Sony is in no position to not to at least attempt to recoup the costs.

I dunno, they might be better off pulling the plug on this one.

We're a month or so away from the release date, doing that at this point would be the most costly option. If this was an independent film, shelving it would be the less costly option - but a big blockbuster like this, it'd do a lot of harm. The best they can hope for is at least recouping something from fans of the involved actors and actresses and those interested in giving it a shot despite poor reviews. Despite not seeing it in theaters now, unless those reviews/reactions change - fans of the cast would most likely check it out regardless (Hemsworth, McCarthy, and Wigg have followings - not huge ones, but ones enough to at least bring in some money).

The Boss just did a $23 mil opening weekend despite horrid reviews. I think it will be okay, if not a major smash.

This just seems like an exercise in futility at this point. It's got nothing but negativity attached to it. I get trying to recoup costs but at this point I can't see how they can't be realistic about it's prospects.

It is an exercise in futility, execs are most likely looking at it being a disappointment. But, as said - this isn't an independent film that can just be shelved and lose less money that way. The budget has already been spent, so something is better than nothing with a movie like this. Saving face doesn't really enter the picture when a film has a budget this high (not saying it has a huge budget, just blockbuster budget which is too big a budget to be shelved). I would say to stay away from spending extra to put it in any IMAX theaters though. Unsure how 3D works, I know F4 was going to have it then reversed those plans very late in the game - so I'm unsure if those conversion expenses and money back is only worth it when you know you will probably make a certain amount, so they might go back on 3D like F4 did.

Feig would rather the thing bomb than pull it. That whole campaign of his would be for naught.

I kinda feel sorry for all involved with this project. It just seemed doomed to fail from the beginning.

Better to lose $100 mil than $150 mil.

What really bothers me if Feig's position from the start that it wasn't going to suck, that it was all prejudice, blah blah blah. If it is indeed a bad film, I bet he is going to me dismissive about it, and say that people just didn't "get" it.

Still waiting for a good reason that this HAD to be based to Ghostbusters and absolutely could not be done any other way.

"At one point Leslie Jones’ character who no kidding shouts every single line in the movie"

God I hate her and her whole shtick/humor.

Will not be seeing this movie. ever since it was green lit, I wanted to just pretend it wasn't happening but it is! :( Whats next?

The trailers just make the movie seem very slapstick and that's not what Ghostbusters is.

If this sucks at least there is Legendary Pictures gritty supernatural Ghostbusters meets James Cameron’s Aliens movie Spectral coming out this summer as well.

Is that this summer?

Originally scheduled for August, but it doesn't have a trailer out - sensing most likely getting delayed to October (Halloween) if not next year.

Its release date is still said to be August 12, 2016 but there isn't a trailer yet.

Halloween would be a good time to release the movie

Yeah, they already got paid, they don't care. Unless they had like a horse in the race.

Pull the plug on what? They've already filmed the movie, I presume. They've already screened it to people. What is there to scrap, exactly? Its too late now.

Yeah no matter how bad this is there is no reason to scrap it when nearly all of the money has been spent already.
