing via decompression for a decade. He has no reason to stop.
- Issues in which, when inner monologue is insufficient to waste pages, 18 pages an issue will be spent having discussions with Marlene or Frenchie told in that classic Copy & Paste style.

Copy?
Yes.
Paste?
Yes.
Classic style?
No.
No?
No.
Oh.
Yes.

(See, anyone can do it. Just not anyone is paid over $100 a page for it.) It produces dialogue so painful to read that I hear the Bush Administration applied it to inmates at Guantanamo once water-boarding was no longer an option. The Supreme Court still has to rule on whether it was cruel and unusual torment.

In fact the only positive angle to Bendis' run is that he either would amp up one of Moon Knight's few villains in a manner that, because it is Bendis, the rest of the line would swallow and run with (much like with Purple Man and the Hood), or create his own decent villains, which is something Moon Knight needs desperately. Or he could just have him fight Daredevil villains. Whatever.
